The school year began. As president of the recycling club,Scott was thinking about new activities to
encourage other students to become more enthusiastic()about recycling. His club had helped to
recycle a lot of waste for the past five years and he hoped that this year they would do even better.
Scott went home one day and looked online, hoping to find ideas for events the club could organize
at school.During his research,he learned that the amount (of electronic waste,or e-waste,is
increasing rapidly.Scott was upset with himself for not noticing this problem sooner. At that moment,he
began to develop a plan.
“There is a special project I want us to work on this term,”Scott announced(宣布)at the recycling
club meeting the next day."We have all heard about e-waste,but recently I learned about the bad effects
it's having on our environment."He went on to tell the club members that he wanted them to organize
an e-waste drive-a day when students and their families could drop off unwanted electronics to be
recycled.“Now let's get to work!”

People used to see lots of plastics on the sea surface. Now in a study, researchers have found that
the microplastic pollution in deep water is much more serious than that on the sea surface."What we've
known about microplastic has been from the sea surface,"says Kyle Van Houtan,"but this study suggests
there's a larger amount that's unnoticed."
Microplastics are small pieces that break from plastic bottles or bags as they change to simpler
chemical forms in the environment. They have different sizes and can be found anywhere, including in the
oceans, lakes, soil and even blowing in the air.
To study microplastic pollution in deep sea,Houtan's team collected samples()in the sea by
using a ROV(遥控潜水器).As the ROV went down from5tol,000 metres below the sea surface,a
specially-designed machine filtered (the sample water and kept the small particles ()Back in
the lab,the team used a special machine to find out the types of plastic present
Although the researchers found microplastic was everywhere, the amount of the particles was not
evenly spread in the water. The midwater,180 to 460 metres below the surface, held the highest amount

of microplastic pollution, about four times as much as on the surface.Van Houtan thinks this may be
蝴
because when plastic breaks down into ever-smaller pieces, they are covered with biological material,

which causes them to go down into the deep-sea area.

Their findings are based only on a certain area, and if the results hold for the wider ocean
environment, the amount of plastic in the midwater would be worrying, because this is key living
environment for most sea animals. These particles, which have harmful chemicals, can go into the food
webs at both the ocean's surface and seafloor, and can influence reproduction of sea animals. The final
effect remains unknown,but what is for certain,Houtan says,is that"this is a serious problem,and it
shows humans can change natural systems".
Yet in other ways,"the results are encouraging,he says.Since most of the microplastic waste
comes from single-use plastic, this means we could reduce microplastic pollution by cutting down on the
型
production and use of the unnecessary plastic products.
(
)27.Houtan's team used ROV to
A.filter the sample water
B.collect samples in the sea
C.examine the chemicals
D.record the depth of water
)28.How does the writer develop Paragraph 3?
A.By listing the number of the findings.

B.By describing the course of the study.
C.By drawing the conclusion of the study
D.By explaining the cause of the pollution.
)29.What can we learn from the study mentioned in the passage?
A.The sea surface is the most seriously polluted.
B.Deep-sea animals will die out in the near future.
C.The midwater holds the most microplastic particles.
D.Biological material destroys the food webs in deep sea.

Have you ever looked out of the window of a passenger plane from 30,000 feet
题)
and wondered how people can have any major effect on the Earth?I have. But it is now
国
becoming pretty clear that we are causing a great deal of damage()to the natural
global
environment. And the planes that rush us in comfort to destinations(around the
warming
globe lead to one of the biggest environmental problems that we face today-global warming
For those of us lucky enough to have money and time to spend, there are a huge number of attractive
places to explore. The cost of air transport has decreased()rapidly over the years, and for many
people, especially in rich countries,it is now possible to fly around the world for less money.
Unfortunately, planes produce far more carbon dioxide(CO,)than any other form of public
transport, and CO,is now known to be a greenhouse gas causing the temperature of the Earth to rise.
Scientists predict that in the near future the climate in Britain will follow that of the Mediterranean(
)a popular destination for British holidaymakers flying off to enjoy the sun.If global warming
continues,we may also find that many tourist destinations such as the Maldives(马尔代夫)have
disappeared under water because of rising sea levels.
So what can be done to solve the problem?Well, although engineers are making more efficient
engines and researching other fuels()such as hydrogen,it will be a long time before air travel is not
damaging to the environment.Governments don't seem to be taking the problem seriously,so it is up to
travelers to do what they can to help.
The most obvious way of dealing with the problem is to not travel by plane at all.Environmental
groups such as Friends of the Earth encourage people to travel by train and plan holidays nearer home.
However, with prices of flights at an all-time low,and exotic destinations more popular than ever,it is
hard to ask British tourists to choose London instead of Beijing or Tokyo.
However, there is a way of offsetting (the carbon dioxide we produce when we travel by
plane.A company called Future Forests offers a service that can reduce CO,.The Future Forest website
finds the amount of CO,you are responsible for producing on your flight. Then you will pay a small fee(
to the company. And it can help you plant the number of trees that will absorb this CO2.
Yesterday I returned to Japan from England, and was happy to pay Future Forests 25 to plant the
three trees which balance my share of the CO,produced by my return flight. Now the only thing making
me lose sleep is jet lag(时差反应).
()30.What is the third paragraph mainly about?
A.The damage caused by public transport.
B.The possible effects of planes on global warming.
C.The main reasons for rising the global temperature.
D.The predictions of some disappearing tourist destinations.
(
)3l.The word“exotic”in Paragraph5 is closest in meaning to“
A.interesting
B.foreign
C.similar
D.beautiful
(
)32.From the passage,we know
A.passengers can pay extra fees to offset the CO,produced by their flights
B.the climate in Britain is similar to that of the Mediterranean now
C.environmental groups encourage people to plant more trees
D.it's getting more and more expensive to travel by plane
()33.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To discuss the bad effects of CO,
B.To compare different reasons for global warming.
C.To introduce the famous tourist destinations in the world.
D.To call attention to the environmental damage caused by taking planes.
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。根据题目要求,完成相应任务。
四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
(期中·北京一零一中学改编)Shoes get worn out. They get wet and dirty.
laces They get scratched ()Holes form in the bottom of a shoe, and laces break.
soles sneakers
You may think all you can do with grubby sneakers is to throw them out.
According to the US Department of the Interior,Americans throw away at least 300 million pairs of shoes
each year. These shoes end up in landfills, where they can take 30 to 40 years to decompose ()
"These are things that could have a second life,"says Karen Pearson, who is the chair of the
Sustainability Council(可持续性委员会)in New York.
An increasing number of companies have Take-Back programs that allow customers to bring back
old shoes instead of throwing them out.Shoes returned to these companies will be donated or recycled.
Customers could even get a discount if they buy new ones.Keep in mind that certain programs might be
brand-specific,meaning a company will take back only its own products.A sneaker brand, for instance,
has a program that accepts "gently (worn athletic footwear".Other programs say they will take
many different brands of shoes. These programs then turn the old sneakers into a variety of new products
beyond shoes, including fitness gear(键身装备)and materials used for tracks and sports field.
However, recycling old footwear still has some challenges. For one,it can be difficult to take old
shoes apart and process them.Shoes often contain a mix of materials, such as fabric, rubber and leather,
that are glued and stitched (together.Besides, shoes collected for recycling don't always end up
being recycled. Many were exported to some developing countries instead.
"One thing you can do is to take better care of your shoes,Pearson suggests.Still there are many
people who want to keep their old sneakers and are unwilling to part with them."They carry memories
of marathons,or we keep them simply because they have been with us through so much, points out
Madelyn Morgan, who works for the city.By repairing soles or replacing laces, old shoes can still serve
their purpose for a while longer. Some cities offer classes that teach people to repair shoes themselves, and
some shoe brands also offer repair services.Holding onto old shoes can reduce waste, which is beneficial
to the environment.
34.How many pairs of shoes end up in landfills every year in the United States according to the US
Department of the Interior?
35.What will the companies do to the old shoes in Take-Back programs?
36.Why is it difficult to take old shoes apart and process them?
37.What would you like to do with your gently worn shoes? Why?(Please give two reasons.
