Being confident isn’t just about what you know or think; confidence comes from how you feel in your body too.
If your shoulders are hunched (驼背的) and your head’s down, you feel differently to the way you feel when you’re sitting or standing straight with your head up and your shoulders back. Try it for yourself. How do you feel now?
Research has found that when you’re hunched with your arms and legs crossed and looking down, your body releases (释放) chemicals that can make you feel more stressed or worried. Young people’s coach Maria Evans says your body and brain are connected. “When you stand with your back tall, legs apart (分开) and hands on hips, your body sends the message to your mind that you feel confident and strong.”
Your body language doesn’t just affect how you feel. It tells other people how nervous or brave you feel too. Think about someone you see as confident. How do they carry themselves? Bring to mind a movie or TV character you admire for being brave or strong and picture how he sits, stands or walks. See if you can do the same.
If you’re feeling nervous, perhaps before you sit a test or do something new, you can feel more confident by taking a power posture (姿势). Sit or stand up straight with both feet planted on the ground. Stretch (伸展) your arms out above your head. Keep your shoulders down and your head up to help you keep the confident feeling. Evans suggests doing a power posture for a few minutes before school. Notice how it makes you feel and how your mood has changed.
4. What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. Sitting straight is good
B. Postures may influence feelings
C. Keeping shoulders down is bad
5. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. TV characters. B. Nervous feelings. C. Someone confident.
6. Which of the following pictures shows a power posture?
A. B. C.
7. What can we know from the passage?
A. Confidence comes from stress and worries.
B. Confidence only comes from your knowledge.
C. Confidence can also come from the body language.
【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. C

Have you ever been hungry and tired and wished you could solve both problems at once? If you were a reindeer (驯鹿), it would be easy. According to a new study, these talented deer can have a sleep while they chew (咀嚼) their food.
Reindeer live in the Arctic and other northern places where the winters are very dark and cold. Food can be scarce in winter. So during the warmer months the deer must eat as much as they possibly can.
Like cows, reindeer use a process called rumination (反刍) to break down the food they eat. This process includes passing the food back and forth between their mouth and their stomach, chewing it repeatedly. In summer, all that chewing seems to leave very little time for sleep.
To find out their secrets to getting enough rest, scientists looked at the brain waves (脑电波) of four reindeer. While they were ruminating, their brain waves were similar to those shown during light sleep. The animals sat or stood quietly with their eyes closed; they didn’t move much even when the reindeer nearby made some noise. “They were in a very relaxed state,” researcher Melanie Furrer said.
If reindeer are kept awake for too long, they need “recovery (恢复) sleep” to catch up. After ruminating, however, the deer do not need much recovery sleep. Researcher Gabriela Wagner said that ruminating serves two different purposes at the same time. “Not only does it help them to get the most energy out of the food they have,” she said, “but it also makes sure that their brains get enough rest and they get the sleep they need.”
8. What’s the purpose of Paragraph 1?
A. To express an opinion. B. To give an example. C. To introduce the topic.
9. What does the underlined word “scarce” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Not clean. B. Hard to get. C. Wet enough
10. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. Why reindeer need recovery sleep.
B. How reindeer feel when ruminating.
C. What reindeer can get from ruminating.
11. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Reindeer can eat while they sleep
B. Animals in northern places are special
C. Reindeer use a special way to keep fit
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】本文介绍了驯鹿一种独特的生存技能——在反刍的同时进行睡眠。文章讲述了驯鹿的生活环境、反刍的过程、科学家通过脑电波研究发现的证据。
【8题详解】
根据第一段以问句“Have you ever been hungry and tired and wished you could solve both problems at once?”开头,接着引出“If you were a reindeer, it would be easy.”,从而引出全文主题——驯鹿能在咀嚼食物的同时睡觉。因此,第一段的作用是引出话题。
【9题详解】
根据第二段“Food can be scarce in winter.”,其中“scarce”一词用来描述冬季食物的状况。结合上文“winters are very dark and cold”以及下文“the deer must eat as much as they possibly can”,可知冬季食物稀少、难以获得。选项B“Hard to get”最符合词义。
A“Reindeer can eat while they sleep”准确概括了全文主旨。选项B范围过大,选项C中的“keep fit”与文章重点不完全匹配。
