How does it feel when you solve a problem by yourself? Things may not always go according to plan, but being resourceful (随机应变的) can help you stay calm (镇静的) and deal with tricky situations.
Being resourceful means finding smart and creative ways to solve a problem, using whatever resources(资源) you have at the time. These may be practical things like pens and paper, or anything else that’s useful, such as information or your own experience.
A resourceful person is not the one getting upset or angry when something goes wrong. Resourceful people are thinking about how to solve their problems.
Resourcefulness is a skill that’s good for you in lots of ways. Dr. Cyra Neave is a psychologist (someone who studies how we think and feel) at a children’s organization. She says, “When we learn to solve a problem by ourselves rather than quickly going to others for help, it can help to build our confidence (信心), help us feel more independent, and feel better about making decisions.”
When you’re facing a challenge, Neave suggests trying to pay attention to the actual problem rather than how you feel about it. Think about where and when it happened and what caused it. ▲ Weigh up what’s good and bad about each solution (解决办法) and choose the best one. Finally, review what has and hasn’t worked, so you learn how to deal with a similar situation next time.
And remember, if you have a tricky problem that you’re unable to solve, then ask someone you trust for help. “No one is expected to solve all problems by themselves.” says Neave.

A. introduces something about creative thinking
B. explains how resourcefulness is good for people

Dear Dr. Know,
I’m a student in Guangming Middle School. I’m writing to ask for help because I’ve been feeling stressed and upset recently. The biggest problem is that I find it hard to communicate with my parents.
For example, they often criticize (批评) me when I stay up a bit late or use my phone for a while. I don’t think I spend too much time on it, but they still get angry easily. Besides, when they help me with my homework, they always say I don’t fully focus on my study.
But in fact, I work really hard at school. I always finish my homework on time and review my lessons carefully. As a result, my teachers often praise (表扬) me because I have made great progress in many subjects.
Although I try to stay calm when I communicate with them, sometimes I still lose control of my anger. I even shouted at them last week and I felt terrible afterwards. What’s worse, I don’t know how to relax myself or reduce my stress. Also, I have a terrible headache and can’t sleep well.
I really want to get along better with my parents. What should I do?
Yours sincerely,
Linda

Dear Dr. Know,
I’m a student in Guangming Middle School.
Yours sincerely,
Linda
