Do you know that we may not be able to see some beautiful places of interest around the world in the future? Let’s have a look at them before they disappear.
The Great Wall, China
The Great Wall has a history of thousands of years. But over half of it was lost and some are disappearing. There are many reasons such as the influence of wind and rain, but the main reason is human activities.
Venice, Italy
The city may not float (漂浮) for much longer because Venice will go underwater in 100 years. Since 1897, sea level in Venice has risen by 30cm because of climate change. Also, Venice faced serious flooding (水灾) in November 2019. Waters rose 1.87 metres above normal.
The Dead Sea
At 416 metres below sea level, the Dead Sea is much saltier than oceans. Everyone will be able to float, even though you can’t swim. But it has lost 1/3 of its surface area in the past 60 years because of the mineral (矿) pollution and farming.

A.It is 416 metres below sea level. B.It is much saltier than oceans.
C.It has lost 1/3 of its surface area. D.It is because of industry and farming.
12.According to the chart, which of the following reasons may make these places disappear in the future?

Want to sleep under the sea? Planet Ocean has plans for an exciting underwater hotel, and it hopes to build them over the world.
The sun will shine down and provide light, because the hotel won’t be very deep under the water. The hotel won’t be large, with only 12 guest rooms and a restaurant. As you might expect, Planet Ocean wants to encourage people to eat less fish, so guests won’t find any on the menu. What’s more surprising is that the environment will be very quiet, so guests will have to imagine the sound of the ocean around them. They will almost get the feeling that they are swimming in the ocean.
The hotel’s design (设计), with clear glass walls, means guests will be able to see the sea and all the sea animals that live around, above and below them in their rooms. So guests will get great close-up views of the fish and other sea animals.
The hotel won’t be cheap to build and it won’t be cheap to stay in. But the designers are especially satisfied with the fact that it will be environmentally friendly. It will use electricity (电), of course, but it will produce (产生) its own, and won’t hurt ocean life at all.
Planet Ocean’s future designs include a moving hotel. It perhaps sounds like this will work in the same way as a big ship, but this is not true. In fact, instead of moving between countries, it will stay inside the area of a single country’s waters.
14.What do we learn about the hotel?
A.Its light will shine into the sea so guests can see the fish.
B.It will be deep in the sea so guests can see sea animals.
C.It will only have a small number of rooms for the guests.
D.It will only serve guests who are quiet and friendly.
15.What might guests be surprised at when they are in the hotel?
A.Swimming from the hotel into the ocean. B.Having ocean life in their rooms.
C.Enjoying a big meal of fresh fish. D.Being unable to hear the ocean.
16.What is the best thing about the hotel according to the designers?
A.It won’t cost much to build. B.Sea animals won’t come close to it.
C.It won’t use any electricity. D.It won’t do harm to the ocean life.
17.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The moving hotel B.The ocean life C.The designer D.The environment
【答案】14.C 15.D 16.D 17.A

17.最后一段“It perhaps sounds like this will work in the same way as a big ship”中,“this”指代前文提到的“moving hotel”的工作方式,即移动酒店本身。

Picking mushrooms is becoming more and more popular. Last summer, many visitors came every day to pick wild mushrooms at Cangshan Mountain in Dali. This damaged (破坏) the beautiful forests and the local environment.
Reporters find that many forest areas now show clear signs of damage from all the people walking through them. Some guides who lead mushroom tours don’t actually have proper training. They sometimes can’t give right information about which mushrooms are safe to pick. Many visitors simply dig up mushrooms, take pictures with them, and then throw them away.
On one day, more than 500 people come into the mountain through just one entrance. There are many paths (小路) where people search for mushrooms across the whole mountain. This searching and digging is harmful to the natural home where mushrooms grow.

About 30 per cent is groundwater, which is important for human 45 (develop) and daily life. It hides under mountains, plains and even deserts, and is called aquifers (含水层).
Groundwater is 46 important part of earth’s water cycle. Some groundwater naturally rises and 47 (pour) out onto earth’s surface through springs (泉). In fact, we use 200 times more groundwater than oil.
As human-caused climate change dries out parts of the planet, the need for groundwater will rise, 48 the same time, climate change may make storms much 49 (strong). Heavier rains are more likely to rush 50 (direct) into lakes and rivers than flow into soil. So there may be less groundwater.
Meanwhile, human activities have 51 (pollute) groundwater in many places. Chemicals from farming or mining (采矿) flow into these aquifers.
What can be 52 (do)? Reduce pollution and find ways to purify (净化) groundwater. 53 we act now, we will hardly get clean water in the future.

Her small apartment is full of items redesigned from her collection, including tables, chairs and clothing. “Some say stooping means collecting rubbish,” Chen said. “But for me, it is about making the best use of things.” She sometimes puts stickers on idle items and posts pictures online for others to find.
With a hobby of keeping things since childhood, Huang Xiaohe from Xishan High School in Kunming also loves stooping. Though she has few chances to go stooping in her city, Huang often looks for idle items around school. Then, she cleans and redesigns them, turning them into fun things at home. The cotton from an old toy bear dresses a cloud lamp, bottles become decorations (装饰) and old facial masks (面膜) are used to make clothes for her Barbie dolls.
“I believe that any waste can be turned into treasures,” said Huang. She also added that stooping is an action to fight over-buying.
54.What does stooping mean for Chen?
55.How does Huang Xiaohe turn idle things into treasures?
56.Why do young Chinese do stooping?
【答案】54.It means making the best use of things. 55.She cleans and redesigns them, turning them into fun things at home. 56.To reuse idle things and fight over-buying.
【导语】本文主要讲述了中国年轻人中兴起的“拾荒”潮流,他们捡拾闲置物品并重新利用,赋予物品第二次生命,以此反对过度消费、践行环保理念。
54.第二段“But for me, it is about making the best use of things.”说明拾荒对陈意味着是充分利用物品,因此答案是原文直接信息。
55.第三段“Then, she cleans and redesigns them, turning them into fun things at home.”介绍了她是如何把闲置物品变成宝的,直接提取。
56.第一段“They pick up idle (闲置的) things and reuse them.”及最后一段“She also added that stooping is an action to fight over-buying.”提到了进行“拾荒”的原因,一是重复利用,二是反对过度消费,答案将其整合为“To reuse idle things and fight over-buying.”

17.What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
A.The moving hotel B.The ocean life C.The designer D.The environment

Another student, 19-year-old Lu Yunli, collects pretty packaging because she loves beautiful things. “Bringing a nice bag to class with my lunch makes me happy,” she said.
“These designs are getting more and more attractive.”

A.Most people like new things.
B.Buying old books can even connect readers.
C.I want to do the same thing in the future too.
D.The difference is that the books are much cheaper.

Environmental experts explain that mushrooms play an important role in nature. They help break down (分解) dead leaves and branches, which helps plants grow. Trends (潮流) come and go. Many things that people buy to follow the fashion end up in the rubbish bin. Now, young Chinese people are giving these things a second life. Nowadays, we can see many “stoopers” in big cities like Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. They pick up idle (闲置的) things and reuse them.
Chen Jiaorong is one of them. She started stooping in June 2022 when she found many people let go of things they had hardly ever used. Now, she often “hunts treasures” in her free time.
