Scientists have proved for the first time that bonobos (倭黑猩猩) enjoy pretend (假装的) play. Just like human children, these great bonobos can use make-believe situations to explore the world around them as they grow up.
Human children usually start playing with pretend objects between ages 2 and 3. Experts used to think that make-believe was an ability only found in humans, but bonobos have shown a similar kind of imagination. A bonobo named Panbanisha seemed to pretend to eat blueberries. Scientists began to think that bonobos enjoy imaginative play.
To test their ideas, two researchers turned to a remarkable bonobo named Kanzi. The great bonobo could understand thousands of English words, play video games, and use pictures to communicate.
The scientists wanted to know if Kanzi could have a pretend tea party. First, they taught Kanzi to choose a see-through (透明的) cup filled with juice, rather than an empty one. Then they set up a “tea party”. In front of Kanzi, a researcher pretended to fill two glasses with juice, then pretended to empty one of them back into the bottle. More than half of the time, Kanzi chose the “full” cup, even though there was nothing in it. This showed that he was playing the game and understood the idea of pretend juice. They used pretend grapes — and Kanzi still chose the imaginary grapes two thirds of the time.
Bonobos can clearly tell apart what’s real from what’s imaginary. “This really shows us that there’s much more richness to these animals’ minds than people have found,” a scientist said.
24. What can bonobos use make-believe situations to do?
A. Explore the world. B. Build a nice home. C. Keep away from danger.
25. What does the underlined word “remarkable” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Very common. B. Very special. C. Very dangerous.
26. Why did researchers use pretend grapes?
A. For a party. B. To fit Kanzi. C. To test Kanzi.
27. Where can we read this text most probably?
A. In a storybook. B. In a travel guide. C. In a science magazine.

Two new studies found that babies are born with amazing abilities.
In the first study, scientists in Ireland followed the brain activity of more than 100 babies. The babies lay on beds listening to soft songs as they were shown pictures of familiar things that fell into 12 different groups, including cats, dishes, trees, and food.
While the babies looked at the pictures, the team used a kind of scan called an fMRI (功能磁共振成像) to watch the blood flow in their brains. The babies had a different kind of brain activity for each of the 12 groups, meaning they were putting the pictures into groups as they looked at them.
The second study found that babies can predict simple musical rhythms (节奏) within 48 hours of being born. Scientists found out this by playing classical piano music to 49 sleeping babies and watching their brain activity.
When the experts changed the rhythm of the music, the babies were surprised, showing that they knew the music did not progress as expected. However, when scientists mixed up the melodies (旋律), the babies didn’t react. This means that the babies were more aware of the rhythm than the melodies.
Roberta Bianco, a scientist in Italy who led the study, said babies are used to hearing rhythmic sounds in the mother’s body, like their mother’s heartbeat or footsteps. “Rhythm may be part of our natural ability, while melody is something we grow into,” she said.
28. How does the writer start the topic?
A. By asking a question. B. By giving a finding. C. By giving an example.
29. What can we learn about the babies from paragraph 3?
A. They grouped the pictures.
B. They watched the blood flow.
C. They knew their mothers’ voices.
30. What changes can babies sense?
A. Melody changes. B. Rhythm changes. C. Classical music changes.
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Scientists and Music B. Babies and Music C. Babies’ Natural Abilities

Be open. Be open about new friendships. 34 It also does not help to compare your new classmates with your old friends. You have to be more open-minded, and welcome new people into your social circle.
Keep old friendships alive. 35 You can meet up or chat with them on the weekends. Therefore, you will be able to share your thoughts and feelings.
Keep the advice in mind the next time you experience change. Change does not always have to be uncomfortable. It can be welcoming too, if you change your way of thinking.
