Mason Martin had little interest in soup. He could take it or leave it. But his mother loved soup—she made at least two different kinds every day.
Besides soup, she also loved ducks very much. Their house was full of duck things. There were duck curtains on the windows, duck plates in the kitchen, duck pillows on the sofa, and duck spoons on the table.
When Mason was eight years old, his mum brought her two favorite things together. She opened a small restaurant called Soup and Quackers. When it was cold outside, Mason didn’t mind some chicken soup or tomato soup, even if his mother served it in a duck-shaped bowl. People came in from the cold streets, and hot soup warmed them. The restaurant became very popular.
But summer was different. When the weather grew hot, Mason refused the soup his mum offered. He always said, “No, thank you,” and pushed the bowl away politely. Customers felt the same. In the summer, only a few customers came in. Mrs Martin worried a lot. If business (生意) did not get better, she might have to close the restaurant.
One very hot day, Mason sat in the ice-cream shop with his friends Sam, Jake, and Leo. The boys wanted to get away from the heat outside. Mason slowly stirred his melting (正在融化的) orange ice cream and thought about his mum’s problem. Then, an idea suddenly hit him. “I’ve got it!” he shouted, jumping up from his chair. His friends laughed, but Mason ran out the door toward the restaurant.
He told his mother his plan: to serve ice - cream soups in summer. At first, she was not sure, but then she began to smile. The more she thought about it, the better it sounded. Soon, she decided to try it out.
The new menu was a success. People lined up for bowls of mint-chocolate dream, double berry, and other sweet flavors (味道). Even Mason’s friends came often.
That summer, Mason’s clever idea saved Soup and Quackers.
20. How does Mason feel about soup?
A. He dislikes it and never eats it.
B. He likes it only in hot weather.
C. He loves it as much as his mother does.
D. He does not like it much but sometimes eats it.
21. What was the restaurant’s main problem in summer?
A. Not many people came. B. The restaurant was too small.
C. It took too long to cook the soups. D. The soup recipes were limited.
22. What does Mason’s story mainly tell us?
A. Working hard may give some results. B. Being creative can help solve problems.
C. Listening to children’s ideas is important. D. Doing something is better than just talking.
C
In 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) set a big goal: by 2025 cut global physical inactivity by 10%. Now the time is up, but people are less active than before. In 2010, only a few people exercised enough. The situation for teenagers is even worse—81% of them do not get enough activity. We are not just failing to meet the goal; we are doing worse and worse.
Why did this happen? There are many reasons, such as health policies (政策) and city design. But some experts ask a basic question: have we always encouraged people to exercise in the wrong way? For many years, people are always told “exercise is medicine.” They say being active can stop diseases like heart problems. This idea is supported by strong science, so we think good health is the best reason to exercise.
But Benjamin Rigby, a health researcher from the UK, has a different idea. He says using exercise only to fight disease is too simple. People move for many happy reasons: to play, laugh, explore, dance and feel good about themselves. These fun and positive reasons are not included in health messages, so people do not care about them. Many studies agree with this idea. Researchers from the University of Edinburgh studied 123 reports and found that health is not the main reason people start to exercise.
Based on these new findings, the best messages to encourage people to exercise should focus on short-term joys: feeling good, cutting stress and having fun with friends, instead of the danger of getting sick many years later. So what might health messaging that focuses on the immediate benefits of physical activity look like? For example, some researchers suggest phrases “a little movement makes you feel happier” or “exercise helps you stay with friends.”
Strong evidence (证据) also shows people keep exercising when it is enjoyable. For example, the game Pokémon GO became hugely popular around the world. People loved it so much that they walked about 1,473 more steps each day just for fun. Nowadays, many people also enjoy cycling in parks on weekends; they ride not for health, but to enjoy fresh air, beautiful views and happy time with family. So why don’t public health messages use this happy idea?
23. According to the first three paragraphs, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Most people in 2010 got enough exercise.
B. Public health policies always tell people “exercise is medicine”.
C. 81% of adults don’t move enough according to the passage.
D. Experts believe health is the only real reason for exercise.
24. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Health is the most important reason for people to exercise.
B. People also exercise for fun, not just for health.
C. Exercise helps people fight disease in many ways.
D. Dancing and playing are good ways to exercise for young people.
25. What’s the writer’s main purpose of writing this passage?
A. To show happy reasons matter much in exercise.
B. To list proper ways to exercise.
C. To introduce harmful results of inactivity.
D. To explain the WHO’s exercise goal.
D
In today’s high-speed world, it’s easy to get caught up in the daily tasks and forget about those that bring us joy. As you create your goals for 2026, consider adding one to experience more flow (心流). Psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi has called flow “the secret to happiness”. Flow is a state of positive experience which is characterized by great joy that makes a life worth living. Each of us can bring it into our everyday lives.
When people feel flow, they are in a state of strong focus. Their thoughts center on an experience rather than on themselves. They lose a sense of time and feel as if their actions and awareness become one. Flow appears when both the task’s challenge and skill level are high. People will not feel flow when they are doing the dishes. Csikszentmihalyi’s research in the 1970s was aimed at people doing tasks they enjoyed. He studied swimmers, music composers, dancers, mountain climbers and other athletes. He found out that as long as the task’s challenge is high, and so are your skills, you should be able to achieve flow.
Flow is seen as “the secret to happiness”. For one thing, the experience can help people work towards their long-term goals. Research shows that taking a break to feel flow can improve one’s self-control, goal-achieving and well-being. A recent study also shows that flow could make people resilient in the face of difficulty. Part of this is because flow can help redirect thoughts away from something stressful to something enjoyable. In fact, studies have shown that experiencing flow can help guard against sadness and burnout.
What is going on in the brain during flow? Studies show that the experience is connected with increasing excitement in brain parts related to feeling satisfied. This may be one reason why flow feels so enjoyable and why people are so focused on tasks that make them feel flow. Research also shows that when people are in “flow”, there’s less activity in brain parts that deal with self-focus and negative thoughts. This may help explain why feeling flow can help distract (转移) people from worry. However, the above-mentioned studies were related, not causal (随意的). Further study of this connection is of great importance.
26. According to the passage, flow is most likely to appear when someone is ________.
A. attending a concert of his favorite singer B. playing chess against a strong competitor
C. doing daily chores for his family members D. sharing his traveling experience with friends
27. Flow is called “the secret to happiness” partly because it can help ________.
A. turn difficult tasks into easier ones B. draw people away from bad thoughts
C. remind people to take necessary breaks D. break long-term goals into shorter ones
28. What does the word “resilient” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean?
A. Easily influenced. B. Able to make great improvement.
C. Completely fail. D. Able to become strong again.
29. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. When does the state of “flow” appear?
B. What happens in our brain during “flow”?
C. Why does experiencing “flow” feel so good?
D. How can “flow” be achieved in everyday life?
六、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。(共8分,42题和43题每小题2分,44题4分)
ROOTS & SHOOTS
Most people suffer from what is called “Just-me-ism”. This is the idea that one person’s small wrong actions make no difference. You know wasting water, leaving lights on or littering is wrong, but you think: “I’m just me. What harm can it do?” If only a few people thought this way, it would be fine. But when millions of people do the same, it causes serious waste and harm to the world.
To encourage young people to take action for the environment, animals and their community, Roots & Shoots was started. This institute (协会) was set up in the early 1990s by Dr. Jane Goodall, a scientist who’s the world’s best-known expert on wild chimpanzees. In addition to her research, she tries her best to protect the environment. The whole purpose of Roots & Shoots is to educate young people, from preschoolers to university students, so they can help to build a future that is secure and live together in peace with nature.
The organization is called Roots & Shoots because roots move slowly under the ground to make a firm foundation (基础), and shoots seem small and weak, but they can break open brick walls to reach the light. The roots and shoots are you, your friends and young people all around the world. Hundreds and thousands of roots and shoots can solve the problems, change the world and make it a better place to live in.
Do you think you help to make the world a better place when you make a sad person smile, when you make a dog wag its tail, and when you water a thirsty plant? One cheered-up person, one happy dog, one flowering plant, and that’s what Roots & Shoots is all about: the value and importance of each individual (个人) — human, animal or plant. Dr. Jane Goodall believes that the most important thing is this: “Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference.” You get to choose: Do you want to use your life to make the world a better place for people, animals and the environment? Do you want to make Roots & Shoots rooted in everyone’s heart? Do you want to be a part of a community for a shared future? You cannot be absent.
It is by acting together, in this exciting way, that we can involve thousands — millions — of people, and this is what is going to change the world.

【答案】20. D 21. A 22. B

【答案】23. B 24. B 25. A

【25题详解】
全文围绕“运动的快乐理由”展开,第四段提出“the best messages to encourage people to exercise should focus on short-term joys”,结尾段以Pokémon GO、周末骑行为例说明愉悦感对坚持运动的重要性,作者写作目的是强调快乐理由在运动中的重要性
