In the past, traveling from Mombasa to Nairobi in Kenya (肯尼亚) was a “long nightmare”. People had to spend over 12 hours on rocky roads or take the old, slow trains built a century ago. But since 2017, the opening of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) has changed everything.
Alice, a 28-year-old Kenyan woman, is one of the first women drivers on this railway. “I still remember my first journey,” she said proudly. “The new train is much faster and more comfortable. Now, it only takes about five hours to travel between the two cities.”
The railway has brought great changes to Alice’s hometown. Before the SGR was built, it was difficult for farmers to send their vegetables and fruits to the capital. Much of the food went bad on the road. Now, fresh products can reach the market in just a few hours. “Because of the railway, my neighbors have started small businesses and their lives are getting better,” Alice added.
More importantly, the SGR is a symbol of friendship. It was built with help from China, and many young Kenyans like Alice have learned advanced technology from Chinese engineers.
Today, the railway is a “road of hope” that connects dreams and creates a brighter future for the local people. As Alice starts the engine every morning, she knows she is driving her country toward a better life.
1.How was the journey from Mombasa to Nairobi before the SGR was built?
A.Slow but relaxing. B.Fast but expensive.
C.Long and difficult. D.Short and comfortable.
2.What does Alice do?

(2026·浙江金华·一模)① Located in Africa, the Sahara Desert spreads across 30 per cent of the land. This huge desert, also known as “the Great Desert” in Arabic, is about 9 million square kilometers in size. It is also at least 4.6 million years old. This means that it is one of the oldest places in the world.
② All deserts are dry, and the Sahara is both dry and hot. It is the largest hot desert in the world. We may think that all deserts are hot, but in fact some deserts are very cold! Many scientists believe that Antarctica, for example, is a type of cold desert.
③ Most of the Sahara is rocky ground. But there are also places with grass, lakes, mountains, and even sand seas. A sand sea is just what it sounds like—it looks like a sea of sand! When the wind blows, the sand looks like waves.
④ Life in the Sahara is difficult. About two million people live in the Sahara. They usually move from place to place. There is water in a few parts of the Sahara, and some people live in these places all year round.
⑤ Not many animals can live in a place with such a dry and hot climate. They must get used to living in the desert. Camels, for example, go for a long time without drinking water. When they do find water, they can drink more than 100 liters (公升) of it in a very short time. Fennec foxes live in the desert too. They have large ears to help their bodies stay cool.
⑥ Today, the world’s largest hot desert is getting even bigger. It is now about 10 per cent larger than what it was about a century ago. But why is it growing? Some scientists believe that part of the reason is climate change. As temperatures rise, summers in Africa grow hotter and less rain falls. Water bodies get smaller and the ground gets drier and drier. If we do not take immediate action, the desert will keep growing!
1.What information does the writer introduce in Paragraph 1?
A.Life, location and size. B.History, climate and size. C.Size, climate and geography. D.Size, history and location.
2.What does “sand seas” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A.Seas with sand under the water. B.Large areas of sand that look like the sea.
C.Lakes and mountains in the desert. D.Rocky ground covered with seawater.
3.How do camels get used to living in the Sahara?
A.They have large ears to stay cool. B.They live in places with grass and lakes.
C.They can live without water for a long time. D.They drink more than 100 litres of water every day.
4.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Climate change is the only reason for the Sahara’s growth.
B.The Sahara Desert will stop growing if the temperature drops.
C.Human activities have no influence on the growth of the Sahara.
D.If we do nothing, the Sahara will become even larger in the future.
Since Apple dropped its iPhone 17 on Sept 9, 2025, the “Cosmic Orange” color for the Pro model has turned heads. It is a move away from more common colors, such as white and black.
Colors are more than just visual (视觉) effects. According to the American Marketing Association, bright colors can make a product seem better, even if the color doesn’t actually change how the product works. This happens because the richness or cleanness of a color might make people more confident in the product.
Why is this? According to an article from the University of Leeds, when light enters our eyes, special cells (细胞) at the back of our eyes react to different colors and send signals (信号) to the brain. Most signals go to the visual cortex (皮层), where we see pictures. But some are sent to another part of the brain called the hypothalamus (下丘脑). This part controls things in our body, such as temperature and feeling.
So, this means colors can change how our bodies feel. For example, blue light can make our blood flow and heartbeat slow down. It can also lower our blood pressure and help us relax, according to the University of Derby in the UK. Orange, on the other hand, wakes up our senses, making it great for catching attention.
However, no color has been shown to increase sales more than others, said researchers at the University of Southern California in the US. Still, successful brands often use colors to create their images (形象). For example, Coca-Cola uses red because it increases heart rate and improves appetite (食欲).
1.Which color makes products seem better, according to the passage?
A.Blue. B.White. C.Orange. D.Black.
2.How do some colors improve people’s feelings about products?
A.They react to special cells in our eyes. B.They excite more parts of the brain.
C.They make the brain produce more signals. D.They go directly to the brain’s visual cortex.
3.What effect does blue light have on people?
A.It helps them relax. B.It increases heart rate.
C.It wakes up their senses. D.It helps improve appetite.
4.Why does Coca-Cola use red as its brand color?
A.To show product quality. B.To build a brand image.
C.To make people feel thirsty. D.To control the whole market.
Am I Real or AI?
Imagine you are shown 10 photos of faces and told that half are real, and the other half are made by AI. Can you recognize (识别) the real ones just by looking?
You might think this is an easy task, but a new study shows it is far more challenging than we believe. Today’s AI-generated (生成) faces look surprisingly real, making it difficult for most people to tell the difference.
Researchers tested 125 people to see if they could discover which faces were AI-made. One-third of them were “super recognizers” — people who are especially skilled at remembering and recognizing faces in daily life. However, in this study, these experts got only 57% correct on average, while the other people got 51% correct, almost no different from blind guessing.
Early AI-generated faces often had clear mistakes and were easy to notice. As AI technology improves rapidly, it has learned from millions of real faces and become much smarter. Besides, there are better ways to make the pictures clear and beautiful. Now AI-generated faces look so perfect that people can hardly tell them from real ones. This has become a growing challenge in our world.
Telling real faces from AI ones is becoming harder every day. “For years, we believed photos showed real people and real situations,” said researcher James Dunn. But now when we look at pictures online, we may no longer trust “ ▲ ”. We should be more careful with fake (假的) AI images on social media and other websites.
The team plans to study the top performers in the tests and find out the secrets behind their ability to identify AI-generated faces. In the future, they hope to create simple and useful tools to help people tell real faces from AI-generated ones more easily.
1.What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Sharing photos online. B.Looking at the photos.
C.Making AI-generated faces. D.Telling real faces from AI ones.
2.What can we learn about “super recognizers” from the passage?
A.They could perform perfectly in the test.
B.They got 51% correct on average in the test.
C.They like creating different kinds of AI faces.
D.They are especially good at recognizing faces.
3.Which of the following is mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.When the early AI-generated faces appeared.
B.Why today’s AI faces are hard to recognize.
C.Who will create a new tool for telling AI faces.
D.How many people can easily discover AI faces.
4.Which of the following can be put in “ ▲ ”?
A.Seeing is believing. B.No pains, no gains.
C.Practice makes perfect. D.Well begun is half done.

HOW TO PLAN A PARTY
The first question to ask is, “Why am I having a party?” (It’s someone’s birthday; it’s the end of term; your team won a big championship (冠军); just to have fun with friends.)
A really good party has a theme. Beach party? 1970s disco? Something else? Then you have to find somewhere to have your party. Wherever you decide to have it, it’s always a good idea to ask for a YES from your parents first.
Are you going to invite everyone you know, or just some of your friends? It’s important to think hard about how many people you can afford to invite. Once your list is ready, you can send out the invitations. Any sooner, and people might forget about it; any later, and some of the people on your list might already have other plans.
OK, so now you’ve got two weeks to get everything ready. Don’t worry—it’s plenty of time: just don’t leave everything until the last moment. If you want to hire a DJ, start looking now. Remember that they might ask you to pay first. Then you need to organise the food and decorate the room, although these things can be left until the day before.
Last but not least, keep cool, get some sleep, and in the afternoon, before the party, just check it’s all ready. Then have fun!
A.Have you got everything ready for the party?
B.So make sure you’ve got money for that.
C.Now, it’s time to draw up the guest list.
D.What’s going to be the theme for yours?
E.A good time is about two weeks before the party.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.Have you ever planned or taken part in a birthday party? What do you think of it?

One spring morning, Mrs. Jones was in her garden with her grandson. She said, “Mike, I am preparing to plant some vegetables here. Are you going to help me?”
“Sure, Grandma, but could you tell me why you want to plant vegetables?” said Mike.
Mrs. Jones replied, “We can eat them when they are fully grown. But it will take a few months.”
Mike had no experience of growing vegetables, so he asked in surprise, “A few months? Why don’t we just go to the store and buy some?”

【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 4.D

3.第五段“Camels, for example, go for a long time without drinking water.”
4.最后一段结尾“If we do not take immediate action, the desert will keep growing!”
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.A 4.B
1.根据第二段“According to the American Marketing Association, bright colors can make a product seem better, even if the color doesn’t actually change how the product works.”
2.根据第三段“when light enters our eyes, special cells at the back of our eyes react to different colors and send signals (信号) to the brain. Most signals go to the visual cortex, where we see pictures. But some are sent to another part of the brain called the hypothalamus. This part controls things in our body, such as temperature and mood.”
3.根据第四段“For example, blue light can make our blood flow and heartbeat slow down. It can also lower our blood pressure and help us relax”,说明蓝光能帮助人们放松。

【答案】1.D 2.D 3.B 4.A
1.对应第2段,文中提到“You might think this is an easy task, but a new study shows it is far more challenging than we believe.”,结合前文第一段的问题“Can you recognize the real ones just by looking?”,可知“it”指代的是区分真实人脸和AI生成人脸这件事。
2.对应第3段,文中提到“One-third of them were “super recognizers” — people who are especially skilled at remembering and recognizing faces in daily life.”,可知“super recognizers”是特别擅长识别人脸的人。
As AI technology improves rapidly, it has learned from millions of real faces and become much smarter... Now AI-generated faces look so perfect that people can hardly tell them from real ones.”,该段解释了如今AI人脸难以识别的原因。
4.对应第5段,文中提到“For years, we believed photos showed real people and real situations... But now when we look at pictures online, we may no longer trust '▲'”,结合语境可知,过去人们相信“眼见为实”,但AI图片的出现让我们无法再相信看到的就是真实的,因此填入“Seeing is believing(眼见为实)”最符合语境。

How to reach an agreement
(Li Hua and Wang Tao need to finish an English poster together. Now they are making plans.)
Li Hua: Hi! Wang Tao. I was hoping we could finish it this Thursday. What do you think?
Wang Tao: I’m a bit busy on that day.
Li Hua: Then when would it work for you?
Wang Tao: How about Friday morning?
Li Hua: That’s OK for me.
Wang Tao: Now let’s talk about the work.
Li Hua: I’m good at drawing, but I’m not good at writing.
Wang Tao: What if we divide the work? I can do the writing.
Li Hua: Great. I’ll draw the pictures, and you write the words.
Wang Tao: Perfect. That works for both of us.
Li Hua:
Wang Tao: I think so. But if I’m a little late, would you mind?
Li Hua: No problem. We can help each other out.
Wang Tao: Great! Let’s start tomorrow.
A.What are you good at?

C.I’m afraid it’s too difficult for me.
D.Can we finish the main part by Friday?
1.

4.Which of the following from the conversation uses the tip “Stepping back a little”?
A.Great! Let’s start tomorrow.
B.Then when would it work for you?
C.I was hoping we could finish it this Thursday.
D.What if we divide the work? I can do the writing.
5.Complete the conversation using the tip “Stepping back a little”?
A: Oh, no! I can’t finish the project today.
B:
A: Great! You’re so nice!
1.C 2.A 3.D 4.D 5.Possible versions:
I can do that if you can finish the main part today./How about doing it together after school?/What if we work together tonight?
1.上文李华提议这周四完成,王涛回答“I’m a bit busy on that day.”(我那天有点忙),C项“I’m afraid it’s too difficult for me.”(恐怕对我来说太难了。)
2.下文李华回答“I’m good at drawing, but I’m not good at writing.”(我擅长画画,但不擅长写作),说明王涛在询问各自擅长什么,A项“What are you good at?”(你擅长什么?)
3.下文王涛回答“I think so. But if I’m a little late, would you mind?”(我想是的。 与回答中的“I think so”对应。
4.根据图片中的提示,“Stepping back a little”是一种达成协议的沟通方式,常用句型包括“What if we...”。
选项D“What if we divide the work? I can do the writing.”使用了“What if we...”
(Stepping back a little)。 You’re so nice!”)。

Yes, I have. It was fun and brought us closer.(言之有理即可)
1.第二段开头明确指出“A really good party has a theme”,D项符合逻辑。
2.第三段空缺处后文写道“Are you going to invite everyone you know, or just some of your friends”,说明空缺处和邀请的人有关。故选C。
3.根据第三段“Any sooner, and people might forget about it; any later, and some of the people on your list might already have other plans”可知,空缺处意为筹办派对的时间。
4.由第四段“Remember that they might ask you to pay first”可知,空缺处意为付款给派对的DJ。
