August Lamm, a writer, artist and former art influencer, hasn’t owned a smartphone since 2022. Her journey to give up the smartphone began shortly after graduating from college, when she started posting pictures of her art online and got hundreds of thousands of followers. “Everything that I shared online — all these pictures and words about my love life, my vacations or my house — was feeding into my business, helping to generate sales,” Lamm said. Finally, she said, the pressure to keep that up became too much, and she reached a breaking point.
At first, Lamm tried to put her phone in a drawer and avoid using it for a whole day, which, she said, made life inconvenient for everyone around her. It took her about a year to quit her smartphone and fully devote herself to the dumbphone lifestyle, which offers only basic calling and texting.
Still, there are certain things that may feel impossible to deal with without smartphones, since they are more than just texting and surfing social media. In 2025, these smartphones function as virtual wallets, health trackers, identification tools, and even personal assistants. However, Lamm has found solutions to the challenges. “You work out these problems by asking,” Lamm said, “like asking the parking company if they can offer you an alternative when you can’t use parking meter (停车收费表), and a lot of the time they will.”
When it comes to her career, Lamm says she earns more money now than she ever did as an influencer online. That’s because now she only does the actual work, rather than spending hours and hours crafting posts. “When I stopped posting, I found out income sources that existed before social media: agencies, magazines, galleries, publishers,” she said. “If I hadn’t spent thousands of hours trying to build a huge following, I could have spent that time going to galleries, taking classes, meeting people, making connections, organizing events, taking part in exhibitions and otherwise making a name for myself in the real world. I could have improved more quickly if I had not placed online popularity above creative development.”
24.What made August Lamm decide to give up the smartphone?
A.Her addiction to the smartphone.
B.The stress from social networking.
C.Her pressure from the busy college life.
D.Her concern over the downsides of technology.
25.Why does the author mention the situations in 2025 in paragraph 3?
A.To explain why smartphones are developing very fast.
B.To advise people to depend less on modern technology.
C.To show the wide use of virtual wallets and health trackers.
D.To stress the important roles smartphones play in daily life.
26.How can we best describe August Lamm according to the text?
A.Confident and demanding.
B.Creative and ambitious.
C.Determined and adaptable.
D.Generous and efficient.
27.What message does August Lamm want to express in the last paragraph?
A.Social media do more harm than good.
B.Dumbphones are making a comeback.
C.Use smartphones only when necessary.
D.One can be less dependent on social media.
根据第一段最后两句““Everything that I shared online — all these pictures and words about my love life, my vacations or my house — was feeding into my business, helping to generate sales,” Lamm said. Finally, she said, the pressure to keep that up became too much, and she reached a breaking point. (拉姆说:“我在网上分享的所有东西——所有这些关于我的感情生活、假期或房子的照片和文字——都在为我的生意服务,帮助带来销售额。”她说,最后,维持下去的压力变得太大,她到了崩溃的边缘。)”可知,拉姆因社交媒体分享带来的持续压力,最终决定放弃智能手机。故选B项。
25.推理判断题。根据第三段前两句“Still, there are certain things that may feel impossible to deal with without smartphones, since they are more than just texting and surfing social media. In 2025, these smartphones function as virtual wallets, health trackers, identification tools, and even personal assistants. (尽管如此,有些事情如果没有智能手机可能会觉得无法处理,因为它们的功能远不止发短信和刷社交媒体。到2025年,这些智能手机充当着虚拟钱包、健康追踪器、身份证明工具,甚至是个人助理。)”可知,作者提及2025年智能手机的多种功能,是为了说明人们的日常生活与智能手机联系紧密。这也服务于后文凸显拉姆放弃智能手机的不易。故选D项。
26.推理判断题。根据第二段最后一句“It took her about a year to quit her smartphone and fully devote herself to the dumbphone lifestyle, which offers only basic calling and texting. (她花了大约一年时间来放弃智能手机,完全投入到只提供基本的通话和短信服务功能的非智能手机的生活方式中。)”和第三段第三句“However, Lamm has found solutions to the challenges. (不过,拉姆已经找到了应对这些挑战的办法。)”可知,拉姆花一年时间坚持放弃智能手机,且能解决无智能手机带来的难题,说明她有决心且适应能力强。故选C项。
27.推理判断题。根据最后一段第三至五句““When I stopped posting, I found out income sources that existed before social media: agencies, magazines, galleries, publishers,” she said.

Piles of pancakes, pyramids of cakes, endless rows of fruits. Breakfast buffets across the world promise abundance (充裕) — and often deliver oversupply, behind which lies a darker truth: food waste.
The UN’s Food Waste Index Report stresses that the latest data from 2022 shows 1.05 billion tonnes of food were wasted, with almost 28% coming from food service and that buffet breakfasts generated more than twice as much waste as plated breakfasts — around 300g compared to 130g for made-to-order meals.
“Wasted food means wasted resources, and once in landfill, it gives off greenhouse gases that harm the planet. Cutting food waste is a powerful way to make a difference — and breakfast is a smart place to start,” says Jocelyn Doyle, head of The Sustainable Restaurant Association.
According to Kelly Haws, an expert in consumer behavior, buffets often make people eat more due to the “variety effect” — more choice encourages greater consumption. “Self-service also leads to oversized servings,” she says, adding that the abundance of buffet-style breakfasts can lead consumers to “take more food, consume more food, and feel less guilty about wasting that food”. The desire to get one’s money’s worth from a fixed-price buffet adds to the urge to eat more than is needed.
Hotels across the world are adopting some measures to cut food waste in buffets, like downsizing cakes and using smaller plates. While many travelers are leaning towards more intentional, waste-conscious dining, hotels still face the complex task of meeting diverse guest expectations. Striking the right balance between sustainability and service is no small feat, says Jocelyn, especially at breakfast, where the variety guests expect often conflicts with efforts to minimize oversupply.
Ultimately, Jocelyn recommends that hotels consider removing the buffet altogether and promote their breakfast experience instead. “In addition to reducing waste, more hotels should redefine themselves around thoughtfulness and sustainability. A small, thoughtfully planned, cooked-to-order breakfast menu can provide a more restful experience for guests,” she says.
28.Why is the UN report cited?
A.To prove breakfast buffets cause great food waste.
B.To show people prefer buffets to plated breakfasts.
C.To emphasize that food service needs to be improved.
D.To demonstrate that food waste is a universal problem.
29.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.Reasons for overeating at buffets. B.Potential harms of buffets to climate.
C.Crucial factors in wasting behavior. D.Disadvantages of self-service breakfasts.
30.What do the underlined words “no small feat” mean in paragraph 5?
A.A brave attempt. B.A tough challenge.
C.An absolute necessity. D.An ongoing process.
31.What does Jocelyn probably advise hotels to do in the end?
A.Upgrade their breakfast menu regularly. B.Create a more enjoyable dining atmosphere.
C.Prioritize energy saving and sustainability. D.Replace buffets with made-to-order breakfasts.
【答案】28.A 29.A 30.B 31.D

故选A。
根据第四段“According to Kelly Haws, an expert in consumer behavior, buffets often make people eat more due to the “variety effect” — more choice encourages greater consumption. (消费者行为专家凯利·霍斯表示,由于“多样性效应”,自助餐通常会让人们吃得更多——更多的选择会促进更大的消费量)”以及后文内容可知,第四段主要分析了人们在自助餐暴饮暴食的原因。故选A。
根据第五段“Striking the right balance between sustainability and service is no small feat, says Jocelyn, especially at breakfast, where the variety guests expect often conflicts with efforts to minimize oversupply. (乔斯琳说,在可持续性和服务之间找到恰当的平衡是no small feat,尤其是在早餐方面,客人期望的多样性往往与尽量减少过度供应的努力相冲突)”可知,在可持续性和服务之间找到恰当的平衡并非易事,no small feat意思是“并非易事,是一项艰巨的挑战”。故选B。
31.细节理解题。根据第六段“Ultimately, Jocelyn recommends that hotels consider removing the buffet altogether and promote their breakfast experience instead. (最后,乔斯琳建议酒店考虑完全取消自助餐,转而推广他们的早餐体验)”以及“A small, thoughtfully planned, cooked-to-order breakfast menu can provide a more restful experience for guests (一份精心规划的小型定制早餐菜单可以为客人提供更舒心的体验)”可知,她建议酒店用定制早餐取代自助餐。故选D。
D
In North Carolina, where I live, different-sized cities and towns schedule monthly activities that are free to the public. I enjoy attending as my schedule permits.
This month, I journeyed about one hour east to attend one of these events. The featured event was a collection of portraits (肖像) painted by a local artist. The models in the portraits were homeless people. The artist provided brief descriptions of the personalities, backgrounds, or behaviors of the people as she experienced them while painting them. All of the art effortlessly focused attendees’ minds on the humanization of marginalized (边缘化) people who are often dehumanized.
I was able to feel the human spirit of the featured people. I could imagine them and think about their life experiences. These are what researchers have labeled to be kinds of important, effortless, and invaluable hard fascination experiences. Researchers might also describe my experience as requiring moderate to hard focus.
In comparison, researchers have defined soft fascination as also stemming from effortless attention — but it is not the all-consuming attention that overwhelms the mind’s capacity to process other unrelated thoughts. Researchers describe soft fascination as attention that is less demanding on our mental capacity. Therefore, during soft fascination, we can reflect on other unresolved thoughts while we are attracted by something in our immediate environment. Soft fascination allows our minds to rest. We experience a restoration from the hard fascination that frequently consumes us.
Soft fascination may be healthy for our minds by giving us a break from hectic hustle culture, stressors, and disconnection from nature, a site of possible multisensory soft fascination and health benefits. Researchers Basu, Duvall, and Kaplan also discovered that their study participants perceived nature-based activities as their preferred ways to experience soft fascination.
It’s important in today’s stressful, chaotic, 21st-century world that we learn to conserve mental capacity to support rest and restoration. This also means that we might consider making more time to incorporate experiences of soft fascination into our daily lives. We may also experience reduced activity in areas of the brain and increased control by the peripheral nervous system during mental rest and restoration.
32.Why does the author describe the exhibition visit?
A.To show local artistic techniques. B.To describe a typical weekend activity.
C.To present a psychological concept. D.To reflect on community engagement.
33.What can we know about soft fascination?
A.It consumes more mental effort.
B.It is less common than hard fascination.
C.It allows for irrelevant reflections.
D.It requires full attention to one object.
34.What is most likely to be recommended for experiencing soft fascination?
A.Walking alone in a quiet forest. B.Solving complex intellectual puzzles.
C.Attending debates on social issues. D.Engaging in intense physical exercise.
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.What we are habitually fascinated about. B.Why we should experience soft fascination.
C.How we distinguish different fascinations. D.Whether we genuinely experience fascination.
【答案】32.C 33.C 34.A 35.B
根据第二段“This month, I journeyed about one hour east to attend one of these events. (本月,我向东驱车约一小时去参加其中一场活动。活动的主角是一位当地画家创作的一组肖像画,画中的模特都是无家可归者。画家根据作画时的接触,为每幅画附上了简短的描述,介绍模特的个性、背景或行为方式。所有作品都自然而然地引导观众去关注那些常被非人化的边缘群体身上的人性光辉)”中作者对参观画展的描述和第三段中“I was able to feel the human spirit of the featured people. I could imagine them and think about their life experiences. These are what researchers have labeled to be kinds of important, effortless, and invaluable hard fascination experiences. (我能够感受到画中人物的人性精神。我可以想象他们的样子,思考他们的人生经历。这些正是研究者所称的重要、毫不费力且无比珍贵的“硬迷恋”体验)”可知,作者描述参观展览是为了引出“硬迷恋”这一心理学概念。故选C项。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中“Researchers describe soft fascination as attention that is less demanding on our mental capacity. Therefore, during soft fascination, we can reflect on other unresolved thoughts while we are attracted by something in our immediate environment. (研究者将软迷恋描述为对我们的心智容量要求较低的注意状态。因此,在软迷恋过程中,当我们被周围环境中的事物所吸引时,我们仍能反思其他未解的思绪)”可知,软迷恋允许我们在被吸引的同时进行其他无关的思考。故选C项。
34.推理判断题。根据第五段中“Researchers Basu, Duvall, and Kaplan also discovered that their study participants perceived nature-based activities as their preferred ways to experience soft fascination. (研究人员Basu、Duvall和Kaplan还发现,他们的研究参与者认为基于自然的活动是体验软迷恋的首选方式)”以及第六段中“This also means that we might consider making more time to incorporate experiences of soft fascination into our daily lives. We may also experience reduced activity in areas of the brain and increased control by the peripheral nervous system during mental rest and restoration. (这也意味着,我们或许可以考虑留出更多时间,将软迷恋的体验融入日常生活。在心理休息和恢复期间,我们大脑某些区域的活动可能会减少,而外周神经系统的控制力则会增强)”可推知,在安静的自然环境中独处最可能被推荐用于体验软迷恋。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第五段中“Soft fascination may be healthy for our minds by giving us a break from hectic hustle culture, stressors, and disconnection from nature, a site of possible multisensory soft fascination and health benefits. (软迷恋可能对我们的心理健康有益,因为它让我们从忙碌的奋斗文化、压力源以及与自然的脱节中得到休息——自然是可能产生多感官软迷恋和健康益处的地方)”以及第六段中“It’s important in today’s stressful, chaotic, 21st-century world that we learn to conserve mental capacity to support rest and restoration. This also means that we might consider making more time to incorporate experiences of soft fascination into our daily lives. (在当今充满压力和混乱的21世纪,学会保存心智能力以支持休息和恢复非常重要。这也意味着,我们或许可以考虑留出更多时间,将软迷恋的体验融入日常生活)”可知,本文主要论述了软迷恋对心理健康的益处以及为什么我们应该主动体验软迷恋。故B项“Why we should experience soft fascination. (为什么我们应该体验软迷恋)”能概括文章内容,最适合做文章标题。故选B项。
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
They say once you learn how to ride a bike, you never forget. Most of us learnt when we were kids, and many still put on our helmets, place our feet on the pedals, and shoot off for a ride around the streets. Nowadays, cycling has seen a boost in popularity. Then comes the question, what makes it so appealing to people to ride their bikes once again? 36
First, let’s look at the health benefits. Cycling can improve your cardiovascular (心血管的) health and burn extra body fat. Stronger leg muscles mean you can push down on the pedals with more power and turn them more quickly. 37 A long ride in the countryside could help you to clear your mind or destress.
38 By cycling, you save money on fuel or train fares. If you do drive into work, sometimes finding somewhere to park can be a nightmare, whereas finding somewhere to chain your bike up can be much simpler. Then, on the train, there are upsetting changes at stations and other commuters are always speaking loudly on their phones. 39 And if you’re worried about safety, there are marked cycle lanes in many major cities. Wearing high-visibility clothing, sometimes referred to as “hi-vis”, is another way to improve your safety when cycling on the roads.
Finally, cycling can also be good for the environment. It can help you to reduce your carbon footprint. Not releasing waste gas into the atmosphere is better for the planet and your own environment.
Believe it or not, more and more people want to cycle for their health, getting about town, their wallet, the environment, or a combination of all of them — 40 .
A.Cyclists face neither of these issues.
B.The popularity of cycling is on the rise.
C.And cycling nowadays is out of date.
D.Its charm lies in the following aspects.
E.Cycling can be a great way to commute or get about town.
F.And cycling’s benefits aren’t just physical, but mental as well.
G.More and more people are choosing electric bikes for their daily commute.

Modern Life in Cartoons
In the cartoon, a man is typing busily on the computer, waving to a woman beside him and saying, “Can’t talk now — I’m chatting.” It vividly shows a common social phenomenon: people are so absorbed in online chatting that they ignore face-to-face communication with those around them.
In my opinion, while online communication brings convenience, we shouldn’t let it replace real-life interactions. We should balance our time online and make more effort to talk with people around us, which helps build warmer relationships.

I never spoke in Mr. Thompson’s eighth-grade history class. Not a single word all year. My stutter (口吃) since childhood made public speaking my worst nightmare. I perfected the art of being unseen — sitting in the back, avoiding eyes, begging never to be called on. Most teachers, after a few failed attempts, gradually let me sit in the background. But Mr. Thompson was different. He would ask a question, his kind eyes looking around the room and stopping at my desk. The silence would continue until he gently moved on. I hated those stops. I thought they were filled with his pity, or worse, his impatience.
Our only communication was through writing. I handed in articles filled with thoughts I could never voice. He returned them with careful notes in green ink — not just corrections, but questions, encouragements and connections to ideas. In the margins (空白) of an essay, he once wrote: “True courage is not about being without fear, but speaking up even when your voice shakes. Your writing has a powerful voice, Alex”. I treasured those notes but refused the man. I believed he was showing the very thing I couldn’t do.
The final project was a 10-minute oral presentation My heart sank. I spent weeks in worry. The night before the due date, I found an envelope (信封) from Mr. Thompson in my backpack. Inside was not a note, but a single key and a small map of the school drawn on notepaper. An “X” marked the old, unused hall at the far end of the building. No words, just the quiet invitation of an “X”.
Holding the cool key, my confusion slowly turned into a flash of understanding. Could this be a way out? A secret escape from my public fear? My heart beat with a mix of fear and hope as I turned the key in the hall’s side door that evening after school.注意:
(1)词数应为150个左右;

One possible version:
Opening the door, I saw Mr. Thompson sitting in the front row, holding a small recorder. My face was burning with embarrassment. Had he tricked me? “Hello, Alex,” he said, his voice calm. “This room is the best in the school. I think if you’re going to find your voice, it should be in a place that makes it sound brave.” He pointed to the recorder. “No one else needs to hear this but you and me. And you only need to speak to yourself.” He then turned his back to the stage. “Pretend I’m not here. Just talk to the silence.”
The next day, I felt nervous before my classmates, but my hand found the key in my pocket. I closed my eyes for a second, imagining the empty hall and Mr. Thompson’s back. When I began to speak, my words tripped at first. Then I remembered the clear sound of my voice from the recorder. I took a deep breath. Words didn’t flow easily, but they did come. I spoke as I had practiced. When I finished, the students were quiet first, and then burst into applause. My eyes found Mr. Thompson’s. He gave me a meaningful nod. I knew at that very moment that I had overcome my fear with his help, for which I would always be thankful.
