When I was 10, I was caught in a lie. I stubbornly denied breaking a window in my neighbor’s barn, but my parents knew I had done it. In those days, a broken window was a big deal, and I was close to miserable.
Then Uncle Jim arrived. He never raised his voice or rushed. Riding beside him in his old green car, I kept glancing at him nervously. I could see a confused smile at the corner of his mouth. “Telling the truth is always easier,” he said out of the blue. He grinned at me. “So it’s perfect for a lazybones like you and me.” That was it — no lecturing, no scolding. My uncle began to hum (哼歌), and I was much relieved.
Not long after, I spotted a pair of brown leather gloves on the windowsill (窗台) in the post office. Old Mrs Jameson had come in wearing them and left barehanded. I tried them on. They were perfect. That night, my conscience troubled me. The truth is easier for a lazybones. The next day, I returned the gloves. A month later, Mrs Jameson sent me a new pair with a note of thanks. When Uncle Jim asked where I got them, I told him the story. “See?” he said, delighted.
Uncle Jim taught me far more than that. One August day, we were fishing in a small boat. I was a bit down at our slow pace. He said speed was fine if you wanted to go fast, but slowing down made any journey less of a blur. “It helps you focus,” he said. I thought of that decades later when he was dying, in his 82nd year. Was he spotting more details and getting a clearer view as he slowed and concentrated? Uncle Jim was an observer who touched those he loved by sharing what he saw. Some things I understood quickly, but others took decades to become clear.
Be honest, be brave, look around and slow down — the words were never spoken, but the message always got through.
4. How did Uncle Jim react to the author’s lie?
A. He paid little attention. B. He offered mild guidance.
C. He delivered a long lecture. D. He gave a severe punishment.
5. Why did Mrs Jameson send the author a new pair of gloves?
A. To express her concern. B. To show her generosity.
C. To test his conscience. D. To reward his honesty.
6. What does the underlined phrase “less of a blur” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Less tiring. B. Less risky.
C. More exciting. D. More vivid.
7. What is the main message conveyed in the passage?
A. Truth does not need to be spoken. B. The elder always give wise advice.
C. Honesty and patience matter in life. D. Mistakes are unavoidable for children.
B 5. D 6. D 7. C
根据第三段中的“That night, my conscience troubled me. The truth is easier for a lazybones. The next day, I returned the gloves. A month later, Mrs Jameson sent me a new pair with a note of thanks. (那天晚上,我的良心不安。真相对懒人来说更简单。第二天,我归还了手套。一个月后,詹姆森夫人送给我一副新手套,附带一张感谢信。)”可知,作者主动归还手套,詹姆森夫人送手套是为奖励他的诚实。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“He said speed was fine if you wanted to go fast, but slowing down made any journey less of a blur. “It helps you focus,” he said. (他说如果你想赶路,速度快没问题,但是放慢速度会让旅途less of a blur。“这有助于你集中注意力。”他说道。)”可知,放慢速度能够让人专注,看到更多细节,旅途的景象会更加清晰生动,因此less of a blur意为“更加生动清晰”。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“Be honest, be brave, look around and slow down — the words were never spoken, but the message always got through. (诚实、勇敢、环顾四周、放慢脚步——这些话从未直白说出,但其中的深意总能被领会。)”以及第四段中的“He said speed was fine if you wanted to go fast, but slowing down made any journey less of a blur. “It helps you focus,” he said .(他说如果你想赶路,速度快没问题,但是放慢速度会让旅途不再一片模糊。“这有助于你集中注意力。”他说道。)”可知,文章传递的主旨是生活中诚实和耐心十分重要。

The old English proverb “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink” has been used since the 16th century to describe the difficulty of getting someone to act in their own best interests. Now a new study suggests this proverb has been underestimating horses for centuries.
“Previous research suggested horses simply respond to stimuli (刺激物) in the moment and that they don’t proactively look ahead, think ahead and plan their actions,” said Louise Evans, the lead researcher from Nottingham Trent University that analyzed the animal’s responses to a reward-based game. However, the new study shows they do have an awareness of the consequences and outcomes of their actions.
The three-stage game involved 20 horses, who were initially rewarded with a treat merely for touching a piece of card with their noses. Then in the second stage, researchers started switching on a “stop light”. The horses were only given a snack if they touched the card while the stop light was off.
At first, they ignored the light and touched the card randomly, regardless of whether the light was on. But when, in the third stage, researchers introduced a penalty (处罚) for touching the card while the stop light was on — a 10-second timeout during which the horses could not play the game at all — the team found there was a sudden and highly significant reduction in errors. The horses started correctly touching the card only at the right time to get a treat.
Evans hopes the groundbreaking study will help to improve welfare for horses. “Generally, when we start to think animals may have better cognitive abilities than originally thought, their welfare will improve. We also show that, in training, you really don’t need to use anything too harsh to get really good performance out of horses.”
8. Why is an old proverb mentioned in paragraph 1?
A. To present a new understanding. B. To illustrate a common concept.
C. To compare two diverse perceptions. D. To explain an old phenomenon.
9. What mistake did horses make in the game?
A. They touched wrong cards. B. They turned off the stop light.
C. They ignored the light signal. D. They kept playing in the timeout.
10. What is the function of the timeout penalty in the game?
A. Raising horses’ interest in the game. B. Testing horses’ cognitive ability.
C. Stimulating horses’ quick response. D. Regulating horses’ living habit.
11. What can be inferred from Evan’s words?
A. Horses’ learning ability is limited. B. Horses perform well with rewards.
C. Horses deserve to be better trained. D. Horses’ training has been improved.
A 9. C 10. B 11. C
根据第一段“The old English proverb ‘you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink’ has been used since the 16th century to describe the difficulty of getting someone to act in their own best interests. Now a new study suggests this proverb has been underestimating horses for centuries. (古老的英语谚语“引马到水边,强按不喝水”自16世纪以来一直被用来描述让人按自身最大利益行事很难。现在一项新研究表明,这句谚语几个世纪以来一直低估了马。)”可知,作者提到这个谚语是为了引出新的理解。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“At first, they ignored the light and touched the card randomly, regardless of whether the light was on. (一开始,它们无视灯光,随意触碰卡片,不管灯是否亮起。)”可知,马匹在实验中忽视灯光信号,这是它们出现的失误。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“researchers introduced a penalty (处罚) for touching the card while the stop light was on — a 10-second timeout during which the horses could not play the game at all — the team found there was a sudden and highly significant reduction in errors (研究人员设置处罚:如果在停止灯亮起时触碰卡片,马匹将面临10秒暂停,完全无法继续游戏。研究团队发现马匹的错误率突然大幅下降)”可知,研究者加入超时惩罚后,马匹的错误率大幅下降,说明马能理解惩罚规则并调整自己的行为,研究者正是以此测试马匹的认知能力。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段Evans的话“Generally, when we start to think animals may have better cognitive abilities than originally thought, their welfare will improve. We also show that, in training, you really don’t need to use anything too harsh to get really good performance out of horses. (总体而言,当我们意识到动物可能具有比原先想象更好的认知能力时,它们的福利就会得到改善。我们还发现,在训练中,你真的不需要用太严厉的手段就能让马表现出色。)”可知,研究者认为马拥有超出以往认知的认知能力,训练不必采用粗暴方式,因此马匹值得用更好的方式进行训练。
D
People who live in warm cities often prefer to keep their windows open during the summer so that fresh air can come in. However, open windows also allow noise to enter the room, which can make it difficult to rest, study, or sleep. To deal with this everyday problem, researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have developed a device.
The research team, led by Bhan Lam, attached 24 small speakers to a window grille (铁栅栏) in an 8-by-3 arrangement. A sensor was placed outside the window to detect incoming sounds. After receiving the sound signal, the system made the speakers produce sound waves that could weaken part of the unwanted noise before it spread further into the room.
In indoor experiments, the team played recorded road, train, and aircraft noise from a loudspeaker placed 2 meters away from the window. In these controlled conditions, the system was able to reduce the noise level by up to 10 decibels (分贝) in some cases. This did not mean the noise disappeared completely, but it became clearly less noticeable. For people living near busy roads, even this level of reduction could make a room feel more comfortable.
The device worked best on low-frequency transport noise, especially in the 300 to 1,000 hertz range. These sounds included much of the background noise produced by cars, buses, and trains. Speech and other sharp sounds were more likely to slip through, with those sounds often carrying higher-frequency details that this design struggled to cancel. “This idea is similar to noise-cancelling headphones, which usually work best against steady background sounds such as the hum of an engine,” said Lam.
The speakers used in the experiments were quite small, so they could not handle very deep low-frequency noise well. Larger speakers might improve performance, but they could also block more sunlight and reduce the view from the window. In the future, the researchers hope to test the device in real homes and improve its design for everyday use.
12. What can the device be used to do?
A. Reduce noise through open windows. B. Prevent sounds from outside environments.
C. Test the function of indoor speakers. D. Monitor the situation of urban noise.
13. What aspect of the device is discussed in paragraph 2?
A. Its practical application. B. Its appearance design.
C. Its working principle. D. Its market value.
14. What is the shortcoming of the device?
A. It struggles to reduce transport noise. B. It fails to be applied in different scenes.
C. It has no equal to the effect of headphones. D. It is less effective in blocking speech sounds.
15. What can be inferred about the device from the last paragraph?
A. It works well in real life. B. It requires further improvement.
C. It needs to be made larger. D. It delivers satisfying performance.
A 13. C 14. D 15. B

I caught sight of myself in a cafe window the other day, bent over my phone, with my head down and shoulders tense near my ears. ____16____ And I began to wonder how good it could feel to shake it off.
Small, everyday habits can lead to bad posture (体态). Whether we are using our phones on the sofa or working at the kitchen table, we may bend over or sit in one place for too long without noticing it. But over time, little things can become habits. And those little habits? ____17____ Poor posture does more than cause muscle aches. It can also affect your breathing, mood, and energy levels. When we bend forward, our chest becomes less open, which limits oxygen intake and often leads to shallow breathing. ____18____
That is why good posture matters. It benefits us physically, mentally, and emotionally. It can help reduce pain, improve breathing, and enhance digestion, while also boosting energy levels and helping us sleep better. But there’s a gap between knowing posture is good and actually making it a habit. ____19____ Essentially, good posture means keeping your body in the right position whether you are standing, walking, or sitting. This means keeping your head, shoulders, and hips in line, relaxing your shoulders, engaging your core, and avoiding unnecessary tension.
____20____ Because little changes add up, experts recommend a few simple but effective ways to improve it. When sitting at your desk, keep your feet flat on the floor, support your lower back, and relax your shoulders. When using your phone, bring the screen up to eye level instead of bending your neck down.
A. So what does good posture actually look like?
B. Posture is a habit that affects almost everything you do.
C. Why do people usually need to maintain good posture?
D. It is often caused by the way we sit, stand, and use our phones.
E. Over time, this can make you feel tired, anxious or emotionally low.
F. That’s when I realized how easily bad posture slips into our daily life.
G. They can have a lasting impact on our bodies in ways we might not realize.
F 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. B

The Study Habit That Benefits Me Most
Some students believe talent decides everything, but my own experience tells a different story.
The habit that benefits me most is reviewing my notes before bedtime. Instead of rereading everything, I close my book and try to recall the main points. Whenever I get stuck, I mark the gap and check it the next morning. This habit has improved my memory and made me more confident in exams. It also saves me from last-minute panic. It has become part of my daily routine, and it costs me only ten minutes a day.
Talent may give us a head start, but a good habit keeps us moving. If you haven’t found yours yet, start with something small and stick to it.

Vast grasslands on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, known as the “roof of the world”, have long been home to the black-necked crane (鹤). Very fond of the graceful birds, Tibetan people have regarded them as the plateau’s messengers — soft-natured, strong enough to survive the plateau’s extremes and deeply tied to the balance of their land.
Drolma and Tashi were a couple who had tended yaks (牦牛) for decades in Lhunzhub, a county near the Yarlung Zangbo River. They often paused, watching the cranes flying or dancing. As loyal protectors of the plateau’s wildlife, they had long heard of TARWPA (Tibet Autonomous Region Wildlife Protection Association), but they never thought they would contact it one day.
One cool autumn morning, while rounding up yaks near a stream, Tashi suddenly froze. There, beneath the woods, lay a black-necked crane — its body muddled and left leg missing below the knee, likely from the attack of a predator like a fox. It let out a weak cry of pain. Tashi said, “We can’t leave it here.” Drolma bent down, gently wrapping the crane in her woolen scarf.
They carried it home. Drolma gently cleaned its body with care, removed blood from its left leg and dressed its wound carefully. Then they made it a soft bed near the stove and fed it with wheat. For three days, they took turns looking after it. Its bleeding wound began to heal, but anxiety still weighed heavily on the couple. The crane could neither walk nor fly.
However, a turning point came. On Saturday, their 15-year-old son Dawa returned home from boarding school. At the sight of the injured crane, his eyes widened with surprise. Drolma and Tashi told about the whole story. Dawa’s expression turned serious and then his eyes lit up with hope. “My teacher once talked about artificial legs for animals!” Dawa said cheerfully. “But it requires professional knowledge and skills from specialized institutions.”

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
“That sounds a good idea!” Drolma and Tashi responded. Dawa picked up the phone and successfully got in touch with TARWPA, explaining what had happened to the crane. The association was moved by their acts of kindness, promising to send staff workers to fetch the crane and have an artificial leg fitted onto it. The next day, their vehicle arrived. Drolma held the crane and put it into the vehicle gently. The crane, with its long neck stretched backwards, let out soft sad calls, as if unwilling to part with the family, who were tearfully waving goodbye.
A month later, a call of surprise came from TARWPA. It told the family that the crane had fully recovered and invited them to visit it. They could hardly believe their ears and headed for TARWPA without delay. The moment they came into sight, the crane, with its wings spreading, raced to greet them. It circled them joyfully. Drolma and Tashi stroked the crane’s feathers, delighted to see its well-fitted artificial leg. The heartwarming reunion scene was frozen in time, touching everyone present. Kindness and love bridge humans and wildlife, safeguarding this magical land.

C
