More than 25 years ago, Darrius was a college student. He had a problem. No one at school could braid (编辫子) his hair. There was no Internet to teach him in the 1990s, so he decided to learn how to do it himself. He practised it for months. After trying many times and making a lot of mistakes, he finally learned it well. Soon, other students came to ask him to do their hair.
Later, Darrius found a barber school nearby. There, he learned basic skills like cutting, coloring, and caring for hair. Darrius was famous for working with all kinds of hair. He said he did not learn this in school. Instead, he learned from real experiences. At that time, he opened his own busy salon (沙龙). He hoped when customers left, they would feel happy. “I am trying my best to make people feel good and confident.” Darrius said.
After running his own salon for years, Darrius started to be a hair designer for movies. This new role brought two special challenges. The characters in films could be from the past or the future. This needed great creativity. The other challenge was to make sure the character’s hair looked the same every time. He might work on the same hairstyle for almost six months.
Just like in college, Darrius rises to all kinds of challenges and deals with them calmly. Yet, one thing has never changed: his deep wish to help others feel satisfied.
19. Why did Darrius practise braiding for months?
A. To teach at a barber school later. B. To work on movies in the future.
C. To solve his own hair problem by himself. D. To help others feel good about themselves.
20. Which is the correct order of Darrius’s experiences?
①He opened his own salon. ②He studied at a barber school.
③He learned to braid his hair. ④He started creating movie hairstyles.
A. ③→①→②→④ B. ②→①→③→④
C. ②→③→①→④ D. ③→②→①→④
21. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Darrius wanted to make people feel good through his work.
B. Darrius met big challenges when designing movie hairstyles.
C. Darrius turned a personal hair problem into a successful career.
D. Darrius learned different hair skills and worked in different places.

What if failure is not the end, but a new beginning? In our lives, we cheer for winners and great achievements, but we seldom celebrate failure. Actually, such failure helps people grow and discover new things. This is the power of failure.
Failure helps us ask better questions. Nearly every great discovery starts with failure. For example, at first, Galileo failed to prove that the Earth moves around the Sun. But the failure did not stop him. It made him think carefully and ask better questions about space. He kept trying and finally succeeded. He changed the way people see the world. This is also true of another great scientist. In Einstein’s whole life, he kept trying to find the unified field theory (统一场论) but he failed many times. Yet each failure pushed him forward and he learned to think differently.
Failure can also build our creativity and courage. The most creative people are never afraid of failure. The Wright brothers’ gliders (滑翔机) crashed many times before they flew successfully. Each crash was not just a mistake. It was a lesson that sparked new ideas. They learned exactly what went wrong, gained the courage to step off the familiar path, and tried new designs until they finally succeeded.
Thomas A. Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” So don’t fear failure. Try bravely and learn from failure, because it is not the end of the road but a new start. As many great minds have shown us, every failure carries the seed of a future success.
22. How does the writer lead in the topic?
A. By showing a fact. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By sharing an experience.
23. What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A. Galileo never proved the Earth moves.
B. Failure drives great scientific discoveries.
C. Failure stops scientists from thinking differently.
D. Einstein succeeded in finding unified field theory.
24. What does the underlined word “sparked” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Shared. B. Hid. C. Created. D. Changed.
25. What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce the benefits of failure.
B. To show failure helps scientists make discoveries.
C. To encourage people to see failure as a new start.
D. To explain failure is necessary for people’s growth.

D. Darrius learned different hair skills and worked in different places.
C 20. D 21. C

B 23. B 24. C 25. C

第一段“What if failure is not the end, but a new beginning?”

born with a facial difference说明是因为looks“长相/外貌”,符合语境。
wave at“向……挥手”、look at“看”、nod at“向……
staring at him without looking up“盯着看却没有抬头”,without符合语境。
后文“always tries his best to be friendly”说明他never“从未”失去善良,符合语境。
teach us a lesson“给我们一个教训/道理”,lesson符合语境。

I had a disagreement with my parents about my after-school activities. I wanted to spend more time on my hobbies, but they thought I should focus all my time on schoolwork. We argued and I felt really upset. Instead of shouting back, I decided to communicate with them patiently. I told them my feelings and made a good plan to balance study and hobbies. Finally, they understood me and we reached an agreement.
From this experience, I learned that proper communication is the key to solving problems. We should understand each other and respect different opinions.
例文2
I had a disagreement with my parents about using my mobile phone. I wanted to chat with friends after school, but they thought it was a waste of time and bad for my study. We had a big fight. I calmed down first and then had a serious talk with them. I promised to use the phone only after finishing homework and limit the time. They finally agreed with me.
I learned that we should communicate with parents properly. Understanding each other can help us get on well with them.
