Most people know that pets can bring joy to our lives. But few realize that keeping a pet can also bring great health benefits. Scientists have found that pet owners are often healthier and happier than those without pets.
One way pets help is by reducing stress. When you play with a dog or cat, your body produces a chemical that makes you feel relaxed. This can lower your blood pressure and help reduce feelings of anxiety (焦虑).
Pets also encourage us to be more active. Dog owners, for example, need to take their pets for walks regularly. This means more exercise, which is good for heart and bone health. Studies show that pet owners take an average of 2,000 more steps a day than non-pet owners.
There are other benefits too. Children who grow up with pets are less likely to develop allergies (过敏) and asthma (哮喘). Pets can also speed up recovery (康复) from illness. Hospitals in some countries even allow small pets like rabbits to help patients feel better during treatment.
So, if you’re thinking about getting a pet, remember—it’s not just a friend, but also a health helper.

To celebrate the Year of the Horse in China, the Spring Festival Gala introduced its new mascots (吉祥物). Let’s welcome Qiqi, Jiji, Chichi, and Chengcheng! These four horses are cute and full of energy. Their designs mix ancient history with modern art. Let’s meet them one by one.
Qiqi’s design is based on the famous Bronze Colt-shaped Zun of Lord Li (蠡驹尊) from the Western Zhou Dynasty. It has a dark colour and wears a high hair bun. Qiqi looks calm, polite, and full of big dreams.
Jiji takes its design from the Han Dynasty. Its body looks like the famous Bronze Galloping Horse (铜奔马). Look at its wings! They spread wide for the horse to fly high. The design of the wings comes from an ancient bronze umbrella handle. How brave and confident Jiji looks!
Chichi shows the style of the Tang Dynasty. It is a Three-maned Horse. Its mane (鬃毛) is shaped into three bunches. This style was for the highest-ranking horses long ago. Chichi looks brave and strong.
Chengcheng is a Przewalski’s horse (普氏野马)—the only wild horse species alive today! China now has the world’s largest number of them. This is a great achievement in wildlife protection. Chengcheng looks strong and fit, showing the good relationship between humans and the earth.
These four horses bring joy and hope. They are ready to run into a happy New Year with you!

In the deep dark waters of the Arctic and North Atlantic, Greenland sharks, which can live for centuries, have been found to have a few tricks for long-term survival.
Recent studies suggest that some organs (器官) of Greenland sharks may not be easily harmed by aging, while others seem able to handle tissue damage (组织损伤) that builds up over time. The findings explain how these sharks live longer than any other vertebrate on Earth. Swiss biologist Lily Fogg says that the findings may one day help treat aging in human organs, calling it her “biggest dream goal”.
People used to believe that the sharks either had seriously damaged eyesight or were completely blind. However, Fogg and her team studied eye tissue from 10 Greenland sharks, some of which were as old as 150 years, and published their findings in Nature Communications. Surprisingly, the sharks had all the basic tools needed to see in the dim light of the deep sea. Also, their eye tissue did not show the usual wear and tear of aging. Fogg also explains that this may be because their eyes have more active DNA repair tools. These tools can repair damage that would otherwise lead to cell death and tissue breakdown.
However, the anti-aging (抗衰老) method in the eyes may not work in all organs of Greenland sharks. Italian researcher Cellerino examined the hearts of 6 Greenland sharks and found that they were full of hard scars formed with age. In humans, such scar tissue suggests heart disease, making the heart stiff (僵硬的) and less able to pump (泵送) blood. The sharks’ hearts also showed cell damage, yet Cellerino notes they still functioned — able to send blood despite damage that would fail other animals’ hearts. The reason is unclear, but sharks’ tissue may produce protective body chemicals to handle age-related heart damages.
Ecologist Catherine Macdonald isn’t surprised by these findings. She notes, “Any animal that lives such a long life must have the ability to repair and maintain itself.” Still, Macdonald doesn’t see direct applications for human health in the near future. And she stresses, “The new findings certainly do not mean people should rush to follow anti-aging trends using shark products.”
31.What is Fogg’s “biggest dream goal”?
A.To discover how Greenland sharks survive.
B.To find out why tissue damage builds up over time.
C.To study the ways Greenland sharks protect their eyes.
D.To use the findings to fight against aging of human organs.
32.What can we learn about Greenland sharks?
A.They are highly inactive in DNA repair.
B.They have poor eyesight or totally blind.
C.Their hearts still work even with damage.
D.Their eye tissue shows typical aging signs.
33.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Research findings on Greenland sharks’ secrets to long life.
B.Applications of shark research to treat aging human organs.
C.Biological advantages of Greenland sharks over other animals.
D.Scientific methods for DNA repair in Greenland sharks’ organs.

“Thank you for your email. I have left to run after my dream of knitting (钩编) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office...until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her tutor (助教), which has recently gone viral (走红) online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia.
The project began due to a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped greatly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also damaged their feathers, making it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for influenced penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process (过程) and stop them from eating the oil. The method has proven useful. In 2001, another oil spill happened near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved.
However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have raised concern that these sweaters may put more stress on the penguins’ bodies and it may be harmful to their health. In response, the foundation explained that the sweaters are only a short-term solution and will not be used once the penguins recover (康复).
To make sure the penguins are protected and wearing suitable clothes, the foundation has provided knitting instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.
34.How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A.By telling a joke. B.By describing an email.
C.By introducing a tutor. D.By using a famous saying.
35.Which of the blanks in the sentences below can the underlined “concern” in Paragraph 5 be put in?
A.They felt a sense of ________ after knowing the snacks and drinks were tested to be safe for kids.
B.The ________ of achieving her dream made all the hard work worth it and happiness filled her heart.
C.Villagers expressed ________ about the safety of local traffic and the terrible results it may cause.
D.The teacher has given the students ________ that the coming test will not be too difficult to pass.
36.Why was the project of knitting sweaters for penguins started?
A.To make penguins look cute.
B.To protect penguins from the cold.
C.To help penguins influenced by oil spills.
D.To raise understanding of climate change.
37.What does the Penguin Foundation say about the knitting project?
