Hello from different landscapes
I am a river. I have two faces. I give life: my water is fresh water, so everybody can drink it and use it for farming and washing. But I am also very powerful. When I flood, I sometimes destroy (破坏) homes and lives. Nothing can get in my way.
I am a desert. My body is mostly made of sand and I seldom see rain. I am very hot during the day and very cold at night. Nobody wants to live in such difficult conditions, but a few plants and animals can survive. How amazing!
I am the ocean. I am huge. I cover more than two-thirds of the earth’s surface, so people call the earth the “Blue Planet”. What a beautiful name! I am home to hundreds of thousands of living things.
I am a forest. I am full of trees, and I produce oxygen for humans and animals to breathe. I wear different colors in different seasons, usually green in summer and golden brown in autumn.
1.Why is the water from rivers so useful to people?
2.Why does the river say it has “two faces”?
3.What are the living conditions like in the desert?
4.Why do people call the earth the “Blue Planet”?
5.What colors do forests usually wear in summer and autumn?

If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands(岛). Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. It’s only good for keeping sheep. The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.
They’re not for everyone, however. Even in summer it is cool and windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are no forests, and there are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks(岩石)and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view(风景)looks like pictures of the moon.
But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the way to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean(海洋). The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. It is in the tiny flowers that grow on the hills. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and fall the hills are more purple. Often the air is soft and gray with clouds and rain.
On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed and Breakfast. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.
If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs(酒吧)or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing. There are also some tourist shops, but not many. They sell the usual tourist things. They also sell some beautiful clothes made of wool from the islands.
Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. Come to walk in the clean, cool air. Come for the quiet beauty and for the views.
6.Are there many people living on the Hebrides Islands?
7.How is the weather on the Hebrides Islands in summer?
8.Where can you see other islands and the open ocean?
9.What do the islanders like to chat about?
10.What attracts(吸引)you most on the Hebrides Islands? Why?

Deserts are dry and hot. It’s very difficult to live in deserts. But some plants and animals can still survive there.
Forests are home to many animals and plants. We should not cut down too many trees in the forests.

You are a nature lover? Then you must visit Zhangye Geopark (地质公园) in China! It’s recognized by UNESCO as one of the best geoparks in the world. Here, you can enjoy the beauty of the rainbow hills.
They are low hills that look like waves and have many different colours, just like a rainbow! There is little grass growing on the land. When you see the hills from above, it’s like you’re looking at rainbows painted on the ground.
You may wonder how these colourful hills came to be. Millions of years ago, this area was under a lake. Over time, rivers brought in sand and stones with different kinds of metal elements. These were left in layers on the bottom of the lake. Some layers were red, some yellow, and others turned purple or blue. Later, as the climate became colder and drier, the lake dried up. Then, something amazing happened!
The underground land began to rise up and push against each other. The layers of sandstone were lifted higher and higher. Through years of wind, sun, and rain, they formed the colourful hills we see today.
June to September is the most wonderful time to visit. The mornings and evenings are cooler than the hot days, giving you the perfect weather to enjoy the sunrises and sunsets. Sunshine after a summer rain will make the colours even brighter and more beautiful.
26.What can you enjoy in Zhangye Geopark?
27.What colours were the layers?
28.How did the layers form the colourful hills we see today?
29.When is the most wonderful time to visit the park?

With four stories forming four concentric (同心的) circles, the building has over 400 rooms. Sleeping in one room per night, you can stay here for over a year. Like a mushroom, the building is made of earth and it can hold 600 people.
The Chengqi Building, a tulou, was built in the Qing Dynasty in Yongding County, Longyan, Fujian Province. As the tallest and oldest round building in the province, the locals call it the “King of Tulous”. The building helped people keep out the enemies and people there used the farmland to grow rice and tea.

A Trip to Gansu
Did you ever dream of visiting a place with fantastic history and natural beauty? Gansu is the perfect choice! Last summer, I went on a trip there and visited wonderful places with my husband.
First, we explored the Mogao Grottoes. These ancient caves (洞穴) are full of beautiful paintings and sculptures (雕塑), telling stories of ancient culture. The Mogao Caves were inscribed (铭刻) on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1987.
Next, we headed to the Crescent Spring and the Mingsha Mountains. The lake looks like a crescent moon, sitting quietly among the golden sand hills. Although the area is very dry, the lake doesn’t dry up as one might expect. Climbing the Mingsha Mountains was exciting—the sand made a sound like singing when we walked on it!
On the last day we visited the Jiayuguan Pass. It is a famous and important part of the Great Wall in western China. It is also the only city to combine (连接) the Great Wall of China with Silk Road culture. Standing on its strong walls, we could see the wide lands far away and feel like we stepped back into ancient China.
Every place has its special food. Of course, Gansu also does. Lanzhou beef noodles must be the most famous local dish. People first made it in the Qing Dynasty (清朝) and it is now popular all over China. Niang pi zi cannot be missed among the local dishes too. This is a favourite dish among locals and many tourists. We tried both of them. I believe if you try them, you’ll never forget them.

22.Why is the lake called the Crescent Spring?
23.What exciting thing happened when the writer climbed the Mingsha Mountains?

Chogori (乔戈里峰) stands on the China-Pakistan border. Chogori is from the Tajik language, meaning “high, great and magnificent”. Internationally, it is better known as K2. Chogori is 8,611 metres high, making it the second highest mountain in the world.
And Chogori is not Qomolangma. On the one hand, Chogori is a steeper (更陡峭的) and more dangerous peak. In fact, it is the most difficult peak to reach in the world. The first two people to reach the top of Chogori Lino Lacedelli and Achille Compagnoni from Italy did it in 1954. In 1986, the first woman did it too.
Of all the over 8,000-metre-high peaks, it has the highest death rate.
On the other hand, this great peak is for professional climbers only. Here, no commercial (商业的) climbing organization will provide services, and even top-class climbers will choose their climbing partners with a particularly eagle (鹰) eye. The leader of a Japanese K2 team said when organizing his team in 1982, “We are professional climbers, and all know that if we run into trouble at a height of 8,000 metres on K2, it is impossible to get help. If you do not have the confidence and determination (决心) to face possible trouble, you should not go!”
This is Chogori! In the eyes of the top-class climbers, it is the most beautiful peak, and it is the danger that attracts them.

27.What’s the height of Chogori?
28.When did the first two people reach the top of Chogori?

I am the ocean. I am huge. I cover more than two-thirds of the earth’s surface, so people call the earth the “Blue Planet”. What a beautiful name! I am home to hundreds of thousands of living things.
