Chinese internet users on a social media platform called Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote abroad, have seen a lot of new foreign users all of a sudden. These new users say they came from TikTok (Douyin). They left because they were worried the US government might ban (禁止) TikTok within a week and jokingly called themselves “TikTok refugees”.
The US held a two-hour discussion on January 10 about the future of TikTok. TikTok users in the US said that they moved to Xiaohongshu as they feared they were not going to be able to use TikTok after January 19. This has got Xiaohongshu to the top of the US Apple app store download rankings within just a few days. A newcomer said that she found Xiaohongshu very similar to TikTok and it was one of the few Chinese apps available in the US App Store. Earlier this month, Xiaohongshu made some changes, like moving the interaction buttons to new places, and made the design more and more like Douyin.
Many of the newcomers are apologizing (道歉) for not knowing Putonghua and paying the “cat tax” to stay here. The idea is quite simple: to make friends, you first “pay a tax.” Users are required to share pictures of their beloved pets and then “welcome” is left under their posts.
For many, the platform Xiaohongshu has turned into an “English learning app”, inspiring the creation of online “English corners”. Primary school students have rushed into the comment sections, looking for help from US users with their English homework. Meanwhile, others have started using Xiaohongshu to introduce Chinese culture. They share information about hanfu, Chinese New Year, mamianqun (horse-face skirt), and other cultural elements in the comments.
1. Why did Americans rush into Xiaohongshu?
A. They lost interest in watching TikTok videos. B. They feared TikTok might soon be banned.
C. They wanted to learn Chinese on Xiaohongshu. D. They were invited by Xiaohongshu’s developers.
2. What does the term “cat tax” most likely refer to?
A. The money users pay for using Xiaohongshu. B. The pets to give away to other users.
C. The pet photos users are required to share. D. The new fashion of taking photos of cats.
3. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Xiaohongshu will completely take the place of Douyin within a week.
B. Xiaohongshu has made changes resulting in the similarity to Douyin.
C. Chinese government will ban Americans from using Xiaohongshu.
D. Social medias like Xiaohongshu may bring more cultural exchange.
4. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. Xiaohongshu: Failure in The US market
B. Xiaohongshu: Success in Language Learning
C. From Ban fears to Cultural Connections—Xiaohongshu Helps
D. From a Refugee Camp to a Pet Land—Xiaohongshu Changes
【答案】1. B 2. C 3. D 4. C

In 1921, the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China changed the destiny (命运) of China.
One hundred years later, a movie titled 1921 will bring you back to the past to witness how a group of young people started the Party.
Directed by Huang Jianxin, 1921 is to be released on July 1. Huang has past experience in shooting historical films with grand themes. Previously, he directed the Beginning of the Great Revival (《建党伟业》) in 2011. Although the two films are set in a similar historical background, they are filmed with different angles.
In Huang’s view, the previous film focused on historical events by chronicling (记载) the beginning of the Wuchang Uprising (起义) in 1911 to Nanhu district in Jiaxing in 1921 when the First National Congress of the Party was held. The most recent film puts the personal stories of historical figures first by highlighting (聚焦) the period from 1920 to 1921.
“The restoration (重塑) of characters in 1921 is more important and more difficult, especially that of the 13 delegates (代表) of the First National Congress of the Party, ” Huang told CGTN. Considering their average at that time was only 28 years old, Huang and his team tried to understand and reproduce how they thought and why they resonate with (与……共鸣)today’s youth.
“It’s a story about ideals, beliefs and life values, ” Huang told Xinmin Evening News. “I hope the audience can truly learn about the spiritual (精神的) world of those young people and understand their patriotism (爱国主义).”

【9题详解】
第二段提到“a movie titled 1921 will bring you back to the past to witness how a group of young people started the Party.”,说明电影《1921》讲述的是一群年轻人如何创立中国共产党的故事。
最后一段黄建新说“I hope the audience can truly learn about the spiritual world of those young people and understand their patriotism.”,说明他希望人们从历史人物身上学习精神。
January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost (低成本的) computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat (打败) expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
11. How much did the team spend in building DeepSeek-R1?

On January 28, 2025, a special performance called YangBOT amazed audiences at the CCTV Spring Festival Gala, China’s most-watched TV show. Directed by the famous filmmaker Zhang Yimou, the show mixed traditional Chinese yangko dance with modern robot technology.
In the performance, humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes danced yangko, a joyful folk dance from northern China often seen during festivals. They spun (旋转) handkerchiefs and made creative group patterns. These robots were developed by Unitree, a Chinese robotics company. This was not Unitree’s first success—in 2021, their robot cows named “Ben Ben” danced as backup for singer Andy Lau.
The robots learned dance moves through AI and used laser navigation to move safely on the uneven (不平坦的) stage. Their strong joints (关节) (like knees with 360N·m power) helped them balance perfectly during fast steps. Zhang Yimou explained, “This dance isn’t just fun—it shows how technology can bring new life to traditions.”
Thanks to these innovations, the robots won the hearts of millions. On social media, topics like “Robot Yangko” trended quickly. Young viewers called it “cool”, while older audiences loved its humor and festive spirit.
