Chinese singer Liu Genghong is enjoying an extra spike in popularity recently after branching out into online fitness. The 49-year-old, aka Will Liu, posts fitness videos on Douyin, the Chinese version of TikTok. In the videos, he often works out to the fast-paced tune of his friend Jay Chou’s Compendium of Materia Medica, among other songs. Now his Douyin account has rocketed to 55 million followers and 53 million likes, arousing people’s interest in indoor exercise.
According to Pu Zhengning, associate professor of Southeast University in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, the epidemic has limited access to gyms and fitness centers, so simple aerobic exercise (有氧运动) that do not require equipment are perfect for people to perform at home. And that is exactly the demand that Liu has tapped into on his social media platforms. Since the COVID-19 outbreak began in 2020, downloads of fitness apps have climbed, clear sign of the growing popularity of online fitness. As an alternative to people gathering together to keep fit, the phenomenon is also helpful for epidemic prevention purposes.
Wei Fang, a student at Shandong Normal University, is one of Liu’s fans. Wei also posts short videos on Douyin to record her exercises. “My major requires me to sit for a long time, sometimes for the whole day,” she said. “So how could I refuse a star singer as a personal trainer!? Besides, when watching the livestream, I feel like I’m working out with friends, so that encourages me to keep going until the last minute,” added Wei, who claims to have shed 3.5 kilograms in just seven days, while also reaping the mental benefits of exercising with a more positive mood.
According to the 2022 Spring/Summer Sports and Fitness Consumption Trend Report, published by Jingdong Institute of Consumer and Industrial Development, the sales of yoga and dance products have achieved rapid growth since March. The sales of yoga stretchers, shoes, domes and bags increased by 868 percent, 816 percent, 110 percent and 104 percent, respectively.
Working with social media platforms, China’s sports governing body launched online games on April 28. Ding Dong, an official with the General Administration of Sport, said, “The aim of the games is to inspire the mass enthusiasm for fitness.”

You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it.
When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish eradicating their hunger and only then teach them to fish. Far too often, people ignore this common sense first step. They see someone who is struggling, and they rush to offer wisdom. “Let me tell you what I’d do in your position,” a well-meaning individual might offer.
But few of us understand the anxiety, confusion and uncertainty that come with overwhelming need. People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation?
Rushing to offer a struggling person long-term advice is a waste of time. Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill.
But how do we know whether a person needs a fish before a fishing lesson? Two things: One is the ability to pay attention. We need to know whether the other person is open and receptive, or looking at the world through narrowed eyes? You can’t just take their words but have to look at how the person acts and what they don’t say. The other is empathy(共情). The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.
41. What is the function of the first paragraph?
A. To illustrate a concept. B. To bring in a new viewpoint.
C. To introduce the background. D. To put up an example.
42. What does the underlined word“eradicating”mean in paragraph 2?
A. Getting rid of. B. Paying attention to.
C. Making up for. D. Putting up with.
43. What should we do first for those in disasters?
A. Get them to think straight. B. Enhance their confidence.
C. Satisfy their primary needs. D. Teach them a new skill.
44. Which does the author probably agree with according to the last paragraph?
A. Live and learn. B. Never teach a fish to swim.
C. Put yourself in others’ shoes. D. Don’t teach old dogs new tricks.
45. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Before fishing, one must have some fish.
B. Fishing is not as important as fish.
C. A lesson in need is a lesson indeed.
D. Teach a lesson when it is a perfect time.

My 83-year-old mother moved in with me in November of the previous year. Her health was in a poor state and I had to put my life on hold to care for her.
Each morning, I would help my mother out of bed, get her dressed, and prepare her breakfast, then sit with her. I rushed for a bowl when she felt sick, and ensure there was a fire burning to keep her warm. I cooked and persuaded her to take a few bites.
It’s a hard job caring for a sick or dying parent, whoever you are. But it was especially hard for me, I feel, because I am a doctor myself. I couldn’t help looking at her in two different ways. The medical professional saw a body and scrutinized it with the coldness that medicine requires. But the daughter saw the woman who had given birth to me, wiped my nose, sent me off to college and had been a constant presence in my life for over half a century.
Also, my mother didn’t appreciate how hard it was for me to care for her. I remember an exchange between her and the nurse who came to see her once a week:
“You could get some more help with care.”
“Oh, I don’t think I need that,” Mom said.
Mom didn’t understand that the help would have taken some of the burden off me. None of the treatments her doctors gave her worked, and finally her life became about comfort. She refused painkillers for a long time, but finally the pain convinced her. And when she accepted the painkillers she accepted the fact that she would die.
Illness and needs took us across personal boundaries I’d never before considered. And yet, while living and being and dying with Mom I witnessed something precious dawning. We became closer. We shared so many stories from our past that it was as if our memories had become one.
In the past our relationship had been difficult. We had often argued. But when the end came, both of us simply accepted that we looked at the world in different ways. We were daughter and mother and we loved each other. That was all that mattered.
46. Why was the aurthor’s task of taking care of her mom particularly challenging?
A. She was consumed with the demands of her own life.
B. She and her mom experienced a difficult relationship.
C. She was past the age where she could adequately attend to her mom.
D. She viewed her mom both as a patient and a beloved family member.
47. The underlined word “scrutinized” in Paragraph 3 probably means “______”.
A. held B. examined C. ignored D. left
48. How did the author probably feel about the conversation between her mom and the nurse?
A. Annoyed. B. Sympathetic. C. Relieved. D. Frustrated.
49. What led to the increasing bond between the author and her mom as indicated by the text?
A. The medical treatments provided by the doctors.
B. The collective experience of coping with the disease.
C. The author’s realization that her mother did not appreciate the help.
D. The mother’s choice to begin using the painkillers.
50. What did the author learn from the experience of looking after her sick mother?
A. Love holds greater significance than our differences.
B. Life itself is of primary importance.
C. It is essential for us to develop an understanding of others.
D. Family members are better off living independently from one another.

Music is a language which speaks to everyone—from the day we are born we hear music of some kind of our lives. But there are as many different kinds of music as there are different languages, and it is impossible to describe them all. Here are just a few well-known types.
Classical music is serious Western European music from the Middle Ages to the present (1500 to today) and it is often written for a large orchestra, or for a small group of players. Many instruments can be used. A lot of classical music is also written to be sung as opera. Classical music is very popular and schools often teach this type of music.
Jazz developed in the Southern States of North America at the beginning of this century. The black people of these states, who were originally slaves from Africa, had their own rhythms. Jazz brought classical music and African rhythms together.

Rhythm and Blues(R&B) developed from the Blues in America in the 1940s. It became faster and more complex and used more instruments, eg. Saxophone, guitar, piano, drums. The music was often about city life and white musicians started playing it as well.
Musicians developed Rock and Roll from Rhythm and Blues in the 1950s and it became popular with young people. It spread to Europe in the 1960s and is now known in most countries. A lot of pop music comes from Rock and Roll.

Bogucki was a fireman from Alaska with a wish to discover his spiritual side in the wilderness While Alaska’s not short of the sort of land (地形) that can bring a person closer to nature, Bogucki chose a very different environment — Australia’s Great Sandy Desert. Aside from the packs of wild Australian dogs that regularly tear cows or sheep to death, the desert is home to the desert death adder.
Bogucki set off in July, with the intention of cycling and walking several hundred miles across the desert. Fifteen days later a group of tourists found his bike abandoned on a path, alongside footprints tracing into the wilderness. The discovery led to a huge search operation, but police found no trace of Bogucki. After 12 days they guessed he’d either hitchhiked (搭便车) his way back to civilization or died, and called off the operation.
The missing fireman’s parents weren’t willing to give up on him, and hired their own private man. Bogucki was finally found by a news team in a helicopter, 43 days after he’d set off. The members in the helicopter successfully flew Bogucki out.
Bogucki had survived by drinking muddy water and eating wild flowers. He had lost as much as 20 kilograms of weight, but was otherwise in surprisingly good condition. The doctor that treated him said he had nothing worse than a few scratches (刮痕), a far cry from the sunburn and blisters (水泡).
The number of days during which Bogucki was missing was 43, which was almost unbelievable. When asked whether he regretted his decision, Bogucki said, “I indeed suffered a lot but I have had my willpower tested too, which is of great value to the rest of my life.”

【答案】41. B 42. A 43. B 44. C 45. B
根据第一段“You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it. (你以前听过一句中国古话:授之以鱼不如授之以渔。你现在甚至可能在点头表示同意。然而,我们可以有一个不同的理解。)”可推知,第一段是为了引入新的观点——对“授之以鱼不如授之以渔”的不同理解,故选B。
【42题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线单词上文“When a person is starving, that’s not the time to fill their head with knowledge but to first give the person a fish (当一个人在挨饿的时候,那不是给他灌输知识的时候,而是先给他一条鱼)”可知,当一个人挨饿时,先给他一条鱼,这样能消除他的饥饿,由此可知,划线单词“eradicating”意为“消除”,与A项“Getting rid of. (摆脱)”意思相近,故选A。
【43题详解】
细节理解题。根据三段中“People meeting with personal disasters don’t have the ability to think straight. Their nerves may be shot. Their confidence may be non-existent. Can you imagine what it would be like to be in that person’s situation? (遇到个人灾难的人没有直接思考的能力。他们的神经可能会受到刺激。他们的信心可能根本不存在。你能想象处在那种情况下会是什么样子吗?)”和第四段中“Instead, it makes far more sense to help them regain their emotional balance. Once their ears, heart and mind open, you’ll have an opportunity to teach a new skill. (相反,帮助他们恢复情绪平衡更有意义。一旦他们的耳朵,心灵和头脑打开,你将有机会教一个新的技能。)”可知,那些处在灾难中的人们没有信心,所以为了帮助他们,我们首先要做的是帮助他们恢复情绪,即增强他们的信心,故选B。
【44题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“The other is empathy (共情). The more successful you are, the harder it is to imagine what it must be like to be the opposite. Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson. (另一个是共情。你越成功,就越难想象成为失败的人是什么样子。试着在授之以渔课之前为情感接受创造一个安全的环境。)”可推知,作者建议我们要产生共情,即要换位思考,站在别人的角度考虑。故选C。
【45题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“You’ve heard an old Chinese saying before: Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. You may even be nodding your head in agreement right now. However, we can have a different understanding about it. (你以前听过一句中国古话:授之以鱼不如授之以渔。你现在甚至可能在点头表示同意。然而,我们可以有一个不同的理解。)”后文中也提到“Try to create a safe environment for emotional acceptance before the fishing lesson.”(试着在钓鱼课之前为情感接受创造一个安全的环境。)全文提到与“授人以鱼不如授人以渔”相反的观念,在教授别人技能之前,要先看一下这个人的情况怎样,而不是不管别人的情况来灌输知识。由此判断,全文旨在表达“钓鱼不如鱼重要”。故选B。

C
【答案】46. D 47. B 48. D 49. B 50. A

Blues was originally black country music from the Southern States at the beginning of this century. It is slow, usually sad music which is often sung by one person with a guitar.

四、阅读表达:本大题共1小题,共10分。
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
56. Why did Bogucki decide to go to Australia’s Great Sandy Desert? (no more than 15 words)
