Vicky’s mother opened the door. She had a look at Vicky’s bedroom.
“What a mess! It looks as if a hurricane passed through Vicky’s bedroom,” said Vicky’s mother. “I must ask her to clean it.”
Vicky was eating breakfast. Her father came into the kitchen and said, “Mom wants you to clean your room. It looks as if a hurricane passed through it.”
Joe, Vicky’s little brother, asked, “A hurricane? Is that a bad thing?”
“Sure it is,” said his father.
“I’ll do it after school, Dad,” said Vicky. “My first class is geography and Mr. Miller hates people to be late.” And off she ran through the front door.
Twenty minutes later, Vicky ran into her classroom.
“Today,” said Mr. Miller, “we’re going to learn about hurricanes. Have any of you seen a hurricane?” Vicky thought about her bedroom, but she said nothing.
“I haven’t seen one. Not a real one but I watched a program on TV and I know they destroy (破坏) things and leave a mess,” said James who sat next to Vicky.
“Yes,” said Mr. Miller. “But today I’m going to surprise you. Sometimes hurricanes do good.” “Hurricanes can be good things?” Vicky asked.
“Oh, yes,” said Mr. Miller. “Hurricanes bring a lot of water to rivers and lakes that are becoming dry. Animals and fish come back to live in them. Hurricanes also pick up heat from the very hot areas of the world and drop it in less warm places.”
“So, hurricanes can be good things,” Vicky said to herself. “I’m going to show Mom the good part.”
When Vicky got home in the afternoon, she began to clean up her bedroom. She put all of her things in the right places.
“Mom,” she called. “Can you come here for a minute?”
Vicky’s mother put her head around the door.
“Vicky!” she said. “That looks amazing. I told your dad this morning that it looked as if a hurricane had hit it!”
“Are you sure that’s a bad thing, Mom?” asked Vicky, smiling.

C
Values and Actions: Closing the distance
Almost everyone feels uncomfortable when their actions do not agree with their inner values. For example, a man might value family time but work 80 hours a week. A boy may love his parents deeply but shout at them when he is stressed. Or, a woman may want to stay healthy but cannot say no to fast food.
This disagreement can lead to bad results, such as worse relationships (关系), limited self-growth and self-doubt (自我怀疑). When we fail to meet our own standards, we may get hurt deeply inside. Shame makes us stay silent, which makes things worse. One reason for the silence is that admitting (承认) these actions feels like showing weakness or mistakes—things society tells us to hide. More importantly, seeing this disagreement forces us to face the uncomfortable truths about ourselves directly—it is painful but necessary for growth.
Realizing and facing these actions can provide a chance for change. By looking into the causes of our actions, we can begin to understand our actions more easily and work with our values. Research shows that mindfulness (正念练习) and open communication can help bring about this change. These methods help us slow down, reflect (反思), and make choices to reach our values.
The key to solving this disagreement lies in compassion (同情与自我关怀) for ourselves and others. We should understand that aligning our actions with our values is a difficult challenge for everyone. If we realize that this is a common human experience, we can begin to break down the shame that prevents us from having conversation and change. We can speak more openly and find support. This helps us take the necessary steps to make our inner world and our outer actions agree.
Although the distance between values and actions is common, we can still cross it through practice and start a journey to find our true selves.

First, and most important, never do things that bore you. If you are truly interested in your work, you can gain a lot. Without interest, you will only waste your time and discover nothing new.
Next, work with people who are cleverer than you. It’s like playing tennis. You only get better when playing with someone who makes you work harder to reach a higher level. It sounds like hard work, but it does good to you.
Thirdly, you must be ready to take risks. You can’t stay in the “safety zone (地带)” all the time, feeling comfortable and knowing all the answers. Science is about answering difficult questions and, sometimes, making mistakes.
Finally, don’t be afraid to let others check your ideas and listen to their opinions. You don’t have to agree with everything, but advice from experts is the best way to check if your work is of value. Their doubts (怀疑) will certainly help your thinking.
I hope these secrets can help you achieve your dream!
根据演讲内容,补全笔记,注意:1-9题每空不超过两词,10题用一句话作答。

【答案】例文:
Dear Tom,
I’m glad to hear that you are coming to China! You asked about the ways of payment here, and I’m happy to share some information with you.
In China, cash is still accepted, but mobile payment is by far the most popular choice, especially with apps like Ali Pay and Wechat Pay. You can scan QR codes to pay for almost anything, from large shopping malls to small street stalls. It’s really convenient because you can pay anytime and anywhere, and you’ll also keep clear digital records of all your expenses.
To make your trip smoother, here are a few tips. First, you can link your international bank card to these payment apps in advance, so you don’t have to worry about running out of cash. Also, make sure your phone is fully charged before going out, as you’ll need it to make payments. It’s a good idea to carry a small amount of cash just in case, though.
I hope you have a great time in China!
Yours,
Li Hua

第三节(共10小题;每题1分,满分10分)
假如你是Jim,最近参加了Dr. Watson一场演讲,请根据演讲内容完成笔记与反思
Dear classmates,
It’s my honor to share the secrets to being a good scientist with you.
