Do-it-yourself crystal (晶体)
You can grow crystals using bicarbonate of soda. The experiment (实验) shows you how.
1. Fill two jars with hot water. Spoon about six teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda into each jar. Keep adding more soda until no more will dissolve.
2. Put the jars in a warm place with a plate between them. Make sure they won’t get moved.
3. Cut a piece of wool as long as your arm. Tie a paperclip to each end of it, and place one end in each jar.
4. Leave the jars for at least a week. Crystals should grow gradually along the wool, and hang down over the plate.
What’s happening?
Bicarbonate of soda is usually sold as a powder (粉末) made up of tiny crystals. The powder dissolves in water, which means the powder becomes mixed with water and disappears, The mixture of water and soda is soaked up (浸进) by the wool that ties the jars together. The water then evaporates (蒸发) slowly, leaving behind pure bicarbonate of soda-which reforms into big crystals.
21. In this experiment, you may need some containers (容器) like _________.
①two jars ②a plate ③a piece of wool ④a paperclip
A. ①③ B. ②④ C. ①② D. ③④
22. Both ends of the wool are placed in the two jars to _________ the mixture.
A. soak up B. leave behind C. cool down D. hang down
23. The underlined word “dissolves” in the last paragraph means “becomes part of _________” in Chinese.
A. water B. powder C. gas D. solid (固体)
24. According to Step 3, which is the right length of the wool you need to cut?
A. B. C. D.
25. According to the experiment, the following statement “_________” is TRUE.
A. Only six teaspoons of bicarbonate of soda are needed.
B. Two jars should be put in a cool place with a plate between them.
C. Leave the jars for at least seven days, and then you may see the crystals.
D. No crystals may hang down over the plate because they have disappeared.
21. C 22. A 23. A 24. B 25. C

Few film series have seen China’s film market grow so fast as Avatar has.
In January 2010, when the first Avatar was released (上映), the Chinese mainland had only 4,700 screens in 1,680 cinemas, with just 14 IMAX screens. Now, 15 years later, China has over 92,550 screens (nearly 800 IMAX) in more than 15,430 cinemas more than any other country. Chinese movie fans now have many great ways to watch Avatar: Fire and Ash, the third film of the series, like CINITY, IMAX and Dolby. By Monday, this 198-minute film had made over 700 million yuan in China and stayed at the top of the daily box office since Dec 19.
What makes Chinese fans proud is that Chinese technology plays a big role in showing the film. CINITY, a screening system made by a Beijing company, was used for the film’s Chinese premiere in Sanya. It’s the first Hollywood movie shown in China with CINITY’s special format (LED, 3D, 4K, 48 frames per second), making the watching experience more real. Director James Cameron even had a CINITY screen in his New Zealand studio, set up by Chinese workers in 15 days.
Cameron first thought of Avatar at 19 and wrote the script in 1995. He said the most important thing in making films is acting, not just technology. The new film tells the story of the Sully family on Pandora, facing new enemies. Chinese stars like Zhang Ziyi and Deng Chao dubbed (配音) the film in Mandarin. Deng said Avatar is like an old friend and a teacher to him. The film’s themes about family, courage and nature are meaningful for people all over the world.

35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The story of Avatar: Fire and Ash.

In nature, animals need to change over time if they want to survive. These changes usually happen slowly. But one kind of bird, the Anna’s hummingbird, is changing faster than other animals.
Anna’s hummingbirds are tiny birds, and they are no bigger than an egg. They have beautiful feathers and a long beak. However, researchers found that more and more of these birds were born with longer and thinner beaks.
Researchers made this discovery by studying more than 100 hummingbird specimens (标本) in museums. They measured their beaks and found that the shape and size of their beaks changed a lot.
Amazingly, the physical changes began when people started putting up feeders (喂食器) in their gardens or backyards. The feeders served to help the birds during hard times. In winter, people filled the feeders with sugar water. And the birds would drink it for energy. To drink more, the birds developed longer and thinner beaks.
Surprisingly, the longer beaks made room for bigger tongues (舌头), allowing the birds to get more sugar water at a time. Their beaks also became sharper That could help the birds protect food from other hungry animals.
The changes didn’t stop there. Anna’s hummingbirds now live in more areas. They used to live mostly in northern Mexico and Southern California. Now, you can find them even in Canada.
Professor Mark Jones explained, “Warmer winters because of climate change might have helped a bit, but the feeders probably played the biggest part. They offered the birds food when it was cold. This helped the birds survive in northern areas.”
36. Which question does paragraph 2 answer?
A. Where do Anna’s hummingbirds live?
B. What do Anna’s hummingbirds look like?
C. How did Anna’s hummingbirds get their name?
D. Why are Anna’s hummingbirds changing so fast?
37. What do we know about the birds from paragraph 5?
A. Their ability to protect food has improved.
B. Their favourite food has become less.
C. They look more beautiful with longer beaks.
D. They have bigger tongues than other birds.
38. What changed about Anna’s hummingbirds?
①Their life length. ②Their physical appearance.
③Their population. ④Their living areas.
A. ①② B. ①④ C. ②③ D. ②④
39. Why did the birds change according to Professor Mark Jones?
A. Climate change makes winter shorter. B. It was getting harder for them to find food.
C. Their living environments became worse. D. They needed more energy from the feeders.
40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All animals need humans’ help to survive.
B. Human activities can unexpectedly affect wildlife.
C. Anna’s hummingbirds are the most amazing birds.
D. Anna’s hummingbirds need more areas to survive.
B 37. A 38. D 39. D 40. B
第二段描述了安娜蜂鸟的外貌特征:“Anna’s hummingbirds are tiny birds, and they are no bigger than an egg. They have beautiful feathers and a long beak.”
第五段指出:“That could help the birds protect food from other hungry animals.”
根据第二段“more and more of these birds were born with longer and thinner beaks”(外貌变化)和第六段“Anna’s hummingbirds now live in more areas...you can find them even in Canada”(生活区域变化)可知,安娜蜂鸟的外貌和生活区域都发生了变化。
第七段中Professor Mark Jones指出:“the feeders probably played the biggest part. They offered the birds food when it was cold.”

In the north of China, we can find the Inner Mongolian Plateau. As the second largest plateau, it’s about 700,000 square kilometres. It lies mostly between 1,000 and 1,200 metres above sea level. The plateau is mostly flat (平坦的) and has wide grassland. ___42___
The Loess Plateau is the third-largest plateau in our country. It rises between 1,000 and 2,000 metres above sea level. The plateau is covered with the yellowish soil (土壤). ___43___ Through many studies, some Chinese scientists hold that it was carried by the north wind from the Inner Mongolian Plateau and the Mongolian inland areas over thousands of years.
The Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau is the smallest among the four major plateaus. It mainly spreads over the provinces of Yunnan and Guizhou. The plateau has a great difference in altitude, from 400 to 3,500 metres above sea level, and it goes down from the northwest to the southeast. ___44___ It has many mountains and valleys (峡谷).

E“You may wonder where the yellowish soil came from.”
A“The plateau is not flat.”
C“These four plateaus each have their own beauty.”

13-year-old Sarah sits in her yard, laying out her handmade crafts (手工制品) on the table. There are baskets, flower pots, and cloth bags—all made from recycled materials. They are not just creative objects; they’re part of Sarah’s project to make a greener community.
Two years ago, Sarah would pass by a park near her house every day after school. Plastic bottles, empty cans, and broken toys littered the roadside. Seeing this, Sarah felt sad.
One afternoon, Sarah noticed some kids selling orange juice at the park. People stopped to buy it. That was when Sarah got an idea.
“Mom, what if we sell handmade crafts?” she asked excitedly that evening. “Then we can buy trees for our neighborhood with the money!”
With her mom’s help, Sarah started making crafts with great interest, using old boxes, plastic bottles and empty cans. Every day after school, she sat in her yard, waiting for customers. At first, no one came. Sarah felt down, but she didn’t give up.
Later, people began to stop by. A kind woman bought a cloth bag, saying it was perfect for shopping. Kids liked the flower pots, and one boy even asked Sarah to make him a special basket for his toys. By the end of the first month, Sarah had made $150! She bought 30 small trees. Together with her parents, they planted the trees around the park and along the sidewalks.
Now, the neighborhood looks nicer, and the birds have more places to rest. Sarah even teaches her friends how to make eco-friendly (环保的) crafts after school. They organize sales every month to raise money for new projects like bird feeders.
This year, Sarah shared her story at a local community event. “Making a greener community is important,” she said proudly. “If everyone helps a little, we can make our life better.” She believes that no effort is too small when it comes to caring for the environment.

A. Climate change makes winter shorter. B. It was getting harder for them to find food.

40. What can we learn from the passage?
A. All animals need humans’ help to survive.
