Sugar painting, as the name means, is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to enjoy.
Since the Warring States Period (战国时代), people loved sweets and had different ways of making sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, people greatly improved skills of sugar making. So sugar, the precious thing that once could only enter homes of the kings, also went into common people’s homes. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck to the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting came out.
Sugar painting is different from other paintings. Sugar painters use syrup (糖浆) as the material (材料), a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to finish the work in a short time. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is finished.
▲ The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, only a few old sugar painters are willing to pass on this kind of art.
For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has entered people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China.

Progress means the act of going forward. Making any kind of progress can make us healthy and happy in life. By setting and actively working towards our goals, we can make progress in our life.
To make more progress in life, start looking at problems in a different way. Whatever happens, if we think positively, we can make more progress and become stronger.
Having confidence is helpful for us to make progress. Confidence comes from different places, such as proper education, training or having good relationships. We should also stay with people who believe in our success and actively support us. These people can help push us towards progress.
Slow progress is still progress. Just as the old saying goes, “It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop.” Progress usually comes a lot more slowly than we expect. Even if progress is slow, try not to be worried. One important thing is that we keep taking steps towards our goals.
The road to progress is not always smooth. Most progress often comes with setbacks along the way. Sometimes, maybe it feels like we’re taking one step forward and three steps back, but it won’t always be like that. Keep going towards our goals and we can much more easily make the progress we want.
Progress doesn’t always happen in a straight line. As long as we keep working, we will achieve higher levels.
31. What does Paragraph 3 tell us?
A. We should support different people. B. Some people can push us to failure.
C. Confidence helps us make progress. D. Different schools expect the same progress.
32. What does the writer say about slow progress?

On January 20, 2025, a Chinese company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This AI can do math problems, write computer codes, and answer questions like the best AIs in the world. But it costs much less money to build. The team used only $5.58 million and 2,048 computer parts for two months. This shows that smart ideas are better than just spending a lot of money.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use, and people can even change it. On its first day, more than 19,000 computer experts around the world started using it. A German scientist said, “Using R1 experiments costs only $10, but other AIs need $300.” Even a top scientist from Meta (a big U.S. company) said, “This free AI could change the world.”
U.S. companies are now worried because experts say China is becoming a leader in AI very fast. A report in Nature (a famous science magazine) called R1 a “big success”, showing that good ideas are more important than expensive tools.
A DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to help everyone, not just rich people.” With R1, China shows that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
