Elli and I had a single goal:to photograph polar
bears. We were staying at a research camp outside
“the polar bear capital of the world”一the town of
Churchill in Manitoba,Canada.
Taking pictures of polar bears is amazing but also
dangerous.Polar bears -like all wild animals-
should be photographed from a safe distance. When
I'm face to face with a polar bear,I like it to be
through a camera with a telephoto lens.But
sometimes, that is easier said than done. This was
one of those times.
As Elli and I cooked dinner,a young male polar
bear who was playing in a nearby lake sniffed, and
smelled our garlic bread.
The hungry bear followed his nose to our camp,
which was surrounded by a high wire fence. He
pulled and bit the wire.He stood on his back legs
and pushed at the wooden fence posts.
Terrified,Elli and I tried all the bear defense
actions we knew.We yelled at the bear, hit pots
hard, and fired blank shotgun shells into the air.
Sometimes loud noises like these will scare bears off.
Not this polar bear though-he just kept trying to
tear down the fence with his massive paws(爪子).
I radioed the camp manager for help.He told
me a helicopter was on its way,but it would be 30
minutes before it arrived.Making the best of this
close encounter(相遇),I took some pictures of the
bear.
Elli and I feared the fence wouldn't last through
30 more minutes of the bear's punishment. The camp
manager suggested I use pepper spray. The spray
burns the bears'eyes,but doesn't hurt them.So I
approached our uninvited guest slowly and, through
the fence, sprayed him in the face. With an angry
roar(吼叫),the bear ran to the lake to wash his
eyes.

My cousin Max was the most admired person in all of Boston.By the age of 19,he was a star
basketball player at Harvard University.I wanted to be just like him.So when Max asked me to join
him on a spring hiking trip in the White Mountains of New Hampshire,I said yes!
After planning the trip,we gathered clothes and supplies and then set off on our adventure. We
reached the White Mountains National Forest by early evening. On the way to our campsite,Max
pointed to a small house far away in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station where
the foresters worked.
Max knew all the tricks of an experienced camper. After we gathered enough wood from the
forest floor,he started the campfire using only a flint and steel-no matches. After a day of
traveling,we were very hungry. We ate chicken and pasta and some stew as well.
Exhausted,we crawled into our sleeping bags early.Max was still talking about his past
camping adventures when a chilling wind picked up from the north. The temperature dropped, and it
began to snow.Max knew of a way to increase the temperature inside the tent.He dragged a log
from the woods and placed it near the campfire, using a fire reflector to direct the heat into the tent.
Soon, the tent was warm again, and thoughts of the mountain trails filled my dreams.
I was still dreaming when Max woke me up in a panic. Our tent was on fire! The snow had
stopped during the night, but the wind had fanned the flames of the fire towards our tent.Frightened
by the flames,I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed with Max inside.Without any
hesitation,I reached into the burning tent, grabbed him,and dragged him to the frozen lake.We
checked each other to make sure neither of us was hurt.

Later,as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm,we considered our situation.
Suddenly,we heard a noise in the forest.

handed him that class picture. He stood up slowly, the
envelope trembling in his hands."No,I didn't...,"he
murmured,cheeks reddening.Miss Carter smiled,
"Your classmates did."Lucas raised his head;his gaze
swept across the room until it found mine.I gave him a
small wave.Around us,everyone began to clap-some
knowing the whole story, others just sharing the joy.
Lucas's eyes brimmed, but this time they were tears of
gratitude.A surge of warmth filled my chest.I finally
got Mom's words:when you look with your heart, even
a single dollar can wrap a friend in lasting warmth.
突然,我想到了Lucas。他能付得起那额外一美

我们掏空了口袋:两个25美分硬币、三个10美分硬

给Carter老师,让她保密。她笑着点了,点头。走回

Later,as we stood by the burning tent to keep
warm,we considered our situation.Surrounded by the
vast White Mountains National Forest and with all our
supplies consumed by the fire,we felt utterly isolated.
Wearing only thin underwear,we shivered violently. Our
cries for help went unanswered, echoing in vain through
the trees.“The ranger station!”Max exclaimed,his voice
a mix of desperation and hope."We've got to get the
foresters'attention!"We fed more wood into the fire,
pinning all our hopes on someone noticing the smoke.
After waiting what seemed like centuries,we were on
the edge of mental collapse.
Suddenly,we heard a noise in the forest. With it
becoming louder and closer,a dark shape approached
us一it was a forester!“That smoke was a pretty clear
call for help,"he grinned,tapping his flashlight.We
gratefully climbed into his warm vehicle as he put out
the fire.On the way to the ranger station,we briefly
explained what had happened and expressed our sincere
gratitude for his prompt assistance. At the station,we
put on some warm clothes and called our parents.Only
then did I realize:survival isn't just luck it's the
courage to act, even when all feels lost.
