What's your name?”isa
question most frequently asked when people meet for
the first time. But for me,it was the first challenge I
encountered as an international student in Ireland.
The pronunciation system of the Chinese
language is quite different from that of English. For
native speakers of English, some Chinese words are
rather difficult to pronounce. My given name Qiuyu
(秋雨),for instance,happened to be a great
challenge for many of them.Every time I gave a self-
introduction,I had to explain how to pronounce my
name at least five times, yet they still could not say
it the way I did.
Once in a lecture, the professor tried repeating
my name after me over and over in front of thirty
classmates,I really did not know whether I should
continue correcting him or simply drop the matter.I
feared that my classmates might grow tired of my
efforts or even lose the patience with me.After all,I
did care about how others would think of me.I
realized that if I didn't stop, the entire lecture would
be ruined.“It's okay,professor,”I shrugged(耸
)The awkward moment ended with the class
erupting into laughter.I forced a smile,unsure how
to respond further.
After that incident,I stopped acting as a
"Chinese teacher".Instead of correcting others when
they were struggling to pronounce my name,I just
smiled and nodded approvingly.This approach
spared me the discomfort of having to over-explain.
However,I soon found that by doing so,I might be
losing something more important:the opportunity to
share a small part of my cultural identity.

I sat at the breakfast table with my five-year-old daughter,Ella, trying to ignore the ache in my
stomach..“Mama,want to play?”“Not today,sweetheart.”I shook my head.These days I could
barely get out of bed.I was still recovering from an operation.I hoped for strength and happiness,
but the future seemed so hopeless.
Suddenly,Ella jumped up from her spot on the kitchen floor."Bird!"she shouted, rushing to
our courtyard.Sure enough, there was a lovely sparrow perched in a maple tree.It sat there for a
few moments, and then flew away.Strange,I'd never seen one in our neighborhood before.
When I dragged myself to the kitchen the next morning, the sparrow was back. This time it was
with a partner carrying twigs(细枝).“Look Ella,”I said,pointing to the tree.“They're going to
make a nest. The sparrows flew in and out of the courtyard all week, building on top of the maple
tree.
Ella could hardly contain her excitement.Every morning, she'd run into the kitchen and take
her spot by the sliding glass door, talking to the birds while they worked. Her happiness was
infectious(有感染力的).As much as I was sad,I couldn't help but look forward to the sparrows'
visits too.
Then it all went wrong. The courtyard was a safe enough spot for a nest, but the maple tree's
broad,thin leaves were far from stable.One night,a strong wind blew,throwing the sparrows'nest
to the ground.I heard the twigs break apart.
I surveyed the damage.Nothing good ever lasted.I wouldn't blame the sparrows if they never
came back. But they returned. And they paid no attention to the pile of twigs that had once been
their nest. They started again from the beginning.Again, though, the wind destroyed all their hard
work. The next day,and the next, they started again,as if nothing had happened.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

We sat down next to each other, but David
wouldn't look at me.His confidence was in danger of
bursting like a bubble. It was clear that he feared he
would be judged by his appearance rather than his
character.Knowing David trusted me,I cleared my
throat and said,"Beautiful forest,isn't it?"Slowly and
curiously,he raised his head and looked around.I
continued,"Those trees never stop reaching for the
sky, regardless of their position or shape. They never
let others define them."On hearing this,David got up
without a word. But there was a sparkle in his eyes-
he had made a decision.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line

with the other runners. He received curious glances
from other schools'runners but a warm welcome from
his schoolmates. Then fired the starting pistol, and
David dashed forward, tackling a course that strained
even normal children, let alone someone with his
condition.He bounded,hobbled,plodded,persistently
pursuing his goal. The coach and I followed to the finish
line,where classmates lined the track,screaming
“Come on!You can make it!”To our delight,.David
crossed 20th place,and the big,toothy smile returned
to his face, making me feel incredibly proud.

birdhouse wasn't perfect, but it was solidly stable and

I stood by the sliding glass door, waiting and hoping.

Hearing my daughter's excited voice,as clear as a bell,
I looked up.There they were -swooping and circling
near the nest.A few weeks later, three baby birds

their cheerful chirps,I felt my own strength returning.
