I was invited to a
cookout on an old friend's farm in western
Washington.I parked my car outside the farm and
walked past a milking house which had apparently
not been used in many years.A noise at a window
caught my attention,so I entered it.It was a
hummingbird(蜂鸟),desperately trying to escape.
She was covered in spider--webs(蛛网)and was
barely able to move her wings. She ceased her
struggle the instant I picked her up.
With the bird in my cupped hand,I looked
around to see how she had gotten in.The broken
window glass was the likely answer.I stuffed a piece
of cloth into the hole and took her outside, closing
the door securely behind me.
When I opened my hand, the bird did not fly
away;she sat looking at me with her bright eyes.I
removed the sticky spider-webs that covered her head
and wings.Still, she made no attempt to fly.
Perhaps she had been struggling against the window
too long and was too tired?Or too thirsty?
As I carried her up the blackberry-lined path
toward my car where I kept a water bottle, she began
to move.I stopped, and she soon took wing but did
not immediately fly away.Hovering(悬停),she
approached within six inches of my face. For a very
long moment, this tiny creature looked into my eyes,
turning her head from side to side. Then she flew
quickly out of sight.
During the cookout,I told my hosts about the
hummingbird incident. They promised to fix the
window.As I was departing,my friends walked me
to my car.I was standing by the car when a
hummingbird flew to the center of our group and
began hovering. She turned from person to person
until she came to me.She again looked directly into
my eyes, then let out a squeaking call and was gone.
For a moment,all were speechless.Then someone
said,“She must have come to say goodbye.”

A few weeks later,I went to the farm again. When I
walked past the milking house,my gaze unconsciously fell on it,
and mixed feelings washed over me.Was another little creature
trapped?Or would I meet“her”again?Every nerve in my body
screamed for me to step inside.hesitated, and then pushed the
door open. The air was thick with dust and the scent of old
wood.I scanned the room:the hole in the window had been
neatly patched, and there was no sign of her.Maybe she'd nested
in a safer place.Disappointed,I lingered for a moment,an odd
emptiness rising within me.
I was just about to leave when the hummingbird appeared.
There she was,her green wings shining in the sunlight, hovering
right in front of me..⑦A cry of joy escaped my throat.®“Hey,old
gil!How's everything?”I whispered..⑩She settled into my
cupped hands and looked up at me,just like before.I felt her
tiny body tremble, then she let out a soft squeak and vanished into
the sky.I watched her disappear, awestruck by the miracle of
life.Right then I knew every heartbeat was precious, deserving
kindness;even the smallest gesture could light up a creature's
whole world.

⑦以“A cry of joy”生理反应具象
人的承诺,“no sign of her'”则强化
鸟的灵动,“right in front of me”的空
⑨“settled”“looked up”复刻了前
①“tremble'”“let out a soft squeak”
③通过“thick with dust'”“scent of old
②“every heartbeat was precious”点
gesture could light up.”

Our family has two dogs,Bella and Bandit. We took in both the mixed breed dogs after they
were abandoned in the country. We live in an area between city and country. This area is rich with
farmland, woods, and various animals. Both of our dogs constantly want to run and will do so at any
given opportunity.I have to keep them chained, even though my yard is fenced,so that I do not
have to pay any fines for recovering them from the city pound(流浪狗收留所).
This morning I made the silly mistake of waiting until the last possible minute to put the dogs
out.As I was walking the first one out,the second ran past me in a surprisingly fast move and she
was gone.I called for her to return, but she chose to ignore my commands and headed off for a day
of joy.Having a disobedient(不服从的)dog really upset me.I said goodbye to the dog and went
about my business.Anyway, when I picked up my daughter from school,I just happened to mention
that Bella might be missing.“I'll tell you this!If she has been caught by the cops(警察),I will
not be paying her fines this time,"I said.
I noticed that my daughter had her head turned away from me and was silent for over 5 minutes.
I asked,“Are you mad at me?”“Yes,Iam,”she replied,now looking at me calmly.“Why does
this upset you so much?"I wondered out loud."Bella obviously does not care for her living
arrangements here,or she would not run off every time she has a chance, would she?"I cleverly
remarked.
I have never noticed my daughter spending much time with this dog,so I could not imagine that
the thought of losing her would be so painful. In my mind,I have given Bella a nice home.If she is
silly enough to leave all that behind to chase some neighbor's cows, then "goodbye"is my attitude.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Bella was more than just a pet to her-she was a

empty-handed.Eventually,my daughter fell asleep,
exhausted by her tears,in my comforting arms.
After a long,stressful night,we finally received a

Bella at our feet, basking in the warm golden sunlight,
we were filled with gratitude and a newfound
appreciation for the love and loyalty our pets brought
into our lives. We grinned, hearts brimming with
happiness.
