A primary school teacher decided to have her class play a game. The teacher told each student to bring a plastic (塑料) bag with a few potatoes in it to school. Each student would “name” their potatoes after people they did not like. Therefore, the number of potatoes would be different depending (取决于) on how many people each student disliked.
The next day, all of the students brought their potatoes to school. Some kids had just one or two potatoes, while others had as many as five or six. The teacher then told the children that they would have to carry their potatoes with them wherever they went for one week.
Several days passed by. Some of the students started to complain (抱怨) because their potatoes began to go bad and smell terrible. The students who carried more potatoes also complained about how heavy their bags were.
One week later, the game was over. The teacher asked, “How did you feel about carrying around your potatoes for a week?” The students complained once again. The teacher simply smiled and said, “This is what it’s like to carry hatred (憎恨) in your heart. You have to carry it with you wherever you go. If you can’t stand carrying those potatoes for one week, can you imagine having hate (仇恨) in your heart for an entire (整个的) lifetime?”

Everyone knows that sleep is important for our health, but do you know that it can also help us learn a new language? A study found that brain (大脑) activity during sleep can improve our memories.
In the study, 35 English speakers learnt a language called Mini Pinyin. This language is based on (以……为基础) Chinese, but it has similar grammar (语法) to that of English. About half of those people learnt the language in the morning. They stayed awake (醒着) and had a test later that day. The others learnt in the evening and then went to sleep. They were tested the next morning. The researchers found that the people who slept after learning remembered much more than those who just stayed awake.
When we sleep, our brain goes through different stages. One of these is called REM sleep. It usually first happens about 90 minutes after we fall asleep. During this time, brain activity is very high and we often dream.
Another sleep stage is non-REM sleep, when brain activity is much lower. But during this time, our brain sorts and saves new information. This is thanks to two kinds of brain waves. They can move new information from the short- term memory part of the brain to the long-term memory part.
Scott Cousens worked on the study. He said the results showed sleep plays a key role in remembering information, such as a new language. “Sleep is not just for us to have a rest. It’s an important time for the brain to change and grow,” he said.
So, if you want to improve your English skills, the secret might be going to bed!
8.Which is TRUE about the 35 people in the study?
A.Some learnt Chinese while others learnt English.
B.Some went to bed before being tested but others didn’t.
C.Some learnt in the morning while others learnt at noon.
9.What do we know about REM sleep?
A.It is the last stage of our sleep.
B.It happens just after we fall asleep.
C.Many people dream during the stage.
10.What does the underlined word “They” refer to (指的是)?
A.Brain waves. B.Brain activities. C.Different parts of the brain.
11.What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A.Scott’s suggestions for English speakers.
B.Scott’s idea about the importance of sleep.
C.The reason why Scott worked on the study.

Do you ever feel like your thoughts are going around in circles? One minute, you’re thinking about your homework. The next minute, you’re thinking about your plans for the weekend.
Is it possible for us to slow down our thoughts or even stop them completely? It depends on your definition (定义) of “thinking”, according
to Michael Halassa, a researcher at MIT, US. We basically go through each day in one of two states-we either realize that we’re thinking or we don’t. Our brains won’t stop thinking completely until we die.
“The brain never actually stops thinking in a broader sense. Most thoughts are actually in the background (后台) without us noticing them and there’s not really a way to turn these things off.” Halassa said. Human brains can unconsciously process (无意识地处理) about 11 million pieces of information per second, according to Forbes.
You can compare this to how a computer works. Even when you aren’t using your computer while it’s turned on, it is still running operations “in the background”. Your computer, much like your brain, is constantly “thinking”, even if you’re not actively using it.
Some researchers have referred to this as “thought-chatter”. It describes the random (胡乱的) thoughts that come in and out of our mind very quickly at different times during the day, according to Steve Taylor, a psychology lecturer.
Some thought-chatter can be enjoyable, such as daydreaming. Albert Einstein came up with his famous theory of relativity (相对论) while daydreaming at work. But too much thought-chatter can make us feel too anxious or worried, Taylor said. Meditation (冥想) can help us clean up some of this thought-chatter.
12.What happens to you when “your thoughts are going around in circles”?
A.You cannot stop thinking about past events.
B.You are thinking about one thing repeatedly.
C.You are thinking about one thing after another.
13.What does Paragraph 4 try to prove (证明)?
A.Human brains are thinking all the time.
B.Computer can think like a human brain.
C.Human brains work faster than computers.
14.What do we know about thought-chatter?
A.It can make us smarter.
B.Meditation can make it less.
C.It refers to the background noises we hear.
15.Which of the following can be the best title for this passage?
A.How to think actively.
B.Busy working human brains
C.Differences between human brains and computers.

Love Family, Be Helpful
Family should be the place of love, joy and laughter. And it’s everyone’s duty to do something for his or her family. I used to think I only needed to study hard, but later I learned to help my parents with housework.
Last Sunday, my parents were not at home. I decided to clean the house and cook dinner for them. First, I swept the floor and wiped the windows. Then I tried to cook some simple dishes. When my parents came back, they were surprised and happy. Though I was tired, I had a strong feeling of satisfaction.
Helping my family makes me feel proud and helpful. I will keep doing this to make our family warmer.

D
