① For a long time, people only read about talking plants in stories. But now, we know plants can really “talk” to each other in different ways.
② First, plants can use sounds to talk. We cannot hear these sounds, but their roots (根) can make these quiet sounds. They can also hear them. A plant can “listen” through its roots to know if the plant next to it is friendly or not.
③ Plants can also use smells. For example, if an insect eats a plant’s leaves, the plant makes an unusual smell. Other plants around it can “smell” this too. Then they also make their own smells. Some smells make insects go away, and some can call other insects to come and help the plant.
④ There is also something like a “Plant Internet (网络)” under the ground. It is made of very small living things (生物). It connects (连接) the roots of many plants together. Through this network, plants can share food and water. Big plants sometimes help small plants in this way.
⑤ Scientists are still learning new things about how plants talk. Maybe one day, we can even learn to understand them.
8. How do plants use sounds to talk?
A. They sing songs to each other.
B. Their roots make and hear quiet sounds.
C. Their leaves make loud sounds.
9. What can a plant do when an insect eats its leaves?
A. It makes an unusual smell to tell other plants.
B. It calls other insects to eat the plant next to it.
C. It stops sharing food and water with others.
10. What is the “Plant Internet” made of?
A. The roots of different plants.
B. Very small living things under the ground.
C. The unusual smells from plants.
11. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. How scientists study the “Plant Internet”.
B. Why plants need to help small plants around them.
C. Different ways that plants can “talk” to each other.
D
① I still remember my best friend from primary school. We sat together every day, shared our food, and played after class. We promised we would always be friends. Now, we are in different middle schools and hardly ever see each other. Sometimes I feel sad about this, but I have learned an important lesson: friendships can change, and that is a normal part of life.
② People change as they grow older. My friend once loved reading storybooks with me. Now, she enjoys playing basketball. I still like quiet activities like drawing. We have become different people. Sometimes friends move to another town. Sometimes they join different clubs and make new friends. Sometimes you just slowly become less close. It is not good or bad — it is just what happens.
③ Can we keep old friends even when things change? Yes, if we try. You can send a short message to ask how they are doing. You can share interesting things from your life. If the friendship is true, small changes shouldn’t break it. True friends care about each other even when they are different.
④ What if a friendship really ends? It is okay to feel a little sad. But remember, life always brings new people to you. After that old friendship died down, I joined an art class. There I met a girl with a love for painting. We became good friends. She shows me new ideas I never knew before.
⑤ Friends are like flowers in a garden. Some bloom (开花) for a short time, some last longer. Each friend makes your life more colorful. When one friend goes away, there will be new ones coming. Do not be afraid of change. Remember the good times, and keep your heart open for new friendships.
12. What did the writer and his primary school friend often do together?
A. They studied math together.
B. They played basketball every day.
C. They shared food and played after class.
13. What can we know from paragraph 3?
A. We can try to keep old friends by staying in touch often.
B. True friendships will break easily with small changes.
C. It is impossible (不可能的) to keep old friends when things change.
14. What does the underlined part “Friends are like flowers in a garden” mean mean in paragraph 5?
A. Friends need gifts and attention to stay close.
B. Friends are beautiful when they are exactly like you.
C. Friendships are short or long, and each brings color to life.
15. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. How to forget old friends completely (完全地).
B. More examples of meeting new friends.
C. The reasons why friendships never change.
