Scientists working at the Cambridge University Library have discovered a lost story from the Middle
Ages about King Arthur and Merlin.
In 2019,an old book that listed a wealthy family's property records caught the eye of Dr Irene
Fabry-Tehranchi.The book dates from the 1500s,but looked even older.The cover was parchment(
)and was folded around the book and sewn onto it.
By studying the cover,Fabry-Tehranchi learned that the writing was about King Arthur and Merlin.It
belonged to an Old French continuation that follows the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round
Table.The French story is known as Suite Vulgate du Merlin.There are only fewer than 40 manuscripts
(hand-written copies)of this story.The colors and the writing style helped the scientists figure out that the
book's cover was created between 1275 and 1315.
The old,delicate parchment had hidden most of the writing.The scientists tried to digitally
"unfold"it.They took high-quality photos of the parchment using light of different wavelengths.These
images revealed details unnoticed before.The scientists were now able to read the text on the parchment,
which-written in Old French-contains two stories about King Arthur.The text was still popular
centuries after the manuscript was made,but by the 1500s,British readers were mainly consuming
Arthurian stories in English,not French.Its owners,the Vanneck family of Suffolk,reused it as binding
()material.The Elizabethan bookbinders "saw it as a piece of rubbish,"says a chief photographic
technician."It'd never have crossed their minds what we'd do to it."
"This project was not just about unlocking one text-it was about developing a methodology that can
be used for other manuscripts,"Fabry-Tehranchi says."Libraries around the world face similar
challenges with delicate pieces enclosed in bindings,and our approach provides a model for accessing
and studying them even though some scientists say this is so risky and could damage the originals.

A mushroom can support its own weight while growing through concrete,yet you can easily slice one
for dinner.Scientists have wondered why.They researched mushrooms'microscopic fungal threads

Mushrooms are built from tiny thread-like structures called hyphae,which are long chains of fungal
cells.When millions of them work together,they create surprisingly strong structures.But not all
mushrooms organize these threads the same way.The research focused on two types of mushrooms that
represent completely different engineering approaches:white button mushrooms with randomly arranged
threads and maitake mushrooms with threads growing in preferred directions.
To see how these arrangements affect strength,researchers dried both types of mushrooms,examined
their inner structure with electron microscopes,and pressed them to test their force resistance.
When pressed in different directions,white button mushrooms showed virtually no difference.They
were equally squishy no matter which way you pushed them.Because the threads are pointing in all
directions randomly,it makes sense that the overall strength would be roughly the same regardless of how
you apply force.
At the microscopic level,maitake mushrooms'individual threads were harder than those of white
mushrooms.But the team thought strength differences depended not just on individual thread strength but
also on thread arrangements.To prove this,they built 3D computer models of mushroom-like structures,
testing virtual materials with threads pointing horizontally(水平),vertically(垂直)and at various
angles in between.As the thread arrangements changed from horizontal to vertical,the material's
strength increased by nearly 100%.The scientists could effectively double a material's strength just by
rearranging the same basic components.
Engineers could save much time and money in development by using this research to predict
material properties before physical testing."There's so much we can still learn from nature,"says
scientist Mir Jalil Razavi."We're just getting started with this kind of research."The humble mushroom
could serve as a blueprint for future sustainable materials.Modeling materials after fungi would be a
green solution that's also strong enough to be useful in engineering.
