Jeff was an old dog. When his owner died, the dog stayed near the house and waited for his owner to return. Some neighbours left food for Jeff because they thought this dog was kind and friendly.
One day, Jeff walked into a neighbour’s yard and began playing with 18-month-old Sawyer. The young mother didn’t like the dirty dog at first. But seeing her son having fun playing with Jeff, she decided to let him stay.
One afternoon, the boy’s mother left Sawyer in the yard to play while she answered the phone. When she returned, he was gone. The mother was scared and called the police. They looked for Sawyer for six hours.
Then, someone said he had heard barking coming from the woods. So they all rushed to the woods. Sawyer was asleep against a tree. Jeff was keeping Sawyer there while one of his own legs was in a deep hole.
In fact, Jeff had followed Sawyer when he walked away. Seeing him in danger, Jeff held him safely for all those hours.
Sawyer’s mother was so thankful that Jeff spent the rest of his days with them. She knew without the old dog, she would never see her only son.

①When autumn arrives in the United States and Canada, you can see one of nature’s greatest views—the yearly migration of the monarch butterflies (帝王蝶).
②No other butterfly in the world migrates like the orange and black monarchs of North America. They cannot live for long periods in cold weather. For this reason, each autumn around October, the butterflies from Canada travel up to 3,000 kilometres south to spend the winter in warmer places. Some even fly to the mountains of Mexico. There are so many of them that they almost block out the sky. You can even hear their wings beating.
③It usually takes the butterflies two months to reach the south of Mexico. After spending five months there, they head back north in spring. But not one butterfly finishes the whole round trip. They lay eggs along the way and die. Three generations (代) of butterflies will live and die during the spring journey alone. The fourth and final generation of the year is born in early autumn and will reach the north. But the butterflies hardly rest before starting the long journey south again to Mexico.
④The most amazing thing about these butterflies is that they return to the very same trees in Mexico that their great-great-grandparents used the winter before.
⑤However, the populations of this colourful butterfly have dropped in recent years. In 2015, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that nearly a billion monarchs have disappeared from the overwintering sites (越冬地点) since 1990, reported by The Washington Post. One of the main reasons, experts say, is that farmers have used herbicides (除草剂) on plants that the monarchs’ larvae (幼虫) live and feed on.
25. What does the underlined word “migration” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Birth. B. Change. C. Death. D. Travel.

D. They will stay in the north until they lay eggs in spring.
28. How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ...)

Cartoons are quite popular with children. They play an important role in their life. Why?
First of all, cartoons are funny. Most people do not want to be bored, especially children. Children always want to do something fun. They can’t focus on the things that are hard to do. But if they watch cartoons, all the children can almost watch them until the end.
Another reason is that children can learn many things from cartoons easily. Usually, children hate boring knowledge in books. But cartoons are different. They can make children learn a lot with fun. For example, the cartoon SpongeBob SquarePants tells children a lot about the sea.
The last reason is that cartoons are fantastical (虚构的). Sometimes, everybody wants to run away from the real world. They think that their dreams are coming true by watching cartoons. So many boys like watching Superman because they always imagine they can fly. Or they would like to be “Spider-Man” to save people in danger.
Cartoons are important to children. It will be better if there are more educational cartoons for children.

A. Birth. B. Change. C. Death. D. Travel.
26. Monarch butterflies fly from ______ to ______ each year.
A. America; Mexico B. Canada; Mexico
C. America; Canada D. Canada; America
27. What can we know about the monarch butterflies from Paragraph 3?
A. They will finish the whole round trip by themselves.
B. Their fourth and final generation will reach the north.
C. They will have to rest before heading back to the south.
D. They will stay in the north until they lay eggs in spring.
28. How is the text organized? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2, ...)

C. D.

【答案】例文
Dear Nathan,
I know you want to raise a dog as your pet. In fact, I also want to keep a dog as a pet, but you need to think carefully about it.
Dogs are great companions: they can guard the house, bring us joy, keep the elderly and kids from feeling lonely, and teach us to care for others. However, they may bark loudly at night and disturb neighbors. Worse still, some dogs might bite people or scare children .In my opinion, you can keep a small dog, but you must be a responsible owner.
I am looking forward to your good news.
Yours,
Li Hui
