Dressed in his pilot jumpsuit and hat,my little boy Jacob excitedly rushed ahead
towards the helicopter.Jacob, five, had always been fascinated with planes and helicopters.
So when I mentioned the upcoming RAF air show, his eyes lit up-I kept quiet about the
small surprise I'd planned with the event team.
As Jacob stood staring at a shiny Spitfire,a group of Red Arrows pilots walked over.
One nodded and they all saluted (him.Jacob froze for a second, and then awkwardly
lifted his small hand to his forehead. My wife Andrea took my arm and whispered,"He's
been dreaming of this moment."I suggested to Jacob,"How about raising some money for
the Red Arrows to thank them?”“That sounds fun,”he replied.
We decided to hike Pen-y-ghent,one of Yorkshire's highest peaks, and as we finally
made it to the top,we felt delighted. And to top it off,we'd raised 6,500 for the RAF
Benevolent Fund. After that, the amazing experiences just kept coming.
Months later,Andrea got diagnosed with cancer and left us forever within a year despite
the caring doctors'effort.Jacob and I drifted (through days like we were in fog.Until
one afternoon he pulled out the air show photo."Mom liked it when we helped people
right,"he said.We started fundraising for St Gemma's Hospice who did so much during
Andrea's treatment.We did obstacle courses,sold home-made cookies and held a
neighborhood car wash.Over two years,we got 11,000 but those weekends together let us
talk about Andrea without crying.
Now 11-year-old Jacob's love for planes has grown deeper. We met Johnny Johnson, the
last surviving Dam Buster, who told him,"You find something bigger than yourself to fight
for."Soon Jacob showed me a map of Germany's Dam Buster dams,"I'll cycle all of them to
raise 100,000 for the Fund before joining Air Cadets."Every training day he leads on his
bike,old hat on the handlebars.For Mom,for the pilots,he says.It's not just charity
anymore-it's how we hold onto Andrea and turn Jacob's passion into something real.

Why is it that,in some homes, you hardly step through the door before you're greeted
by a photo wall of smiling family faces, yet in others you find a dusty wedding picture in a
corner?37%of the 1,206 people we surveyed said they didn't display any photos around
their home.Of the 63%who did,the most common number was 6-19 photos on show.
So,are those who don't display pictures lacking in feelings?Thankfully no.It's
something you tend to copy your parents, says psychologist Professor Craig Jackson of
Birmingham City University. It's also usually a sign of how independent you are.
"Family-devoted people have pictures of their family around them because they're
important, but I suspect they are also a comfort, knowing they have that connection should
they need it.But in others that doesn't happen,"says Prof Jackson, who admits he has only
a couple of family photos up."If I need help moving a piano, for example,I look up piano
movers.I don't think of calling my brother or my cousin."
As for the popular subjects of photos, top came children.Partners were next, then
grandchildren, parents, holidays, and so on.People in their 40s and younger are more likely
to display photos of themselves. They are the experiential generations-they value themselves
on how many experiences they've ticked off,and they use photos and Instagram posts to show
it.In their opinion,if you didn't take a picture,it didn't happen.
Research shows that looking at photos can be therapeutic(治7的).“You're touching
base with memories-and there's something about holding a physical print that's more
powerful than looking at a digital device,"says Prof Jackson. However, some good news for
anti-printers:the same benefits can be gained by looking at digital pictures. It's more about
how you feel when you're looking at the photo-why you've taken it,why it makes you
happy. You can get that from a digital picture.
28.What can we learn from the survey?
A.About 40%have over 19 photos.
B.Fewer than half display home photos.
C.Most photo displayers have less than 20.
D.Home walls mainly show wedding photos.
29.Why does Prof Jackson give the example of moving a piano?
A.To explain daily tasks need no family support.
B.To argue family photos solve no practical problem.
C.To prove professional home services are more reliable
D.To show the independent need less family photo connection.
英语(五)第4页(共8页)
30.Why do people under 40 prefer displaying their own photos?
A.They follow their parents'photo habits.
B.They have fewer family photos to show.
C.They want to record and show life experiences.
D.They think their own photos are more attractive.
31.Which is the best title for the text?
A.What Do People Do with Photos at Home?
B.How to Build Family Ties Through Photos?
C.Why Are Children the Top Photo Subject?
D.How to Choose Between Physical and Digital Photos?
D
In the dark,near-freezing waters kilometers below the ocean surface-where pressure is
4O0 times that at sea level-一lie potato-sized polymetallic nodules(多金属结核).Rich in
cobalt, nickel, copper, and rare earth elements, these nodules take over a million years to
form 1.5 centimeters and sustain unique, delicate deep-sea life.
Yet deep-sea miners plan to use large machinery to get these nodules, supplying metals
for tech products like smartphones and EV batteries. As the industry pushes for mining
permits,serious concerns have arisen.
Mining is naturally destructive, and in the deep sea,it becomes disastrous.Heavy
equipment will rub against the seabed, destroying sea life and removing hard surfaces vital
for deep-sea lives, such as corals and sponges;seabed recovery could take centuries, even
millions of years.Mine-collecting equipment will agitate small substances at the bottom of the
sea, creating near-seabed dirt clouds that harm life hundreds to thousands of kilometers
away.Throwing mining waste in 800 -1,200-meter-deep waters will spread fine metals
across hundreds of thousands of cubic kilometers, impacting vertical-migrating(垂直洄游)
animals, critical to climate regulation, and species like tuna.
While we know deep-sea mining's impacts are barely controllable and unchangeable,
their full extent-such as destruction to carbon storage or nutrient cycles-remains too
unpredictable to be ignored.Miners lack reliable restoration plans, and monitoring
operations in extreme, remote waters are far harder than on land.
Fundamentally,we still haven't clarified if deep-sea mining is necessary, how to weigh
its risks and benefits,or if it agrees with global climate and sustainability goals.Given high
risks,uncertain benefits,and scientific unclearness,we should say "no"to it.Instead,we
need new ways of safer metal sourcing to reduce the need of deep-sea mining. This warning
and carefulness strengthens New Caledonia's 50-year mining ban,and has led more
countries, organizations, and scientists to call for a full ban on deep-sea mining in national
waters and the high seas.
32.Which is a feature of polymetallic nodules?
A.They lack rare earths.
B.They form rather slowly.
C.They harm deep-sea life.
D.They lie in shallow seas.
33.What is a major problem of deep-sea mining?
A.It only affects sea creatures nearby.
B.It damages deep-sea creatures'habitats.
C.It fails to supply metals for tech products.
D.It needs more monitoring than land mining.
34.What does the underlined word "agitate"in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Move around.B.Clear away.
C.Calm down.
D.Find out.
35.What is the author's view on deep-sea mining?
A.Mostly uncertain.B.Slightly positive.C.Fully supportive.
D.Firmly opposed.

项为多余选项。
International Day of Older Persons on 1 October celebrates the part that older people
play in our lives.36
What is a family history?
Your family history is the story of your relatives and what they've experienced in their
lives. This could include where they lived, traditions they followed and the jobs they had.
37 From them you understand where you come from.Have you ever wondered what your
granddad looked like when he was your age,or what your aunt's favorite hobby was?It can
surprise and inspire you to learn more.
How can it help you?
Discovering the ups and downs of your family story helps you overcome challenges,
according to psychologists Marshall Duke and Robyn Fivush.38 Maybe people in your
family survived a war, moved to a different country or started a business.Knowing about your
past helps you understand your identity. If your family comes from a different country,
hearing their stories gives you a stronger connection to that place.Finding out that your uncle
likes the same music as you,or your aunt loved the same subjects at school, can make
spending time with relatives more fun.
How to get started?
39 Being aware of how they are shared counts too.Sitting together for meal times is
a good chance to ask questions about your family's past. You could test each other with the
"do you know"questions recommended by Duke and Fivush.Look through photo albums
with grandparents to learn about older relatives and find a way to record these stories.40
All of this paints a picture of the past and helps you understand your place in it."The power
of family stories is really remarkable,"says Fivush.
A.It's like a treasure box with photos and stories.
B.It's not just knowing family stories that matters.
C.Everyone has his unique culture background in growth.
D.Whatever way keeps their memories safe for the future is okay.
E.It's a good opportunity to ask relatives about your family history.
F.That's when you should put aside your job and listen attentively to them.
G.Learning your relatives dealt with tough times can make you feel stronger too.

As autumn arrived, continuous rain had fallen for several straight days. The once warm
afternoons turned cold. Each morning, the rain tapped softly on rooftops and windows,
leaving the streets with wetness.Puddles (formed at every crosswalk, reflecting the
gray, overcast sky and the few yellow leaves that had started to fall from old trees. The air
carried a fresh, cool smell, reminding everyone that summer had truly ended.
Jack,a 17-year-old high school junior, and his classmate Finn had a fixed morning
routine. They met at 7:20 sharp outside Finn's apartment building, each carrying an
umbrella-Jack's was black with a small logo of his favorite soccer team, while Finn's was
bright green, easy to spot in the rain. They then walked the 10-minute route to school
together, chatting about their math homework, the upcoming school festival, and the new
movie they planned to watch on the weekend.
Around them, the street was always busy with people hurrying to work or school.Everyone
seemed focused on getting to their destinations quickly, barely noticing the world around them-
no one stopped to look at the puddles, the rain,or the small changes in the neighborhood.
On Thursday morning, the rain poured harder than ever. The sky was darker than
usual, and the rain came down in thick sheets. The streets were flooded, especially in the
old part of town where the drainage (system was outdated and couldn't handle the
heavy downpour.Water reached up to Jack's and Finn's ankles. As they walked through the
water,Finn suddenly stopped and pointed ahead."Look,"he said, his voice loud enough
to cut through the sound of rain.A manhole (cover had been washed away by the
strong current, leaving a dark, gaping hole in the middle of the road. The rushing water
flowed into the hole, making it hard to see clearly-any passer-by in a hurry could easily
step into it and get hurt.
