In China, most middle school students sleep less than nine hours every night because they have much homework to do. Some homework is given by their teachers, and some by their par-ents. Also, some students don't know how to save time. They are not careful enough when they do their homework, so it takes them a lot of time. Some students spend too much time watchingTV or playing computer games. They stay up very late. Some students have to get up early every morning on weekdays to get to school on time by bus or by bike. It can be a long way from home to school.
Schools and parents should cut down some of the homework so that children can enjoy nine hours of sleep every night. For children, they should make the best use of their time. When they have enough time for sleeping, they will find it much better for both their study and health.

“Oh, that's too dangerous. Get down from there!” shouts Mum to her son as he climbs up the highest point of the climbing frame.“I'm the modern king of the country!” he shouts back, without a care in the world. There is no real danger—— the playground is soft and safe.
“How will he learn to deal with danger if you wrap(包裹) him in cotton wool all the time?” someone asks.
It's a modern problem. In the past, children had to grow up much earlier and often faced danger at home and at work. In England, children were made to climb chimneys(烟囱) to clean them or to work in many other dangerous places. They walked to school alone, played outside for hours by themselves, and nobody ever worried.
However, modern parents see danger in everything, and are often accused of(被指责) turn-ing their children into“cotton wool” kids—— so overprotected that children never get the chance to explore or learn through play and adventure.
Experts say that modern children are becoming too soft, and that parents must give young people freedom to play. They must learn to solve their own arguments and see danger for them-selves.
So, if you think you' re in danger of becoming a“cotton wool kid”, ask your parents for a lit-tle more freedom. When you' ve shown you can look after yourself well, maybe they' ll“unwrap”you for the real world!
23. What does the underlined phrase“without a care in the world” mean?
A. Having no worries at all. B. Feeling very worried.
C. Being afraid of danger. D. Caring too much about others.
24. Who might be a cotton wool kid?
A. Tom often climbs trees and rides his bike to school alone.
B. Jack likes to explore the woods near his home with his friends.
C. Emma helps her dad cook dinner and takes the bus by herself.
D. Lily never plays outside alone and her mum does everything for her.
25. What does the writer think of modern parents?
A. He thinks they are too worried and protective.
B. He believes they should keep children at home.
C. He suggests they send children to work earlier.
D. He fully supports their way of protecting children.
26. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To describe how children played in the past.
B. To tell parents to protect their children carefully.
C. To encourage kids to learn to take care of themselves.
D. To compare different parenting styles around the world.

①Have you ever walked around with your hands in your pockets just to look“cool”? Have you ever imagined being“the chosen one”—— someone with a secret task, hidden pain, or wisdom beyond one's age? If so, you are not a-lone!

②Looking back on my middle school days,I still remember how silly I was. I wanted people to notice me, but I also acted like I didn't care. I walked around in my oversized shirt and baggy jeans because I thought they made me look cooler. I also avoided anything“mainstream” just to show I had“better” taste. For example, if everyone liked a song,I'd say,“Am I the only one who thinks it is overrated(被高估的)?” And every time I shot a three-pointer,I imagined being anNBA basketball player.
③There are special names for this kind of teen behaviour. In psychology(心理学), it is called“adolescent ego-centrism(青春期自我主义).” Many teenagers around 13 or 14 start to believe that being“normal” is too boring. They want to be different from everyone else. What's more, they believe that they are the centre of attention, and they often become very nervous about how they appear in front of others.
④Yes,I find my 14-year-old self funny. But as a father now,I also understand how scary it can be to become a teenager. You are no longer a kid, but not an adult, either. You feel unsure but you also want to appear confident. While your behaviour can seem silly, it is just a natural part of growing up——a time when you explore who you are and who you want to be.
⑤So, next time you look back and feel a bit silly about your past behaviour, don't be too hard on yourself. There is nothing wrong with you! It is just part of growing up. After all, who says you can't let your imagination run wild once in a while?
27. How does the writer begin the passage?
A. By asking questions. B. By presenting a conversation.
C. By giving a famous saying. D. By listing some facts and opinions.
28. What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The difference between teenagers and adults.
B. The names and signs of a common teenager behavior.
C. The ways of helping teenagers become more confident.
D. The reasons why teenagers become nervous before exams.
29. How does the writer feel about his 14-year-old self now?
A. He still feels proud of it.
B. He feels sorry for what he did.
C. He believes it was a waste of time.
D. He thinks it was funny but understandable.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Growing Pains to Growing Gains B. Why Being Normal Is Boring
C. The Science of Teenage Ego D. How to Be Popular in Middle School

"Oh,that's too dangerous.Get down from there!"shouts Mum to her son as he climbs up
the highest point of the climbing frame."I'm the modern king of the country!"he shouts back,
without a care in the world. There is no real danger-the playground is soft and safe.
“How will he learn to deal with danger if you wrap(包裹)him in cotton
wool all the time?"someone asks.
It's a modern problem. In the past, children had to grow up much earlier
and often faced danger at home and at work.In England, children were made to
climb chimneys()to clean them or to work in many other dangerous places. They walked to
school alone, played outside for hours by themselves, and nobody ever worried.
However, modern parents see danger in everything, and are often accused of (turn-
ing their children into"cotton wool"kids-so overprotected that children never get the chance to
explore or learn through play and adventure.
Experts say that modern children are becoming too soft, and that parents must give young
people freedom to play. They must learn to solve their own arguments and see danger for them-
selves.
So,if you think you're in danger of becoming a "cotton wool kid",ask your parents for a lit-
tle more freedom. When you've shown you can look after yourself well, maybe they'll "unwrap"
you for the real world!
23.What does the underlined phrase "without a care in the world"mean?
A.Having no worries at all.
B.Feeling very worried.
C.Being afraid of danger.
D.Caring too much about others.
24.Who might be a cotton wool kid?
A.Tom often climbs trees and rides his bike to school alone.
B.Jack likes to explore the woods near his home with his friends
C.Emma helps her dad cook dinner and takes the bus by herself.
D.Lily never plays outside alone and her mum does everything for her.
25.What does the writer think of modern parents?
A.He thinks they are too worried and protective.
B.He believes they should keep children at home.
C.He suggests they send children to work earlier.
D.He fully supports their way of protecting children.
26.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To describe how children played in the past.
B.To tell parents to protect their children carefully.
C.To encourage kids to learn to take care of themselves.
D.To compare different parenting styles around the world.

2Looking back on my middle school days,I still remember how silly I was.I wanted people
to notice me,but I also acted like I didn't care.I walked around in my oversized shirt and baggy
jeans because I thought they made me look cooler.I also avoided anything "mainstream"just to
show I had "better"taste.For example,if everyone liked a song,I'd say,"Am I the only one who
thinks it is overrated(被高估的)?”And every time I shot a three-pointer,I imagined being an
NBA basketball player.
③There are special names for this kind of teen behaviour. In psychology(心理学),itis
called“adolescent ego-centrism(青春期自我主义).”Many teenagers around 13orl4 start to
believe that being "normal"is too boring. They want to be different from everyone else. What's
more, they believe that they are the centre of attention, and they often become very nervous about
how they appear in front of others.
4Yes,I find my 14-year-old self funny. But as a father now,I also understand how scary it
can be to become a teenager. You are no longer a kid,but not an adult, either. You feel unsure but
you also want to appear confident. While your behaviour can seem silly,it is just a natural part of
growing up-a time when you explore who you are and who you want to be.
5So,next time you look back and feel a bit silly about your past behaviour, don't be too
hard on yourself. There is nothing wrong with you!It is just part of growing up.After all,who
says you can't let your imagination run wild once in a while?

Good afternoon,everyone!
Life is always full of ups and downs. As teenagers,we should be strong enough to face
different kinds of challenges. Here I'd like to tell you what makes me strong.First, taking
care of my body helps me stay strong.I do sports every day, like running or playing basket-
ball.I also go on family outings on weekends, which makes me feel happy and healthy.Sec-
ond,I have good hobbies. For example,I join a basketball club to avoid using my phone too
much. This keeps me active and focused. Finally,a strong mind is important.I always try to
stay positive when things go wrong.I also share my problems with my parents or friends.
Their support gives me courage.With a healthy body,good habits,and a positive mind,I can
face any difficulty bravely.
Let's become strong together!
