However, in his second college year, he occasionally felt a slight pain in his right leg. Worse, he couldn’t stand at last. But the doctor couldn’t do anything to help him. He had to leave school, and lived a terrible life.
One day some villagers came to ask whether he would help children with their study. At the time, Ye heard there were a number of left-behind children in his village. He decided to open a free class in the summer of 1999. The students came after school and during summer and winter vacations.
All the desks were around his bed. When Ye taught them, he had to lie on his side. He would feel very uncomfortable over time, but he continued for over twenty years. So far, many of his students have gone to college.

Traditional villages are an important part of Chinese culture. They carry the history and customs (风俗) of ancient China. However, in the past few years, many traditional villages have been in danger of disappearing. Young people left for cities, old houses fell into disrepair, and traditional skills were forgotten.
To protect traditional villages, the Chinese government has taken many steps since 2012. Over 6,000 villages have been listed as “Traditional Chinese Villages”. The government provides money to repair old houses and protect cultural relics (文物). Local governments also organize activities to pass on traditional skills, such as paper-cutting and Chinese clay.
Many young people have returned to their hometowns to join in the protection work since 2015. They use new ways to introduce traditional villages, such as live-streaming (直播) village life on the Internet. Tourists are attracted by the ancient buildings, beautiful scenery and unique customs. Ecotourism (生态旅游) has become a new way to help villages develop without damaging the environment.
Now, traditional villages are coming back to life. Old houses are restored (修复), traditional skills are developing, and villagers are living a better life in 2025. One day while our cab was waiting outside a park, a dirty old cab drove up beside us. The horse was an old chestnut. Suddenly she looked at me and said, “Black Beauty, is that you?”
It was Ginger! But how different she was! She was thin, and tired from too much hard work. She looked unhappy and she had a bad cough. She told me her sad story.
She had a year’s rest and then a gentleman bought her. For a while she got on very well. Then one day after a long running her old problem returned, and her back hurt again. They bought and sold her several times after that.
“Then at last,” she said, “a man who has a lot of cabs and horses bought me. I work hard, all week, with no rest on Sundays. I wish I was dead.”
I was very sad to hear this. I put my nose to Ginger’s, but I didn’t know what to say to her. She said, “Black Beauty, you are my old friend.”
Just then her driver came back and they drove off. I felt sad indeed to see Ginger like this.
A short time after this I saw a cart with a dead horse in it. It was a chestnut horse with a long, thin neck. I think it was Ginger. I hope so, for then all her problems were over.
