Passage 2
(2026·江苏无锡·一模)阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过10个单词。
In China, red lanterns have long been a familiar sight. On cold winter nights long ago, they helped travellers find their way safely through dark streets. They could be seen outside a palace or in front of houses, bringing light and good wishes. Today, red lanterns are closely connected with Chinese New Year celebrations across the country and remind people of traditions passed down from their ancestors (祖先).
To imagine how many lanterns would be hung here, at any given time, is like trying to count how many trees would be in the Amazon (亚马逊地区). And yet it is said that as many as 80% of the country’s lanterns are still made-by hand-in one small town in Hebei Province.
When you walk along the streets of Tuntou, you can see lantern making almost everywhere. Along the main street, red lanterns are piled high in shops and homes.
No one knows exactly when the craft (手艺) started in this part of northern China but, if you’re born in Tuntou, you will learn how to make lanterns at a very young age. “When you see others in your family doing it every day, you get the hang of it quickly,” one woman told the reporter, adding that “Kids here can pick it up at around 10.”
In today’s world of modern factories and machines, it is surprising that this small town still plays an important role in the lantern market. Local makers can produce many kinds of lanterns and can complete even small orders quickly and at a low price.

No matter how the guochao trend develops, there’s one thing that won’t change: “Behind the craze is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture,” said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. In different cultures, horses stand for similar things, but with occasional (偶尔的) exceptions.
In China, the horse carries many positive meanings, such as smart and energetic, and we can see them in Chinese idioms. For example, a talented person is often called “qianlima”, a horse that covers a thousand li a day. And someone who is good at finding talent is referred to as “bole”, a person who could tell a good horse by its looks in ancient China. Other horse-related phrases in Chinese include “madaochenggong”, which means instant success and “longmajingshen”, which means full of energy.

(2026·江苏宿迁·一模)请认真阅读下面短文,根据短文内容用英语回答3个题目。
What do you see when you look at abstract (抽象的) art? Can you understand it? Does it look like anything?
Abstract art became popular in the early 20th century. Artists did not want to paint, draw, or sculpt things exactly like they looked. They didn’t want their art to be realistic (现实的). They were more interested in basic shapes and colours.
Picasso is probably the most famous of these artists. He painted and drew in many, many styles. Sometimes he used a lot of blue colours (his “blue period”). Later, he used more red and pink colours (his “rose period”). Many of his other paintings are called “cubist (立体派的)” because they are made of painted squares.
After a long time, Picasso’s paintings became more and more abstract. He painted people and things using strange shapes. His work was so strange that many of his workmates didn’t understand it.
Kandinsky, another famous artist, used lines, shapes and patterns to paint his subjects. His paintings also used strong colours to express feelings. Other artists, like the surrealists (超现实主义者), were interested in sub-consciousness (潜意识). Painters like Breton and Magritte used many symbols in their work. The meaning or subject of their work wasn’t always clear. Dali, another surrealist artist, painted pictures that looked like dreams.
There are still many abstract artists around the world. That’s the way many artists prefer. They want each person to look at art and find their own meaning in it.

2.How did Kandinsky express feelings?

Now, Pang has written many important science papers and got patents (专利) for his inventions. His dream is to “serve the country through scientific research” and he works hard for his goal. His story lights the way for many people.

After years of training and effort, China made history again—this time on the snooker (斯诺克桌球) stage. On May 6th, 2025, Zhao Xintong, a 28-year-old Chinese player, has become the first Asian to win the World Snooker Championship. It was a moment that made all the Chinese cheer and feel so proud.
The final match was like a big showdown (决战). Zhao Xintong had to play against Mark Williams, a well-known and experienced player. As a beginner, instead of feeling nervous or scared, Zhao thought it a chance to prove himself. Passage 1
(2026·江苏南通·一模)The aim of education or culture is merely the development of good taste in knowledge and good form in conduct. The cultured man or the ideal educated man is not necessarily one who is well-read or learned, but one who likes and dislikes the right things. To know what to love and what to hate is to have taste in knowledge.
Nothing is more annoying than to meet a person at a party whose mind is crammed full with historical dates and figures and who is extremely well-posted on current international affairs, but whose attitudes or points of view are all wrong. I have met such people. They do have great academic knowledge, but no good judgment or taste. Being knowledgeable is a mere matter of the cramming of facts or information while having good taste is a matter of artistic judgment. In speaking of a scholar, the Chinese generally distinguish between their scholarship, conduct and taste.
An educated man, therefore, is one who has the right loves and hatreds. This we call taste, and with taste comes charm. Now, to have taste requires a capacity for thinking things through to the bottom, the independence of judgment, and the unwillingness to be affected by any form of power. When a man is wrong, he is wrong, and there is no need for one to be impressed by a great name or by the number of books that he has read and we haven’t.
Taste, then, is closely associated with courage, as the Chinese always associated *dan* (“胆”) with *shi* (“识”). And courage or independence of judgment, as we know, is such a rare virtue among humankind. We see this intellectual courage or independence during the childhood of all thinkers and writers who in later life amount to anything. Such a person refuses to be impressed by a philosophic vogue or a fashionable theory, even though it is backed by the greatest name. This is taste in knowledge. No doubt such intellectual courage or independence of judgment requires a certain childish, naive confidence in oneself, but this self is the only thing that one can cling to, and the moment a student gives up his right of personal judgment, he is in for accepting all the dishonest and insincere of life.
1.What does the author say the aim of education or culture is?
2.What kind of person does the author find annoying at a party?
3.According to the author, what is the difference between being knowledgeable and having taste?
4.What qualities does the author say taste requires?
5.Why does the author associate taste with courage?
【答案】1.The aim of education or culture is merely the development of good taste in knowledge and good form in conduct. 2.Whose mind is crammed full with historical dates and figures and who is extremely well-posted on current affairs, but whose attitudes or points of view are all wrong. 3.Being knowledgeable means cramming facts or information, while having taste involves artistic judgment and knowing what to love and hate. 4.Taste requires a capacity for thinking things through to the bottom, the independence of judgment, and the unwillingness to be affected by any form of power. 5.Because courage or independence of judgment is a rare virtue that allows one to refuse to be impressed by philosophic vogue or great names.
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。作者论述了教育与文化的真正目的在于培养知识上的“鉴赏力”和行为上的“良好表现”,强调了独立判断力、勇气以及不盲从权威在个人成长中的重要性。
1.第一段首句明确给出了答案:“The aim of education or culture is merely the development of good taste in knowledge and good form in conduct.”。这直接定义了作者眼中教育与文化的核心目标。答案是原文直接信息,直接提取。
2.第二段第一句提到:“Nothing is more annoying than to meet a person…whose mind is crammed full with historical dates and figures…but whose attitudes or points of view are all wrong.”。其中“annoying”意为“恼人的”;“crammed full with”意为“塞满了”。这说明作者反感那种只有机械记忆而缺乏正确见解的人。答案是对原文信息的提取。
3.第二段第四句明确对比了二者的区别:“Being knowledgeable is a mere matter of the cramming of facts…while having good taste is a matter of artistic judgment.”。这直接指出了知识积累与艺术判断力(品味)之间的本质差异。
4.第三段第二句列举了鉴赏力所需的品质:“…to have taste requires a capacity for thinking things through to the bottom, the independence of judgment, and the unwillingness to be affected by any form of power.”。答案是原文信息的完整提取。
5.第四段提到:“Taste, then, is closely associated with courage…courage or independence of judgment…is such a rare virtue…”。文中进一步解释这种勇气能让人“refuses to be impressed by a philosophic vogue or a fashionable theory, even though it is backed by the greatest name”。这说明品味之所以与勇气相关,是因为独立判断需要抵制潮流和权威的罕见美德。

The CCTV Spring Festival Gala is the most-watched TV program in China, bringing happiness to every family during the Spring Festival. In recent years, a new kind of star has appeared on this grand stage—robots. They have become a big highlight of the show.
These robots are not common machines. They are carefully made to perform traditional Chinese art, mixing old culture and new technology. Some robots dance yangge, a lively traditional folk dance, together with real dancers. They move in perfect order and never make mistakes. Other robots show amazing Chinese kung fu. They can jump high, turn over in the air and play with props. Their movements are clear, powerful and full of energy.
How can they perform so well? High-level technology is the key. AI helps them remember thousands of complex movements. Smart cameras and sensors make sure they can work safely with human performers. Although they are robots, they act almost like real artists.

In Tongren city, Guizhou Province, there is a special embroidery called leaf-vein embroidery (叶脉刺绣). This type of embroidery began in the Song Dynasty. It was used for communication among different ethnic groups in southwestern China.
Making leaf-vein embroidery is not easy. It takes a lot of steps, including choosing the right leaves, drying them, creating the designs and embroidering. Yang Li, a master of this craft, mentioned that in the last ten years, only about 20 people could complete the whole process by themselves.Because of the long, hard work, passing on the traditional craft faces challenges. “I have introduced this art to universities, communities and villages, but very few people have continued to do it,” Yang said. “I feel a duty. In my lifetime, I must pass on leaf-vein embroidery.” she said.
In 2022, Yang set up the Guizhou embroidery intangible cultural heritage base (黔绣非物质文化遗产基地) and started to share traditional skills of leaf-vein embroidery by making short videos online. “Leaf-vein embroidery is a treasure.
In the future, modern production may find a way to match what this village can do by hand. However, for now, this is China’s lantern town, and its people are proud that it is known this way.
1.What did red lanterns in front of houses bring long ago?
2.Where can you see lantern making almost everywhere?
3.When do kids there start to learn lantern making?
4.How do local makers help the town play an important role in the lantern market?
5.What do you think has helped keep this craft alive in the town?

Passage 1
(2026·江苏无锡·一模)阅读下面的短文,然后根据短文内容回答问题,每小题答案不超过8个单词。
The earliest forms of Chinese raincoats were made of straw and they were called “straw rain capes”. Now, few people wear straw rain capes anymore. But in the past, they were popular, especially among farmers and fishermen.
The straw rain capes were described in lots of poems and articles in different periods. They were everywhere in the countryside of China in the 1970s. But as society develops, it is slowly losing its place. Later, other materials were found to be more suitable for making rain capes.
Fan Licai, a woman in Zhuliangzhuang Village, Lianyungang City of Jiangsu Province, has a special love for straw rain capes. It is said that she is the only one still making straw rain capes for a living in Ganyu District. The woman learned the skill when she was 12. When she was young, she could make two capes in three days, and make a living for her family. Now her children ask her not to make capes anymore. They think she should enjoy her time. However, she still continues to make straw rain capes to keep this traditional skill alive.

If you look around your city, you might see girls wearing Hanfu in subways or people wearing T-shirts with Chinese characters on the streets. A new trend is taking hold in China — guochao.
According to a recently published report, searches related to guochao on a lifestyle information platform have risen by 170 percent from the same period last year, and reviews have risen by nearly 40 percent. Guochao is rising, but what is it?
The term describes the growth of China’s local fashion trends. It has widened the idea of “Made in China”, which has been known as the representation of Chinese culture and beauty contained in home-grown Chinese brands, according to CGTN.
For example, White Rabbit, whose sweet candy brings back childhood memories for many, introduced its perfume (香水) and lip balm. “We want White Rabbit to be a brand that young people want to share,” Shen Qinfeng, the company’s marketing manager said.
Now, guochao is “moving to the next stage, where its success will depend on gaining cultural confidence rather than Western validation”, according to the founder of a brand strategy consultancy.
No matter how the guochao trend develops, there’s one thing that won’t change: “Behind the craze is people’s positive attitude toward the country’s development and their recognition of and growing confidence in national culture,” said Yao Linqing, a professor in the School of Economics and Management at Communication University of China.
1.Where might you see girls wearing Hanfu?
2.What does the term “guochao” describe?
3.How does White Rabbit attract young people’s attention?
4.How many people express their opinions about the new trend?
5.Which do you prefer, China’s native brands or foreign brands? Why?

The year 2026 is the Year of the Horse in the Chinese calendar. In different cultures, horses stand for similar things, but with occasional (偶尔的) exceptions.
In China, the horse carries many positive meanings, such as smart and energetic, and we can see them in Chinese idioms. For example, a talented person is often called “qianlima”, a horse that covers a thousand li a day. And someone who is good at finding talent is referred to as “bole”, a person who could tell a good horse by its looks in ancient China.
1.Why didn’t Picasso’s workmates understand his work?
2.How did Kandinsky express feelings?
3.Do you like Picasso’s paintings? Why or why not?
