Teaching and learning procedure:
Step 1 Leading in and introduction (Opening Page)
Activity 1 Leading-in and introduction
1. Lead in the topic of this unit and talk about the title of this unit, the picture and the saying on the opening page by answering the following questions.
1) What does Iconic Attractions mean?
(标志性风物)
2) What does this photo show us?
The Sydney Opera House in Australia.
3) What are your impressions of the Sydney Opera House?
The building looks quite beautiful, rising up next to the water like sails on a ship.
4) Do you know of any other iconic attractions in the world?
Perhaps one of the most iconic attractions is the Great Wall in China. The Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Taj Mahal in India are others.
5) What does the saying “Whatever makes an impression on the heart seems lovely in the eyes” mean in English and Chinese?
English meaning: If a place or a thing makes a good impression on us, we think it is beautiful.
Chinese meaning: 任何给人留下深刻印象的东西在眼睛里都是可爱的。——萨阿迪
2. Introduce the learning objectives of this unit and this period.
Step 2 Pre-reading
Activity 2 Pre-reading
1. Warm up. Discuss the questions and share the answers.
1) What is the first thing you think of when you think about Australia?
The first things that I think of are kangaroos, beaches, and deserts.
2) If you have been to Australia, would you like to share your impression of Australia based on your experience? If you have never been to Australia, can you share your impression of Australia based on what you have seen in the media?
My impression is that it is a very dry place that is subject to wildfires. At the same time, it is the smallest continent but a very big country.
Step 3 While-reading
Activity 3 Reading comprehension of the text
1. Skim the text. Identify the type of text and predict the main idea of the text. Match the blog entries to the subheadings, and write the blog entry numbers in the blanks. And then summarize the main idea of the text.
1) Identify the type of the text: a blog with four entries.
2) Predict what the writer mainly wrote about in the blog: his/her experiences while travelling in Australia.
3) Match the blog entries to the subheadings.
1—Preparing to travel 2—First impressions
3—Aborigines and the didgeridoo 4—Reflections on multiculturalism
4) Summarize the main idea of the text: The writer wrote about her experiences and what she learned about Australian people and their culture, food and way of life.
2. Learn about how to take notes while reading.
Take notes. When you read a passage, sometimes it helps to take notes so that you can better remember and understand what you have learned. When you take notes, it is good to write down the important facts just using key words and ignore many of the small words. You can also use abbreviations, such as “Aus” for “Australia” and “N” for “north”, and use symbols such as “&” for “and”.
3. Read the text again and take notes. Then use your notes to answer the following questions.
1) What does “down under” mean?
Australia.
2) How has Australian cuisine been influenced by different cultures? Give two examples.
A lot of typical Australian food, such as the Sunday roast, is originally British. The influence of Asian cultures, on the other hand, led to the introduction of bean curd and Asian herbs, along with Australian versions of foods like the Chinese-inspired dim sim.
3) What is the main theme reflected in Aboriginal music and why?
It celebrates the natural world and the spiritual world around them, because to survive in the vast land, the Aborigines had to be in close contact with nature.
4) What are the writer’s first and biggest impressions of Australia? Why?
Her first impressions of Australia have been all about food, because her friend shared many different but yummy meals with her. Her biggest impression is the complicated mix of peoples and cultures that make up the nation. She feels this perhaps because of the many different kinds of people she met.
3. Complete the reading comprehension exercises in the reference book to understand the text better.
Step 4 Post-reading
Activity 4 Thinking and discussion
Discuss the questions in pairs and share the answers.
1. What’s the writing purpose of the travel blog?
To show the social aspects of Australia from the eyes of a social major.
2. How does the writer organise the four blog entries?
The writer organises the four blog entries by focusing on the theme of the text—experiencing the iconic features of Australia
3. What contributes to the uniqueness of Australia?
From the aspects of natural environment and culture, the natural geography, the isolation from other continents, history and immigration all contribute to the uniqueness of Australia.
4. What iconic Chinese attractions would you like to introduce to a foreigner? And explain why.
Tips:
Content: tourist sites, food and drinks, ethnic minority groups, musical instruments, clothes…
Structure: title, key sentence, perspective/reasons, examples, conclusion.
A Sample:
Tourist sites: The Temple of Heaven and the Forbidden City, because these are iconic places that tell a lot about the Chinese culture.
Food and drinks: Jiaozi, because it is the most representative food for many Chinese people, especially in the north. Tea, as an old Chinese saying goes, “Firewood, rice, cooking oil, salt, sauce, vinegar, and tea are the seven necessities to begin a day.”
Ethnic minority groups: The Miao people love singing their life aloud; the Dong people live with their traditional wind and rain bridges that give people shelter when it rains. I really enjoyed staying among them and learning about their culture.
Musical instruments: The pipa is one of the most popular Chinese instruments with over two thousand years of history. It can make very beautiful music and it has enlightenment on similar instruments in Japan and Korea.
Clothes: The qipao, because it is such a beautiful dress, and so representative of the Chinese culture as a whole.
