Teaching and learning difficult points: 1) Learning about the rhetorical devices used in the reading text The Amazing Animals of Australia; 2) Practicing writing a passage to write a description of an iconic animal in China, using some of the rhetorical devices to arouse readers’ interest; 3) Evaluating each other’s writing. Teaching and learning procedure: Step 1 Revision and Leading in Activity 1 Revision and Leading in 1. Review the main content of the text and language items learned in the previous period. 2. Introduce the learning objectives of the period. Step 2 Learning about the rhetorical devices Activity 2 Learning about the rhetorical devices used in the reading text 1. How does the writer describe these animals? By using some rhetorical devices to make the description more vivid. 2. What are some of the rhetorical devices? Simile(明喻), metaphor(暗喻), metonymy(借喻), allusion(引喻), personification(拟人), hyperbole(夸张), euphemism(委婉语), irony(反语), pun(双关), rhetorical question(反问), repetition (重复), alliteration (头韵). 3. Find at least three rhetorical devices the writer uses to arouse the readers’ interest. This expresses the strength and resolve of the Australians as individuals and as a nation. (metaphor暗喻) They are about the size of small dogs and look like rather large black rats. (Simile明喻) The noise they make could wake the dead. (hyperbole夸张) While it may lay eggs in a nest like a bird, it’s really a primitive mammal, with a unique biology. (Simile明喻) Step 3 Writing guidance Activity 3 Writing guidance 1. Present the writing requirements: Write a description of an iconic animal in China. 2. Brainstorm a list of iconic animals in China. Do some research and make notes. For example, giant panda, golden monkey, Tibetan antelope. For example: where they live/ what they eat/ what they look like /how they are different from other animals /how they interact with people/any other unusual or interesting facts about them/… Take pandas as an example: Habitat: in Sichuan/ food: bamboo/ appearance: black and white; cute/ difference from others: mainly live on bamboo; a very low birth rate …/ interaction with people: …/ other unusual or interesting facts: … 3. Talk about the organization of such kind of writing and useful expressions. Organization: Part 1 Leading in the topic and brief introduction. Part 2 Detailed description of their appearance, habitats, living habits and characteristics. Part 3 Mentioning what makes them unique to China. Useful expressions: Leading in the topic: ... is one of iconic animals in China. As we all know, ... only exists / lives in China. When it comes to China’s symbolic animals, ... ranks the first. When talking about iconic animals in China, the first thing that comes to my mind is ... Description of appearance, habitats, living habits and characteristics: It looks like ... ... is coated with ... and it is the size of ... ... is the typical characteristic of ... ... is so cute / funny / lovely / adorable ... that ... It is twice bigger than ... / It is twice as big as ... ... lives in ... and mainly depends / feeds on ... They spend ... time (in) ... ... likes wet and warm places, because ... The truth is that they are ... than they look. They can be found in ..., where they have easy access to ... Apart from ..., ... is even more eye-catching when doing ... ... is an endangered animal in China, where it used to have a wide distribution. Uniqueness: It is ... that makes ... unique. Compared with ..., ... does have ... In China, it represents good fortune. It is different from others in many aspects, such as ... The history of ... is a dramatic species-survival story. The unique / most attractive / special thing about ... is that ... Serving as a peace ambassador, ... have been sent to other countries as gifts. 4. Think of some rhetorical devices to use in the writing. Then, make an outline. The following questions may help you. 1) What is the key sentence for this expository writing? 2) How to make it attractive, such as asking a question, giving an interesting fact about this animal? 3) What is the logical order of each aspect? 4) How to make the ending more attractive? 5. Read the sample writing for reference. Sample writing: The most iconic animal of China by far is the panda. In fact, many people would say that the panda is a symbol of China. These cuddly creatures with their black and white markings almost look more like stuffed toys than real animals. Nearly everyone sees pandas as cute. This feeling is enhanced by the way the animals clumsily move about, which is sometimes humorous and cartoon-like. However, pandas are not toys – they are in fact live animals. They live mostly in remote nature reserves in Sichuan, China. Most people don’t realise that pandas – like all bears – are technically carnivores, and long ago perhaps they mostly ate meat. However, while pandas today can and do eat almost anything, their preferred food in their wild forest habitat is bamboo. As this food does not give them much nutrition, they have to eat almost constantly, and unlike most bears they do not hibernate in the winter. Pandas are generally quite shy and are seldom seen by people in the wild. Despite this, they have been known to attack people. While this is a very rare occurrence, it is a useful reminder that pandas are not cuddly toys but are wild animals and should not be approached in the wild. Until recently, pandas were considered endangered. However, with successful breeding and conservation programmes, their numbers have increased, and they are no longer on the endangered species list. Having said that, they are still considered vulnerable, and so more work is needed to protect this magnificent animal. Step 4 Writing practice Activity 4 Writing practice Practice writing the first draft in class, using your notes to write a description of one of these animals. Remember to use some rhetorical devices to make your writing vivid and interesting. Step 5 Writing evaluation Activity 5 Writing evaluation 1. Exchange drafts with a partner and revise each other’s draft. And then revise it using your partner’s comments. 2. Choose a few (2-3) students to read their writing to the class or present their writing and give feedback. Step 6 Summary and evaluation Activity 6 Summary Summarize the main contents of this period briefly by emphasizing how to write a vivid description of an iconic animal in China. Activity 7 Self-evaluation Guide the students to reflect on their learning of this period by considering the following aspects. 1. How is your writing performance? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 2. How is your writing evaluation? (Good/Fairly good/Moderate/Just so so/Poor) 3. What will you do to improve your writing after class? Homework: 1. Revise the writing. 2. Complete the vocabulary and grammar exercises in Assessing Your Progress. 3. Complete some more exercises in the reference book. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
