When we think of forests, we usually imagine trees standing still on dry land. But have you ever seen a forest that “walks”? In the coastal areas of Fujian and other southern provinces, there is a special kind of forest called the mangrove (红树林). These trees seem to “walk” across the mud over time.
Mangroves are wonders of nature because they can live in salt water, where most other trees would die. Their most amazing feature is their root system. Instead of growing straight down, many mangrove roots grow up and out of the water, looking like legs or stilts (高跷). These “legs” help the tree breathe air even when the tide (潮汐) covers the ground. They also hold the tree firmly against strong waves and winds.
How do they “walk”? As a mangrove tree grows older, its old roots may die and rot (腐烂) away. At the same time, new roots grow in the direction of the sea or along the coast. Over many years, this process makes the tree appear to move slowly from its original spot. In fact, the position of a single tree can shift (移动) several meters over a century!
Besides being amazing, mangroves are very useful. They act as a natural wall protecting villages from typhoons and storms. Their dense roots provide a safe home for fish, crabs, and birds. Many baby fish hide among the roots to avoid larger enemies.
However, these wonderful forests are in danger. Pollution and human activities have reduced their numbers. Luckily, Fujian Province has set up many nature reserves (保护区) to protect them. By planting more mangroves, we are not only saving the trees but also protecting our own homes from natural disasters.
25. The first paragraph mainly tells us that mangroves are ________.
A. trees on dry land B. special forests that “walk”
C. a kind of sea animal D. dangerous plants in Fujian
26. What is the main function of the mangrove’s (stilt roots)?
A. To make trees look pretty.
B. To get food from deep ground.
C. To help trees breathe and stay steady.
D. To keep fish away.
27. Why are mangrove trees called “walking trees”?
A. They move like animals with legs.
B. They change position slowly by growing new roots.
C. Wind blows them to new places fast.
D. People move them every year.
28. The underlined word “dense” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. thick and close together B. small and weak C. high and tall D. dry and hard
29. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Mangroves B. The Amazing Mangroves
C. Animals That Live in Mangroves D. Pollution in Fujian Mangroves
【答案】25. B 26. C 27. B 28. A 29. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,介绍了红树林的生长环境、独特的根系特点、被称为“会走路的树”的原因,以及它们对生态和人类的重要作用,同时提到了红树林面临的威胁与保护措施。
【25题详解】
第1段原文“But have you ever seen a forest that ‘walks’? In the coastal areas of Fujian and other southern provinces, there is a special kind of forest called the mangrove. These trees seem to ‘walk’ across the mud over time.”,说明第一段主要介绍红树林是一种会“走路”的特殊森林。
【26题详解】
第2段原文“These ‘legs’ help the tree breathe air even when the tide covers the ground. They also hold the tree firmly against strong waves and winds.”,说明高跷根的主要功能是帮助树木呼吸并保持稳定。
【27题详解】
第3段原文“As a mangrove tree grows older, its old roots may die and rot away. At the same time, new roots grow in the direction of the sea or along the coast. Over many years, this process makes the tree appear to move slowly from its original spot.”,说明红树林被称为“会走路的树”是因为它们通过长出新根缓慢改变位置。
【28题详解】
第4段原文“Their dense roots provide a safe home for fish, crabs, and birds.”,结合语境,红树林的根“thick and close together”,才能为鱼类等提供庇护,因此“dense”意为“thick and close together”。
【29题详解】
全文围绕红树林的特点、“走路”的原因、生态作用和保护展开,核心主题是介绍神奇的红树林,因此“The Amazing Mangroves”是最佳标题。
