I’ve had terrible eyesight since birth, and glasses don’t help at all. Of all the stories from my early childhood, the one about a tree is my mum’s favourite. She often tells it with a soft smile when our family gets together. The accident happened when I was only a two-year-old girl. We had just come back home from a trip. Mum got me out of the car and then turned to the driver to discuss taking out our luggage. I took that short moment of freedom to run across the lawn (草坪) as fast as my unsteady (不稳定的) legs could carry me. But I ran right into a big tree and fell onto the grass. Mum turned around quickly, thinking I would start crying. But I just sat there for a minute. Then I picked myself up and kept on going. Mum always adds proudly here that, no matter how many times I ran across that lawn in the months following, I never hit that tree again.
Mum loves using this story as an example. It reminds her that kids won’t really enjoy life if they’ re afraid to take risks, or if they don’t want to try again after falling. When I made big life decisions, like leaving home for college in another city or later moving far from my parents to look for a job, I was still that little girl running fast across the lawn. Through years of effort, I have become a respected teacher. Now I work at a school that helps students with special needs.
When I hold my students’ hands and walk along the tree-lined road of the school, I also like telling them about that tree in my childhood. I don’t just remember the pain of falling. Instead, I’m thankful that it was there. It didn’t mean to hurt a little kid like me. It has taught me something simple but important: The world isn’t always easy for everyone. Those unexpected trees we meet are actually there to help us grow.

In recent years, teenagers’ mental health has become a serious problem around the world. Many studies show that some young people are feeling stressed, lonely, or even hopeless. According to a study, about 65% of the teenagers in the world say they often feel sad or nervous. These feelings are often caused by heavy schoolwork, too much time on social media, or problems at home. While the digital age (数字时代) allows teens to connect online, it also makes some feel lonely in real life. At the same time, schools and families sometimes focus so much on grades that they forget to ask teens how they truly feel.
To help teenagers, many countries are taking action. In China, the government has created a special plan to improve mental health services for young people. Schools are starting to teach students how to manage stress and talk about their feelings. Many schools now have caring teachers in quiet rooms where students can go when they need help. Parents are also being encouraged to learn to listen to their children more patiently and build trust at home. Small actions, like asking “How was your day?” or spending time together, can make a big difference.
Communities are working to reduce the shame around mental health problems. For example, social media platforms (平台) are sharing encouraging stories instead of harmful information. Hospitals and local groups have set up free phone lines so that teens can talk to experts. These steps help young people feel safe to ask for help. If everyone works together, teenagers can grow up more healthily and happily. By caring for their emotional health more, we can give them the strength to face challenges. After all, supporting teens today means building a brighter future for everyone.
