Years ago when I worked at a small local grocery store, I became familiar with an old lady. She was a regular customer, and we ended up getting in the habit of chatting whenever she came in.
One day, during one of our chats I mentioned that I was going to take a day off for my 20th birthday later that month. She told me, “Well, I’ll have to bake you some cookies for your birthday, then.” I’d told her a couple weeks before though, and so the moment had slipped my mind by the time my birthday came around.
Two days after my birthday, I was coming out of the restroom in the back when I heard someone calling my name. I walked back up to the front and saw her there. She came up to me, handed me a Ziploc bag with 5 cookies in it, and wished me a happy late birthday. It took all I had to hold back my tears in front of her. I’d even forgotten that she said she’d do that for me. She remembered to take the time out of her day to make the cookies for me when she didn’t even have to! And then she even had the humility to say, “They aren’t my best work, but I wanted to do something for you.”
After she left, I called my mom and boyfriend and cried while I told them each what happened. I just wish I knew when her birthday was so I could do something nice for her.
24. What did the writer and the old lady often do in the store?

B. How an old lady’s kindness moved the writer.
C. Why the writer called her mother and boyfriend.

When you hear the word “home,” you probably think of the place you are living in right now. Maybe it is an apartment, a single house, or a two-story house. Maybe it is made of wood or stone. You may think houses are rather normal buildings, but some houses around the world are rather unique (独特的)!
The Bedouin people of the Middle East and North Africa live in interesting homes. The Bedouin people live in the desert, and they move around without staying to live in one place very long. So, they live in tents that are made of animal hair. The tents are easy to put up and take down when they move from place to place.
Before people made the first tents, they lived in caves (洞穴). Some people in the southern part of Spain live in caves today, too! They call these cave homes “cuebas.” These caves keep the house cool during the summer and warm during the winter.
Another type of home is the “igloo” used by the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. Igloos are normally made of ice and snow. The igloo protects the people from the wind as well as keeps them warm. In fact, the temperature inside an igloo can even reach 16°C just from body heat alone.
The Bagabao people of the Philippines used to live in what may be a childhood dream for some — a treehouse! These treehouses were built so that the people could watch for enemies and protect themselves from wild and dangerous animals. In addition, the people could stay cool in their treehouses during the hot summer season. Although the Bagabao people don’t live in these treehouses anymore, they still use things like them for resting and for meeting people.
If you ever get the chance, be sure to check out different homes of different cultures!
28. What is the characteristic of cuebas?
A. They are easy to put up and take down.
B. They are widely used by the Inuit people.
C. They are cool in summer and warm in winter.
29. What can we learn about an igloo?
A. It is very common in Spain.
B. It is normally made of ice and snow.
C. It can be used to watch for enemies.
30. Which is the house the Bagabao people used to live in?
A. B. C.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Ways to Build Houses
B. The Best Places to Live
C. Homes Around the World

There are only two kinds of lions in the world today. Asiatic lions used to travel from Greece to India. Today, only about 200 to 300 live in a national park in India. African lions lived in most of Africa, except for the desert. Today only 20,000 to 30,000 African lions are found in eastern and southern Africa. What happened?
One of the reasons is loss of habitat (栖息地). In Africa, lions have lost nearly 75% of their habitat to development. Lions live in grasslands and in wooded areas. They like to be by water holes or rivers for drinking. Also many of the animals they hunt come to water to drink. These are areas where people like to live and farm and raise animals. More people means fewer lions.
Lions are the only members of the cat family that live in groups. A group of lions living together is called a pride. A pride can have from 1 to 4 male (雄性) lions and 5 to 10 female lions, plus their babies. A pride needs a lot of land. A pride can travel 8 to 10 kilometres a day hunting.
Prides are very territorial (领地的). This means that they will fight with any other lions that come into their areas. The fighting usually happens among the male lions. Younger males will challenge the male lions of a pride and try to kill them. Then they will take over the pride.
In Africa, most lions are found in wildlife sanctuaries (避难所) and national parks. There are still some who live outside these areas. They are always in danger of being killed by livestock owners and hunters. Even inside the sanctuaries and parks, lions are not always safe. People need to be educated about what is happening to lions and work together to keep them safe.
32. What is paragraph 1 mainly about?
A. The number of lions is smaller.
B. African lions like to move around.
C. Lions are used to living in the desert.
33. What caused the loss of lions’ habitat in Africa?
A. Climate change. B. Human activities. C. Water pollution.
34. What do we know about a pride?
A. A pride needs much land.
B. There is no fighting among prides.
C. A pride can have at least 5 male lions.
35. What will the writer most probably talk about next?
A. The food of lions.
B. The habitat of lions.
C. The ways of saving lions.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余选项。
The holiday season is an ideal time to spread joy among the people who live near you. Doing something thoughtful to help them can lift their spirits. It can also make your own holiday more meaningful. 36
Start small. 37 You can take the time to say hello to a neighbour, carry grocery bags or packages for an older person, or stop to talk with a younger neighbour who looks up to you. These can have a positive influence on someone’s day.
38 Many people like to show their appreciation (感激) for their neighbours at the holidays by sharing a small gift. For example, with an adult’s help, you can make cookies, put a few in a gift bag, and give them to your neighbour with a note like, “We hope these treats bring holiday smiles!” Another idea is to give them a mug (杯子) with hot cocoa packets inside along with a note that says “Warm wishes!” 39
Check in. Many people have family to spend the holidays with, but some neighbours who live alone might be feeling a little lonely at this time of year. 40 While you’re there, you can ask them if they need anything. Another idea to discuss with your family is inviting a few neighbours to a holiday “open house” where you can share treats, a warm drink, and conversation.
A. Share a homemade gift.
B. Take the time to travel with them.
C. Little acts of kindness can have a big influence.
D. Here are some simple ways to help your neighbours.
E. With a parent, drop by their home to offer season’s greetings.
F. You could also take a homemade holiday greetings card to them.

阅读下面短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题,并将答案写到答题卡的相应位置。
We already know that animals communicate with other animals and people. They say hello by making noises and moving parts of their bodies. For example, when two horses meet, they put their noses together. Chimpanzees touch hands to say hello. They also put their arms up to tell other chimpanzees that there is danger. Animals say a lot of other things too, but we don’t understand their language.
However, the researchers from CETI (the Cetacean Translation Initiative) hope that one day in the future, we will understand what animals are saying. And, even more exciting, we will communicate with them!
So how will this happen? Well, scientists are collecting thousands of videos, for example, of dogs’ noises and facial expressions. They will use AI (artificial intelligence) to learn how to translate these noises and expressions into a language that humans can understand. We will discover the emotions that animals are expressing and the messages that they are trying to give us.
Of course, this will be fascinating, but will it help us in any way? Well, yes! We will know if our pets are sick, and we will know which part of their body is hurting. This means ______________. And that’s a very good thing!
61. How do animals say hello?
62. What do chimpanzees do when there is danger?
63. What do the researchers from CETI expect?
