My First Day of School
Frightened, I was walking into my first school in America. I had traveled a long distance from India in order to join my parents, who had been here for three years, hoping America would help my future. My father decided that I would have a better education here, so I enrolled (登记) in the local high school in my new town.
I was afraid of how I would do. On the first day, I went to my second class after I had missed my first. With anxiety, I reached for the door, opening it slowly. Without paying attention to my classmates, I went straight to the teacher and asked if this was the right class. With a soft voice he answered, “Yes.” His voice comforted me a little. He gave me a sheet called Course Requirements, which I would never get in India because we didn’t have anything like that. Then he asked me to choose where I would sit. I didn’t actually want to pick a seat. In India we had fixed seats, so I never needed to worry about that. I spent the rest of the class taking notes from the image produced by the overhead projector (投影仪). In Indian schools, we didn’t use the technology. We had to take notes as the teacher spoke.
It was noon. I was very confused about when I would have lunch. I went to my next class and the bell rang as I entered. I went through the regular (惯常的) process of asking the teacher if I was in the right class. She said, “It’s still fourth period.”
“But the bell just rang,” I said.
Changing from a gentle tone to a harsh (刺耳的) one, she said, “That is the lunch bell, young man.”
I apologized. Without another word I headed for the cafeteria. I felt lucky because we didn’t have this in India. Every confusion seemed like a barrier I had to get through to reach my goal. At the end of the day, I was on my way to the bus which we didn’t have in India either. I saw my bus and sat down inside happily. I was thinking, today wasn’t so bad.

People often say that the world is getting smaller. By this, they mean that with improved communications and trade, each country is becoming more and more familiar with one another. There seems to be a lot of truth to this. After all, you can buy African food in Norway, or watch a French movie in China.
But in spite of this, countries still have the power to shock people who visit them for the first time. For many of us, there are still real differences in the culture and habits between nations.
Recently, the Daily Mail reported on some culture shocks from around the world. A Serbian student, Milorad Boti, was highly surprised on a school trip to Germany when he found that public bathrooms were very different to those in his home country. He noticed that after using the toilet, the lid(盖子)rotated(旋转)as part of a cleaning process. Milorad was impressed. “That was the best thing that happened on that school trip,” he said.
Most often, however, it’s eating habits that are different between cultures. The Daily Mail article mentioned the shock of an Indian man, Kaushal Braot. When visiting a Western country, he notice people socializing in restaurants, often spending hours in them with friends. Kaushal was surprised because in India, restaurants are for one thing only: eating.
The cultural differences people noticew can seem positive, negative, or simply jst strange. But rather than something to be feared, these differences should be welcomed. Indeed, if the whole world were like one big country, it would be a much duller place. So let’s be proud of our own culture, and at the same time, open to the cultures of others.

C. Chinese culture is the best one in the world.
D. We should love our own culture and respect others’.
11. Milorad Boti’s and Kaushal Barot’s stories are mentioned to ________.

A narrow escape
A holiday in Penang is an annual affair for my family. My parents grew up in Penang and are very fond of Penang food. In December every year, we drive up to the island to spend three days visiting their favorite food spots.
This year, we started our journey up north on a Friday morning. The drive was interrupted by stops at Bidor Town and Kampar so it took us six hours to reach our destination. We stayed at one of the hotels in Batu Ferringhi. The beach was just a short walk from the hotel entrance and our rooms had a lovely view of the sea. We spent our first evening playing on the beach. After dinner, we returned to our rooms to play Monopoly. My parents have a rule for our holidays which is that we should spend time doing things together. There was to be no TV and no Internet.
The next morning, we went to Bukit Bendera and then spent the rest of the afternoon in town visiting our favorite hawker stalls (小贩摊位). As we were having tea at a shop, we overheard people talking about an earthquake near Sumatera, an island in Indonesia. But we didn’t care too much. Afterwards we headed back to the hotel and then went to the beach. We took a walk along the beach, picking up seashells along the way. Suddenly, I noticed a strange thing. The sea seemed to be retreating (后退) from the shore. I felt a little uneasy, so I asked my father to look at the curious occurrence. My father took one look and went pale. We saw a grey line in the distance moving towards the shore. It seemed to grow taller by the second. It was a tsunami (海啸)!

【答案】One possible version:
My father shouted at us to run back to the hotel. He grabbed my hand and pulled me with him. As we reached the hotel hall, I heard a very loud sound behind us. Dad pushed us towards the stairs. When we reached the second floor we heard the noise of rushing water and glass breaking. Dad yelled at us to keep climbing. The water level rose so fast that it wet my feet as I ran the last few steps to the third floor. We stopped on the fourth floor and looked down at the water below us. It had stopped rising. After some minutes, it began to drop.
We waited a long time before going downstairs. The hotel hall was unrecognizable. There was dirt and broken furniture scattered everywhere. Some people who were caught in the tsunami were either unconscious or groaning with pain. Only then did I realize what a narrow escape we had had. Dad called an ambulance and we helped the staff carry the injured. Other people cleared up the broken furniture. With our joint efforts, the hotel hall was back to its original condition.
