A robot created by Washington State
University(WSU)scientists is under test,which
could help elderly people with dementia()and
other limitations live independently in their own
homes.
The Robot Activity Support System,or
RAS,uses sensors fixed in a WSU smart home
to determine where its residents are, what they
are doing and when they need assistance with
daily activities. It runs through rooms and
around obstacles to find people on its own,
provides video instructions on how to do
simple tasks and can even lead its owner to
objects like their medication or a snack in the
kitchen.
Currently,an estimated 50 percent of
adults over the age of 85 need assistance with
everyday activities such as preparing meals and
taking medication and the annual cost for this
assistance in the US is nearly $2 trillion.RAS
is the first robot researchers to have tried to
incorporate into their smart home environment.
They recently published a study that shows how
RAS could make life easier for older adults
struggling to live independently.
The activities include walking the dog,
taking medication with food and water and
watering household plants.When the smart
home sensors detected a human failed to start
or was struggling with one of the tasks,RAS
received a message for help.
The robot then used its mapping and
navigation camera,sensors and software to
find the person and offer assistance.
The person could then indicate through a
tablet computer that they wanted to see a
video of the next step in the activity they were
performing,a video of the entire activity or
they could ask the robot to lead them to
objects needed to complete the activity.
Afterwards the study participants were
asked to rate the robot's performance. Most of

We all do it.We put off that annoying
task for five more minutes, then for thirty
minutes,then for hours,until it doesn't get
done at all.1 We spend so much time
stressing over the unfinished task.Caught up
in the cycle of procrastination(拖延),we
almost forget how to effectively tackle hard
tasks. However, there is something you can do
to nip procrastination in the bud and take back
control over your daily life.
2 We only have a limited supply of

chances of us tackling hard tasks are pretty

slim.Dive into your hardest task when your
energy level is at its highest. This will ensure
the best results.
Divide the task into smaller tasks. We
tend to get overwhelmed when a giant project
comes ahead of us,not knowing where to
start.Keep in mind that forests are made up of
individual trees.Though unable to take down a
whole forest at once, you could certainly start
with one tree or even a branch.3
Complete a small step each day,and you'll feel
less worried with each new task you accomplish.
Schedule your tasks on the calendar.4 To
avoid this,create a practical plan.It will help
you move past the initial paralysis you feel.
Instead of just writing the tasks down in a to-
do list, take it a step further and identify when
and how you'll accomplish it.This will help
avoid a large part of what holds you back.
5
Though it feels impossible, you can accomplish
everything you need to every single day. With a
fresh perspective and a detailed plan, you'll be on
your way to ending your procrastination once and
for all.
A.Tackle the most difficult task first.
B.Creating the plan is half the battle.
C.Dedicate yourself for a small period of time.
D.And the worst part is that we still find it
hard to enjoy our day.
E.Break down what seems impossible into
small achievable parts.
F.Just set an alarm on our phone to ring at a
fixed moment every day.
G.Nothing can make us more guilty than ending a
day without a single task accomplished.
