I.阅读理解
A
When someone is homeless or trying to
recover from a natural disaster, they are in
need of a lot of the basic life necessities that
many of us take for granted. While people are
often encouraged to donate canned goods, not
everyone is thinking about things like shoes.
Of course, you can't go looking for a new
job or a home if you have no shoes to walk in.
One woman in Hays,Kansas took this into
consideration, and found a way to help hundreds of
people.
Payless stores were going out of business,
and shoes were selling for as little as $1 per
pair,so a woman named Addy Tritt bought out
all the remaining shoes at the Hays Payless
store-more than 200 pairs-and donated
them to flood victims(灾民)in Nebraska.
Those shoes were then included in a flood
relief shipment taken to farmers in Nebraska
by Fort Hays State University.Tritt,who
recently graduated from FHSU's human resources
program,wanted to“pay it forward'”.
“I have been so lucky,”she said..“There
have been so many great people in my life who
have inspired me.I see so many terrible things
in the news.So many people have helped me
when I was down. They influenced me so much
that I want to help if I can."
Tritt has a history of charitable(慈善的)
acts. She has donated more than 60 bags of
school supplies to Hays students,and
organized a baby clothes drive and two supply
drives for the animal shelter.
"I really feel I have been directed and
guided to help people,”she said.“If you can
do something for someone else, you need to
find a way even if it is a pair of shoes."

After being unemployed for a few years,I
was looking for something to do in my spare
time that would also help to increase my skills
and confidence.
Having previously suffered from depression
and anxiety,I knew a full-time job would be more
of a long-term goal.When I was introduced to
Volunteering Matters,I was particularly interested
in the handy-person service.I was a bit nervous
though as it was brand new to me.After chatting
with the project coordinator,I signed up and went
through some initial training, which was really
relaxing and enjoyable.
In February,I took up the role as a handy-
person organizer, which means it is my
responsibility to speak to older people who
require our service. After that,I assign the job
request to the most appropriate volunteers,
based on their location and skills. It usually

takes about one hour per evening to complete
my task.
Having done this role now for six
months,I have learned a great deal and am
very proud to be a part of this project.I have
seen first-hand how important it is to help
older people,who would really struggle
without our service.I really feel that I am
doing my bit to help others and give something
back.It has helped me to believe in myself and
I have learned some new skills,which I didn't
believe I could ever do,especially my
communication,organization and interpersonal
skills.
It's great to be able to build a relationship
with our clients and volunteers and it is also a
lot of fun.My confidence has increased and I
absolutely love my volunteer organizer role.
Most recently,I have also been helping the
project coordinator with administration tasks
and publicity(宣传)work for the service,
which means I am improving my IT knowledge
as well.It means a lot that I have received help
and support from Volunteering Matters.At
the same time,I am helping the organization
and its beneficiaries(受益者)too.

When John was growing up,other kids
felt sorry for him.His parents always had him
weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage
and delivering newspapers.But when John
reached adulthood,he was better off than his
childhood playmates.He had more job
satisfaction,a better marriage and was
healthier.Most of all,he was happier.Far
happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study
that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys
from Boston. The study showed that those
who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and
more productive lives than those who had not.
"Boys who worked in the home or community
gained competence(能力)and came to feel
they were worthwhile members of society,
said George Vaillant,the psychologist(心理学
家)who made the discovery..“And because
they felt good about themselves, others felt
good about them.”
Vaillant's study followed these males in
great detail.Interviews were repeated at ages
25,31 and 47.Under Vaillant,the researchers
compared the men's mental-health scores with
their boyhood-activity scores.Points were
awarded for part-time jobs,housework,effort
in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done
as boys and how they turned out as adults was
surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the
most boyhood activities were twice as likely to
have warm relations with a wide variety of
people, five times as likely to be well paid and
16 times less likely to have been unemployed.
The researchers also found that IQ and family
social and economic class made no real difference in

how the boys turned out.Working-at any age-
is important.Childhood activities help a child
develop responsibility,independence,confidence and
competence一the underpinnings(基a础)of
emotional health. They also help him understand
that people must cooperate and work toward
common goals. The most competent adults are
those who know how to do this.Yet work isn't
everything. As Tolstoy once said,"One can live
magnificently in this world if one knows how to
work and how to love,to work for the person one
loves and to love one's work.

D.He was envied by others in his childhood.
10.Vaillant's words in Paragraph 2 serve as
A.a description of personal values and social
values
B.an analysis of how work was related to
competence
C.an example for parents'expectations of
their children
D.an explanation why some boys grew into
happy men
11.Vaillant's team obtained their findings by
A.recording the boys'effort in school
B.evaluating the men's mental health
C.comparing different sets of scores
D.measuring the men's problem solving
ability
l2.What does the underlined word“sharp”

roaring sound behind us.Quickly,my father pushed us towards the
stairs.Fear gripped us and we reached the first floor when we heard

water below us.It had stopped rising. After some minutes,it began to
drop.
Paragraph 2:
We waited a long time be fore going downstairs.Hardly had the
rushing water dropped when we saw the unrecognizable hotel gate.
There was dirt and broken furniture everywhere. Some people who
were caught in the water were either unconscious or burst into tears
with pain. What we saw weakened our heart and we decided to help the
