A description of the threat hanging over the
world's mammals,reptiles,amphibians and other
life forms has been published by the well-known
scientific journal,Nature.A special analysis carried
out by the journal indicates that an astonishing
41%of all amphibians on the planet now face
extinction while 26%of mammal species and 13%
of birds are similarly threatened.
In each case, the finger of blame points
directly at human activities.The continuing
spread of agriculture is destroying millions of
hectares of wild habitats every year, leaving
animals without homes,while the introduction
of newly-come species,often helped by
humans,is also damaging native populations.
At the same time, pollution and overfishing are
destroying ocean ecosystems.
"Habitat destruction,pollution or overfishing
either kill off wild creatures and plants or leave them
badly weakened,"said Derek Tittensor,an ocean
ecologist at the World Conservation Monitoring
Centre in Cambridge."The trouble is that in coming
decades, the additional threat of worsening climate
change will become more and more common and will
then kill off these survivors.
The problem,according to Nature,is worsened
because of the huge gaps in scientists'knowledge
about the planet's biodiversity.Evaluations of the
total number of species of animals and plants alive
vary from 2 million to 50 million. In addition,
evaluations of current rates of species'disappearances
vary from 500 to 36,000 a year."That is the real
problem we face,"added Tittensor."The scale of
uncertainty is huge..”
In the end, however, the data indicate that
the world is heading cruelly towards a mass
extinction-which is defined as one involving a

loss of 75%of species or more. This could arrive in
less than a hundred years or could take a thousand,
depending on extinction rates.
1.What's the main idea of the first paragraph?
A.Figures about some wild animals are
astonishing.
B.Nalure is a famous journal around the
world.
C.Many species are close to extinction.
D.Some rare species have appeared around the
world.
2.From the text we know that the future
threat to creatures and plants is
A.destruction of habitats
B.overfishing and pollution
C.the worsening climate change
D.human activities
3.What is the real problem we are facing now
according to Paragraph 4?
A.The killing of wild creatures and cutting of
trees.
B.The global warming caused by human beings.
C.The destruction of ocean ecosystem by
pollution.
D.Evaluation of current rates of species'
disappearances.

For humans,adapting to climate change
will mostly be a matter of technology.More air
conditioning,better-designed houses and
bigger flood defenses may help lessen the
effects of a warmer world.Animals will have
to rely on changing their bodies or their
behavior.A paper published in Trends in
Ecology &Evolution,a team led by Sara
Ryding,a professor in Australia, shows that is
already happening.In some species of
Australian parrot,for instance,beak size has
increased by between 4%and 10%since 1871.
班级
姓名
Similar trends are seen in species of mice and
bats growing bigger ears, tails, legs and wings.
All that fits nicely with evolutionary
theory."Allen's rule",named after Joe Allen,
who suggested it in 1877,holds that warm-
blooded animals in hot places tend to have
larger appendages than those in mild areas.
Such adaptations boost an animal's surface
area relative to its body volume, helping it to
shed extra heat.Fennec foxes,meanwhile,
which are native to the Sahara desert, have
strikingly large ears,especially compared with
their Arctic cousins.
Ryding's team combined data from
different species in different places. Now that
they have little in common apart from living on
a warming planet, climate change is the most
reasonable explanation.Since any evolutionary
adaptation comes with trade-offs,it is unclear
how far the process might go.Bigger beaks
might interfere with feeding,for instance.
Larger wings are heavier, and bigger legs cost
more energy to grow.
Honestly,studying a broader range of
animals will help firm up exactly what is
happening.For now,at least,the increase is
small, never much more than 10%.That may
change as warming accelerates. But it seems
clear that the world of the future is not just
going to be hotter than humans are used to.
The animals living in it will look different, too.
4.What does the author want to tell us by
mentioning Australian parrot in Paragraph 1?
A.Climate change is affecting animals.
B.Scientists are doing research on animals.
C.Humans can adapt to climate change more
easily.
D.Animals are adapting to warmer climate
in their own ways.
5.What is the benefit of having bigger body
parts according to the passage?
A.Getting rid of additional heat.
B.Becoming larger and stronger.

D.Becoming more sensitive to the environment.
6.What do we know about the change in
animals from the last two paragraphs?
A.It comes at an expense.
B.Its cause is definite.
C.It happens in the same habitat.
D.Its process will end soon.
7.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Living on a Warming Planet
B.Evolution to Survive Heat
C.Pioneering Research on Animals
D.Measures to Fight against Heat

After a year at sea,16-year-old Laura Dekker
can finally say,"Mission accomplished!"Last
month, she finished a daring trip around the world
aboard her 38-foot boat,Guppy.Dekker,who is
from the Netherlands, traveled more than 30,000
miles all by herself. She is the youngest person ever
to sail around the globe alone.
Dekker had wanted to take on this
challenge when she was even younger. She
first tried to set sail at the age of 13,but a
court in the Netherlands stopped her. They
said that she was too young to make such a
risky trip by herself. But Dekker insisted she
had the navigation skills and patience of an
adult sailor.
She finally took off on August 21,2010.
During her trip,Dekker battled loneliness,
storms, and worries about pirates. But she also
got to surf and scuba dive, and started a new
hobby:playing the flute.Although Dekker
didn't spend all of her time at sea-she
stopped at ports along the way-she did spend
her 16th birthday on the open ocean. To
celebrate,she ate doughnuts for breakfast.
But Dekker didn't sail into the record

children from attempting such dangerous feats
(壮举).But that didn't stop Dekker,who was
born on a yacht(大游艇)during a seven-year
world voyage undertaken by her parents.
Dekker doesn't mind that she won't hold
an official record. She says it was a personal
goal, and she is happy she achieved it.
"I am not disappointed at all that
Guinness World Records won't recognize my
attempt,”Dekker wrote on her website.“Idid
not start on my trip to achieve any record...I
did it just for myself."

canceled in order to.
A.set a higher sailing standard for teen sailors
B.stop children entering Guinness World

11.What could be the best title for this passage?

parts of the world.Boats let people find new
hunting grounds and discover new lands.1
The earliest boats were probably logs that
people sat on as they floated downstream.
Later, people made these logs more useful and
comfortable by burning and scraping away the
insides to make dugout boats and canoes.
2 They tied logs together to make
rafts. They wove reeds and branches to make
tidy little boats that are still used in many
parts of the world today. They sewed animal
skins together and filled them with air-like a
float you might use in a swimming pool. They
used paddles, poles, and oars to help steer,or
to move upstream.
Boats like the Greek trireme(三列桨船)
were big and heavy and hard to steer.3
Soon people figured out how to use sails to
catch the wind.Early sailboats might only have
one or two sails. But more sails meant more
power, and fast tall ships could have dozens.
People still use sailboats today, for cruising
and racing.
When steam engines were invented,
boating became easier than ever.4 As
engines got bigger and better,so did boats.
Over the years, boats have been used for
fishing,for fighting,for carrying goods,for
fun-even for living on.5
A.The world is a watery place.
B.It took hundreds of rowers to move a boat
like that.
C.People experimented with different kinds of
floating boats.
D.Boats have turned the world's waterways
into highways.
E.Until people learned to build boats, all this
water was a barrier.
F.They carry people and goods farther than
they've ever gone before.
G.Ships with steam engines could sail long
distances, even if there was no wind.ll.D[根据上文,8题空后面出现的“a garden chair'”可知,此处答案:4.D[因为天热,所以把辣香肠拿出来放在打开的窗户边的桌子上,
