五、阅读理解。
Have you ever wondered why you can remember your childhood birthday parties clearly but forget a new phone number within 10 seconds? Human memory is an amazing and complex(复杂的) ability that shapes our daily lives, learning and growth, and it has always been a hot research field for scientists.
Memory can be divided into short-term memory and long-term memory, and their functions are quite different. Short-term memory only stores a small amount of information temporarily(暂时地). Scientific research shows that the average adult's short-term memory can only hold 5 to 9 pieces of independent information at a time, and this information will disappear quickly if not repeated in time. For example, when you look up a phone number and dial it immediately, you make use of short-term memory, but you may forget it completely after hanging up. But long-term memory can store almost endless things. It can store knowledge, experiences and skills for many years, even a lifetime. A typical example is that many elderly people can clearly recall every detail(细节) of their first day at school more than 60 years ago.
Dr. Linda Smith, a famous cognitive psychologist(认知心理学家) at Indiana University, pointed out: " Memory is not a simple box for keeping things, but a busy and active system. If you learn things again and again, try to remember things actively, and link new ideas with old knowledge, you can make your long-term memory much stronger." This view explains why students who review their lessons regularly do better in exams than those who stay up late to study right before exams.
★ First, get enough sleep. Teenagers should sleep eight to nine hours every night, as the brain makes memories stronger during rest. Staying up late harms memory badly. Second, review actively. You can retell knowledge or draw mind maps without books. This helps your memory more than simple reading.Third, divide learning tasks—memorize 10 new words each time instead of 50, to reduce short-term memory pressure. Proper daily exercise and brain-healthy food like nuts and fish also help a lot.
( ) 1. What is the purpose of the first question at the beginning?
A. To show the writer’s rich knowledge. B. To attract readers and introduce the topic.
C. To explain the fact of daily life. D. To give an example of poor memory.
( ) 2. According to the passage, why can many elderly people clearly recall every detail of their first day at school more than 60 years ago?
A. They eat brain-healthy food from an early age.
B. They receive training from cognitive scientists.
C. They have a strong short-term memory ability.
D. They keep the information in long-term memory.
( ) 3. Which sentence can be put in the ★ ?
A. Why is memory so important for our daily study?
B. What exactly is short-term memory in our brain?
C. How can students improve their memory effectively?
D. What do scientists think of long-term memory?
( ) 4. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Staying up late does no harm to our memory.
B. Repeated learning helps improve long-term memory.
C. Short-term memory can store endless information.
D. It is impossible to improve our memory.
( ) 5. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Secrets of Human Memory B. Different Ways of Daily Study
C. A Great Cognitive Psychologist D. How to Get Better Grades
