Which book you should read based on your next travel destination
Haruki Murakami’s “1Q84” is a dystopian adventure that’s perfect for the plane ride to Japan.
Famed Japanese author Haruki Murakami creates an alternate 1984 called 1Q84 where nothing feels right and everything is slightly different. Set in Tokyo, Japan, this dystopian, mystery-filled fantasy novel is sure to keep your captivated during your trip.
Bring “One Hundred Years of Solitude” to read in South America.
A significant work of literature, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic follows generations of the Buendia family as they live in their South-American town. Scott Fitzgerald is believed to have been inspired by the Hamptons when crafting this book. Set in the Jazz Age, the book’s decadence, hot summers, and longing for past lovers make it a great companion for pool hopping, charcuterie eating, and luxury shopping in The Hamptons.
As you’re travelling around Amsterdam, read “The Fault in Our Stars”.
Previously adapted into a film in 2014, John Green’s story of star-crossed teenagers famously includes a trip to Amsterdam. The Anne Frank House and The Rijksmuseum are two of many major destinations mentioned in the book. Plus, the bench from the film adaptation of this novel has ever become its own tourist spot.
21. If you are into parallel existence and you are full of imagination, which book would you like to pick up?
A. The Fault in Our Stars. B. One Hundred Years of Solitude.
C. 1Q84. D. The Great Gatsby.

For three decades, Camilleri, a Canadian fashion designer, had made a name for herself dressing A-listers. Her beautiful, delicate styles from leather, to evening wear, to custom other showed in the covers of the hottest magazines.
But when Turnbull — a well-known journalist and wheelchair user since a terrible accident left her quadriplegic(四肢瘫痪者) in 1983 — approached her to design stylish, comfortable clothes to fit her body through the seasons, Camilleri realized her real calling was to help bring fashion to a completely under-served community. “I had no idea that someone in a chair had any different clothing needs than you or I,” says the designer. “The world was my market because nobody had ever done this before.” In 2004 Camilleri opened a boutique(精品店) specially for people who use wheelchairs.
“Everything we do, the starting point is from a seated frame. So what happens when you’re sitting? What happens to the clothes? Where are they getting together?” Camilleri explains. “We literally had to recreate the patterns to accommodate a seated frame.”
Her custom creations have changed lives. Winkelaar has been in a wheelchair since a car accident two weeks before his fourth birthday. Until he met Camilleri, he lacked confidence in his appearance and was afraid of entering the clothing stores because he had trouble finding trousers that fit properly. Salah has spastic cerebral palsy(痉挛性脑瘫). She says clothing stores are always daunting places full of pieces out of reach. Salah says she carries herself differently now and she is more confident in her appearance. Being able to have access to fashionable functional clothing gives her a lot of dignity(尊严).
“Camilleri’s pieces are now part of an exhibit at the Royal Ontario Museum, and her success in a new rare market has not gone unnoticed in the mainstream fashion world. She is a truly brilliant technician. She puts fashion and confidence within reach of the disabled,” Canadian television personality and fashion critic Jeanne Beker says.
24. What drives Camilleri to open a boutique?
A. Seeking fame. B. Making a profit.
C. Meeting a challenge. D. Providing service.
25. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “daunting” in paragraph 4?
A. Inspiring. B. Striking. C. Frightening. D. Comforting.
26. What message does Beker want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Camilleri is a highly original thinker. B. Camilleri is a productive market advisor.
C. Camilleri is a successful fashion innovator. D. Camilleri is a critical technician leader.
27. Which of the following can best describe Camilleri?
A. Creative and stubborn. B. Caring and farsighted.
C. Ambitious and hardworking. D. Determined and conventional.

Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3D digital libraries. Across 163 different countries, 1,000 natural and cultural historic places make up our most precious human heritage, which UNESCO calls World Heritage Sites.
We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever. Now there’s a better choice. New digital-conservation technologies let us hold on to them, at least virtually, through 3D scanning, modelling and digital storage. Such projects can be accomplished through cooperation between governments, universities, industry and non-profit organisations.
To make a 3D model, a laser scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping images(重叠图像) from all possible angles. A computer then sews them together into one large surface image and draws lines from one point to another to create a wire-frame model(线框模型). High-resolution(高分辨率) digital cameras add colour and texture. When fully put together, the models can be viewed, printed or operated.
These scans do more than preserve a memory in a database. With highly accurate measurements, archaeologists can find hidden passages or reveal ancient engineering tricks. School kids can explore places they might otherwise never see. And when a site is destroyed, the scans can even be used to reconstruct what was there. That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.
28. How does the author show the necessity for 3D digital libraries in the first two paragraphs?
A. By listing the threats to our human heritage.
B. By introducing some damaged historical sites.
C. By quoting some experts’ views on heritage protection.
D. By explaining UNESCO’s research on World Heritage Sites.
29. What can be inferred from Paragraph 3?
A. The function of a laser scanner is to add colour and texture to the image.
B. The reflection of light off an object is recorded in a computer.
C. The process of making a 3D model is carried out with the help of a laser scanner.
D. High-resolution digital cameras make the models viewable, printable, and operable.
30. What do we know about the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda?
A. It is metal-framed.
B. It is still in its original condition.
C. It was once destroyed in an earthquake.
D. It was reconstructed thanks to 3D models.
31. What does the author intend to say through this text?
A. Never ignore the destructive power of war.
B. Take action to reduce pollution in historic places.
C. Take advantage of 3D technology to keep history.
D. Invest more money to preserve World Heritage Sites.
D
The concept of “Information cocoon”, first proposed by Harvard professor Cass Sunstein, has become an increasingly significant issue. It refers to the phenomenon where individuals are limited to a narrow range of information that matches their existing preferences and beliefs, cut off from diverse viewpoints.
The formation of information cocoons is driven by two primary forces. Technologically, complicated algorithms(算法) on social media, news, and video platforms analyze user behavior such as clicks, likes, and search history to deliver personalized content. For example, TikTok and Google push similar short videos or articles based on users’ browsing history, creating a closed cycle. The more similar content users consume, the more similar their feeds become. Socially, people naturally tend to associate with like-minded peers, strengthening shared views and avoiding conflicting opinions. Together, these factors trap individuals within a comfortable but closed information cage.
Information cocoons bring far-reaching harms to individuals and society. Weng Zhihao, associate professor at Fudan University, notes that long-term exposure to one-sided information narrows people’s worldview and suppresses (压制) their critical thinking. For individuals, teenagers addicted to entertainment short videos will lose the ability of in-depth reading and thinking. For society, rumors about health products spread rapidly in cocoons, misleading the public and disrupting social order.
Breaking information cocoons requires joint efforts from individuals, platforms and society. Liu Xingliang, an expert on information and communication, suggests that improving algorithm mechanisms and strengthening media literacy(素养) education are the keys to solving the problem. Individuals should actively expand information sources and check information from multiple channels; platforms should adjust algorithms to push diverse content; society should promote media literacy to guide the public to think independently.
This self-built information cage, like a silkworm’s cocoon, provides short-term comfort but limits mental development over the long term. Only through joint efforts, technological improvement, and educational guidance can we break out of these cocoons, forming a more informed, inclusive, and progressive society.
32. What’s the main function of the first paragraph?
A. To point out a problem. B. To explain a concept.
C. To introduce the topic. D. To present a phenomenon.
33. What does the example of TikTok and Google highlight in paragraph 2?
A. The similarity between apps. B. A trap caused by technology.
C. The popularity of short videos. D. The benefit of personalized content.
34. What does the underlined word “disrupting” mean in paragraph3?
A. disturbing. B. encouraging. C. removing. D. establishing.
35. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. Improve the algorithms. B. Escape the silent cage.
C. Limit entertainment app. D. Promote media literacy.

Scientists and educators in the US and China say it’s important to introduce very young children to new technologies. 36 They say that with the right approach, children learn not to be frightened of abstract thinking.
Even before children learn to read and write, they can manipulate — move and control images. 37
Mitchel Resnick is co-developer of a code-learning program called Scratch Jr. He says that is exactly what programming is all about.
“Each block tells the character what to do. You snap the blocks together, and you’ve made a computer program. 38 This block make the cat go to the right. This one makes the cat jump. By snapping them together I make a computer program that makes it move and then jump.”
Parents decide how much time their children can spend using modern technology. But Sandra Calvert, director of the Children’s Digital Media Center at Georgetown University, says it’s all around us.
“ 39 Just as it’s a worry that there may be too much screen time, there is also a concern that our children will be left behind if they don’t know how to use the technologies that are going to shape the 21st century careers, jobs and how we are going to succeed as a nation.” Children between the ages of 4 and 15 use tools and machines at so-called “maker spaces” in Beijing. The maker space basically serves as an open-access workshop. 40 The young people are part of the so-called “maker movement,” a do-it-yourself community connecting people who like to make things with their hands.
A. There, children use tools and machines like 3D printers to create and build projects.
B. Each block has a different behavior.
C. Computer scientists perform lots of research in computer theory and systems.
D. They advise developing skills from computer programming to designing electronic circuits.
E. Tablet computers with touch — sensitive screens are perfect for lining up simple commands.
F. The education and development of our children are extremely important.
G. We live in the digital age.

“Acknowledged, Detective. This is my...”
He hung up and told the driverless UNATS Robotics car to get him down to the railway station as fast as it could, angry with himself and with Ada—whose middle name was Trouble, after all—for making him deal with a robot before he’d had his breakfast. The name had been his ex-wife’s idea, something that she’d insisted on.
His ex-wife. He hadn’t thought of her in years. Well, months, weeks, certainly. She’d been a brilliant computer scientist at the UNATS Robotics school at the University of Toronto. Now she settled in her own research lab in Beijing, providing the kinds of software solutions for robot applications.
He itched to wiretap her, to read her email or listen in on her phone conversations. He could have done that when they were still together, but he never had. If he had, he would have found out what she was planning.
He could have talked her out of it.
“And then what, Artie?” said the nagging voice in his head. He couldn’t stop her from chasing her own dream—making the smartest robot in the world, especially with their little daughter in her belly.
“Shut up!”he told the nagging voice.
Paragraph 1:
In a few minutes, he was at the front gate of the railway station.

Paragraph 2:
There she was, standing by a teenage girl who has the same blue eyes as his.

Chatsworth House is one of England’s most famous houses. It’s located in Derbyshire, within the Peak District National Park. In the 15th century, this land was acquired by the Leche family. In 1549, they sold all their rights in the area to Sir William Cavendish. The house was built by Sir William Cavendish and his wife, Bess of Hardwick. The Cavendish family’s influence and wealth grew over time. Throughout the years, the house has been rebuilt and improved by the family. In 1939, 250 students arrived from North Wales, and Chatsworth House became their school until 1946. Today, Chatsworth House is popular with visitors. It’s known for its art, gardens, and history. It has been used in many films over the years, including Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. The Cavendish family still live there, but parts of the house and grounds are open to the public.

A 29. C 30. D 31. C
根据第二段中“We lose a little of that heritage every day. War, climate change and pollution have a bad effect, as do wind and rain. The $4 million a year that UNESCO spends on preservation is not nearly enough to take care of even the four dozen sites considered at approaching risk of being lost forever.(我们每天都在失去部分这样的遗产。战争、气候变化、污染,以及风雨侵蚀,都对其造成了不良影响。联合国教科文组织每年用于遗产保护的400万美元经费,远远不足以保护哪怕只是那几十处被认为濒临永远消失风险的遗址。)”可知,作者在前两段通过列举对人类遗产的威胁来说明三维数字图书馆的必要性。故选A。
根据第三段“To make a 3D model, a laser scanner bounces light off an object and records the results. To reproduce every corner and opening, the scanner collects overlapping images (重叠图像) from all possible angles.(制作三维模型时,激光扫描仪会向物体发射光线并记录反射结果。为了重现每个角落和开口,扫描仪会从所有可能的角度收集重叠图像。)”可知,从第三段可推断出制作三维模型的过程是借助激光扫描仪完成的。故选C。
30. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“That has already happened for one World Heritage Site, the Kasubi Tombs in Uganda. Built of wood in 1882, they were destroyed by fire in 2010 and rebuilt in 2014, based in large part on 3D models made in 2009. More than 100 World Heritage Sites have been already preserved as 3D models, and conservationists are racing to record as many more as possible.(这样的事情已经在一处世界遗产地——乌干达的卡苏比王陵上发生了。该陵墓于1882年用木材建造而成,却在2010年的一场大火中被毁,2014年得以重建,很大程度上是基于2009年制作的三维模型。目前,已有超过100处世界遗产地被保存为三维模型,保护主义者们正争分夺秒地记录尽可能多的其他遗产地。)”可知,多亏了3D模型,乌干达的卡苏比古墓才能得以重建。故选D。
31. 推理判断题。根据第一段中“Before war and time destroy more of our important cultural sites, we need to save them in 3D digital libraries.(在战争和时间进一步破坏我们众多重要的文化遗址之前,我们需要将它们保存在三维数字图书馆中。)”
C 33. B 34. A 35. B
根据第一段“The concept of “Information cocoon”, first proposed by Harvard professor Cass Sunstein, has become an increasingly significant issue. It refers to the phenomenon where individuals are limited to a narrow range of information that matches their existing preferences and beliefs, cut off from diverse viewpoints.(哈佛大学教授凯斯・桑斯坦首次提出的 “信息茧房” 概念已然成为愈发严峻的问题。它指人们只接触契合自身偏好与观点的狭隘信息,隔绝多元看法的现象。)”可知,本段开篇引出全文中心话题信息茧房,为下文讲成因、危害、解决办法做铺垫,并非单纯下定义,主要作用是引入话题。故选C项。
33. 细节理解题。根据第二段“Technologically, complicated algorithms (算法) on social media, news, and video platforms analyze user behavior such as clicks, likes, and search history to deliver personalized content. For example, TikTok and Google push similar short videos or articles based on users’ browsing history, creating a closed cycle.(从技术层面来说,各大平台复杂的算法会分析用户行为并推送个性化内容。例如抖音和谷歌会根据浏览记录推送相似内容,形成封闭循环。)”可知,该例子说明了技术带来的信息禁锢陷阱。故选B项。
34. 词句猜测题。根据第三段“For society, rumors about health products spread rapidly in cocoons, misleading the public and disrupting social order.(对于社会而言,保健品谣言在茧房中快速传播,误导大众,disrupting社会秩序。)” 故选A项。
根据最后一段“This self-built information cage, like a silkworm’s cocoon, provides short-term comfort but limits mental development over the long term. Only through joint efforts, technological improvement, and educational guidance can we break out of these cocoons, forming a more informed, inclusive, and progressive society.(这种自我构筑的信息茧房,如同蚕茧一般,虽能带来短暂的安逸,却从长远来看束缚了思维的发展。唯有通过各方共同努力、技术优化以及教育引导,我们才能冲破这些茧房,构建一个见闻更广、包容开放、积极进步的社会。)”可知,本文解释信息茧房的定义、形成原因与危害,指出它会束缚思维,并呼吁个人、平台与社会共同努力冲破信息茧房。所以B项“Escape the silent cage(冲破沉默的牢笼)”符合语境,适合用作标题。故选B项。

In a few minutes, he was at the front gate of the railway station.

Paragraph 1:
In a few minutes, he was at the front gate of the railway station. Ada opened the door for him. He stepped out of the UNATS Robotics car hurriedly to catch the bullet train for Beijing, where his ex-wife, a top computer scientist lived. During the journey, he constantly considered how to persuade his ex-wife to quit her research, which could get her into trouble. Clearly, it was no easy task. She had chased her dream for ages. The train pulled in at the railway station. He began to look for his ex-wife who had promised to pick him up.
Paragraph 2:
There she was, standing by a teenage girl who has the same blue eyes as his. Artie walked up to them slowly. With so many words to say, he felt a knot in his throat. At last, he looked into their daughter’s eyes and said “Hi, my lovely girl!” His voice was trembling slightly. “Daddy! Mommy has told me everything. You don’t need to worry about us anymore. Yesterday, she worked out the smartest robot software successfully.” Artie turned to his ex-wife in disbelief. She nodded. “I could never achieve my dream without your support.” Artie hugged them both thinking to himself, “Never stop a dream-chaser!”
