Passage A
(25-26九上·湖南长沙一中初级中学等·期中)
Imagine a writer who described the times with nothing but words. That was Mao Dun (1896—1981), one of China’s greatest modern writers. Born as Shen Yanbing in Zhejiang, he later chose the pen name “Mao Dun”. With the help of his friend Ye Shengtao, this name became famous.
So what powers Mao Dun’s writing? His masterpiece Midnight (Ziye), published in 1933, gives us the answer. The story takes place in busy Shanghai. It follows Wu Sunfu, a factory owner who fights against foreign competitors and dishonest officers. Through Wu’s sad story, Mao Dun showed the real problems China faced in the 1930s. The book was so popular that critics (评论家) called 1933 “the year of Midnight”.
Mao Dun could write about more than just cities. His Rural Trilogy (农村三部曲)—Spring Silkworms, Autumn Harvests, Winter Ruins—voiced the feelings of poor farmers. In these stories, good harvests (收成) sometimes bring disaster. This shows how big world events could shake even the smallest Chinese villages. Mao Dun could move easily from writing about business offices to farming fields. You can feel his deep care for common people on every page. But his real gift was his realistic writing style. With this ability, he recorded social changes so clearly that his books are like history and literature joined as one. Readers can almost see and feel the time periods he wrote about.
As we near his 130th birthday in 2026, Mao Dun’s works still speak to us today. They remind us that great writing is more than just for fun—it helps us see the world more clearly. For young readers today, his books open a window to China’s past and encourage us to value our own literary treasures.
1. What do we know about Mao Dun?
A.The name Mao Dun is his real name.
B.His hometown made him famous.
C.He is among China's greatest modern writers.
2. Which is closest to the underlined word “powers” in meaning in Paragraph 2?
A.提供电力 B.赋予力量 C.掌控权力
3. Why did Mao Dun write about both city people and poor farmers?
A.Because he lived in both city and countryside.
B.Because he made money from them.
C.Because he cared about common people.
4. What does the writer think of Mao Dun’s works?
A.Still valuable.
B.Too difficult.
C.Only historical.
Passage B
(25-26九上·湖南永州宁远县·期末)
Just imagine this: your parents passed away and left you living with your only relative who you’d never met before. That’s exactly what happens to the character Pollyanna in the famous children novel Pollyanna.
11-year-old Pollyanna is sent by a charitable organization (慈善组织), Lady Aids, to live with her only aunt Miss Polly after her parents die. Miss Polly is a very wealthy and strict woman who lives all by herself with just a nanny(保姆), Nancy and a gardener, Tom. In fact, she is not very happy with the news that Pollyanna would be staying with her. But she thinks that it’s her duty to help her dead sister’s little child.
Pollyanna, on the other hand, is glad to stay with Aunt Polly as she is the only person she has as her family. By playing the Glad Game, she can always find something to be glad about in every situation. One Christmas, Pollyanna hopes for a doll as a present, but finds only a pair of crutches (拐杖) in the box. Making the game works, Pollyanna’s father taught her to look at the good side of things—in this case, to be glad about crutches because “we didn’t need to use them!”
Pollyanna brings cheer and laughter to everybody’s life around her, including the sick, the lonely, the old…Everything goes well—until one day something terrible happens that even Pollyanna doesn’t know how to feel glad anymore...

They keep fighting “bad guys”, trying to live life on their own.
Nobody is like a mirror. Pang Zhongwang is an example. Twenty-six years ago, however, he was born a poor “nobody” in rural Hebei. His late (已故的) mother had a disability and couldn’t work. His father suffered from a serious mental illness. Despite (尽管) all these challenges, Pang, under his mother’s influence, grew up optimistic (乐观的). What makes an art form last over 600 years? Kunqu Opera, one of China’s oldest and most beautiful traditional operas, has achieved this. However, it once faced challenges like many other traditional Chinese art forms. Modern culture such as pop music and movies took the spotlight, leaving fewer young people interested in Kunqu.

Professor Fu Jin from the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts (中国戏曲学院) explains why Kunqu is so special. It’s among the most beautiful and well-known Chinese operas, showing traditional Chinese thinking, social values and lifestyles. (25-26九上·河南省周口市扶沟县联考·中考模拟二)
In our recent English classes, we read The House on Mango Street (《芒果街上的小屋》) by Mexican-American author Sandra Cisneros. 1 Because of this, many of my classmates didn’t enjoy it, but I did.
The book tells the story of Esperanza, a Mexican-American girl. 2 Through different characters and their stories, it talks about themes such as personal identity (身份), immigrant (移民) experience, and women and marriage.
In the chapter My Name, Esperanza struggles with the idea of her name. She explains that it means “hope” in English, but in Spanish it means “sadness” and “waiting”. 3 So, she gives herself a new name: Zeze the X.
In some chapters, she talks about women and marriage. While reading it, I thought of a picture: women looking out the window, wishing they could go outside and see the world. 4
I believe this is why Esperanza wants a house of her own. To her, the house represents a new life. 5 The book writes about change and depression, yet it still holds out hope at the end.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使短文意思通顺、内容完整。
A.It means she can make her own decisions.
B.But they have to stay and become housewives.
C.She wants to change her name to show her true self.
D.The book has a very special writing style, almost like poetry (诗歌).
E.She has just moved into a small house on Mango Street with her family.
Passage B
(25九上·广东省广州市天河区·期末)
Many movie fans wonder, “How are movies made?” Actually, the process of making a movie begins long before the cameras started rolling.
1 Many writers, actors, and directors carry notebooks to write down ideas that come to them during the day. The best ideas grow in their minds until they’re big enough to become a film.
When an idea has fully grown for some time, it is written into a script. It breaks up the story into scenes and lays out the actions and dialogues for the characters in the story. 2
Then it is time to make a storyboard. It helps writers and directors decide what the movie will look like. Many people draw storyboards by hand.
Is it time to film yet? Not quite! 3 Before filming, movie makers must find the right people to make a movie. And for big movies, they might need hundreds or even thousands of people.
After everything is in place, it’s time to get the cameras rolling. Everyone taking part in the film travels to the shooting spots. 4 After filming, the job continues. Editors put different video clips together and then add music and anything else needed to complete the film. When they’re done, the movie is finally ready for the big screen.
5 However, it is also full of fun. Do you want to have a try?
A.It takes many people to make a movie.
B.Film making is a long and difficult process.
C.All movies, long or short, start as just an idea.
D.There, they shoot each scene until they get it just right.
E.It is written long before filming starts and guides everyone in making the movie.

In Yunnan, China, a special clay figure called “wamao” can often be seen on rooftops. These clay cats, with their big eyes and open mouths, might look a bit scary, but locals believe they protect homes from bad luck and bring peace. In 2023, wamao was recognized as Yunnan’s provincial intangible cultural heritage.
Zhang Hang, a 32-year-old artist, is an inheritor (继承人) of the Kunming wamao-making skill. He first discovered wamao in 2012 while studying folk art design at Yunnan Arts University. Deeply attracted by this traditional art form, he began collecting old wamao from villages. Now his Heart Chamber Wamao Museum has over 700 pieces. “Each wamao carries history, culture, and people’s hopes for prosperity,” Zhang says.
To create a wamao, Zhang first mixes special clay, then shapes it by hand. After drying the figure naturally, he fires it in a kiln (窑). While skilled artisans can complete one cat in a week, Zhang sometimes spends a month perfecting a design that blends tradition with innovation. Do you know a well-known novel that focuses on ancient Chinese scholars (学者)? It’s The Scholars, written by Wu Jingzi, a great writer from the Qing Dynasty. Although many members of Wu’s family used to take imperial (科举的) examinations in order to gain positions as government officials, he himself showed a strong dislike for such a lifestyle. He noticed many social and personal problems among the scholars of his time and made up his mind to create this novel to present their true life situations.
The novel is made up of many short but deeply meaningful stories. All its main characters are scholars who try their best to prepare for imperial examinations, hoping to win official positions. One of the most famous characters is Fan Jin, who failed the exam repeatedly for over 40 years before he finally succeeded. Overjoyed at the good news of his success, he even lost his mind, which not only makes readers find it ridiculous but also makes them think deeply about the social system behind it.
Wu Jingzi created these stories not just for fun, but to warn people about the problems shown by some scholars under the imperial examination system. Many of them only cared about achieving success in exams and gaining wealth, forgetting the true value of education and personal virtue. As one of the most remarkable long novels in ancient Chinese literature, The Scholars shows a real picture of the old society and helps us get a better understanding of the lives, values and difficulties of ancient scholars. It’s such a precious cultural treasure that it’s well worth reading for everyone.

一、阅读理解
Passage A
(25-26九上·湖南长沙一中初级中学等·期中)

Passage A
(25-26九上·河南省周口市扶沟县联考·中考模拟二)
