“Mathematical symbolism and metaphor(隐喻) are present in every kind of literature, from fairy tales to War and Peace,” says mathematician Sarah Hart.In Once Upon a Prime, she lays bare some of this hidden math and meaning in a host of poetry, novels and legends.
She starts with nursery rhymes, often full of counting—such as One,Two,Buckle My Shoe—showing how numbers go into our very first encounters with the world of words. This is not just through counting but also through the rhythms and rhyme patterns. It’s also through trebling—where a word or phrase is repeated three times, such as “Row,Row,Row Your Boat”.
The number three is everywhere in common expressions—“Ready,Set,Go!” or “Learning your ABCs.” It’s also central to story structure.Characters tend to come in threes, too, like The Three Little Pigs, and even in jokes.
Hart suggests this emphasis on three has some basis in geometry.Three is the smallest number of sticks that can make a triangle. Therefore the number three is given “a sense of strength and completeness,” Hart writes.
For a book about math and literature,it’s not surprising that Hart focuses quite a bit on poetry, which is often defined by patterns of some sort.Perhaps more meaningful is her look at how math also creates the structure of novels.
Some readers may wonder if Hart’s love of math simply leads her to find these patterns in literature. But the chances must be extremely high for the examples she presents to be only chance.
Hart’s simple breakdowns of both math and literature make the book easy for anyone to follow,no matter their proficiency in either subject. Not everyone will finish the book and discover the mathematical treasures hidden in a book or poem. But that takes little away from the pleasure of reading it.
28.What does the underlined phrase “lays bare” mean in paragraph 1?
A.Picks. B.Creates.
C.Uncovers. D.Receives.
29.How does Sarah Hart support her opinions in her book?
A.By referring to a subject.
B.By drawing comparisons.
C.By providing examples.
D.By using experts’ words.
30.What is a feature of Once Upon a Prime according to the text?
A.It highlights the charm of poetry.
B.It focuses on the origin of geometry.
C.It explains a difficult mathematical theory.
D.It reveals the mathematical impact on novels.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.A Glimpse into Mathematics
B.The Hidden Math in Literature
C.Strength and Completeness of Numbers
D.Mathematical Symbolism and Metaphor

The call to “know yourself” has been there since ancient times, but our sense of self doesn’t always match what others perceive.Considering the stories we tell about ourselves can help us to change our minds for better.
For many years, psychologists saw identity as a combination of someone’s values, beliefs, goals and social roles. Then,in the 1980s,Bob Johnson created the life story model of identity,in which he proposes that,as we go through life, these core features are built in with our memories to create a personal story through which we understand our lives.
Our life story is something that starts coming together in our teenage years, when we begin to organise our lives into chapters around key events or life changes, and begin to see ourselves as both the central character and,to a varying extent, the story’s author.People with more consistent stories tend to have a stronger sense of identity, and they feel their life has more meaning, direction and sense of purpose.Such people show greater overall life satisfaction, too.
Johnson has also investigated the link between well-being and certain story themes. He discovered that whether someone describes having had some control over events in their past is an important predictor of a person’s mental health.Another key theme involves finding some kind of positive meaning after stressful events.“People could talk about gaining knowledge or personal growth,” says Johnson. His research shows that this is often missing for people with mental health conditions. The good news is that there is evidence we can learn to change our own story.
Lisa Green, another researcher, sounds a few notes of caution(谨慎).For instance, hearing about the power of redemptive(拯救性的) stories, many people may feel forced to find a positive angle on horrible events. She says that Western culture already pushes people to look for the silver lining behind every cloud.
If you want to turn over a new leaf, though, one top tip is that it helps to choose a significant date that signals the start of a new “chapter”.Contrary to popular doubt, resolutions made on 1 January are more effective for this reason. So,whether your goal is saving money or getting fit, there is no better time to become the author of our own destiny(命运).
32.What can be inferred about personal stories?
A.They are unrelated to health.
B.Consistent ones lead to stress.
C.They are relevant to happiness.
D.Thematic ones hold back change.
33.What can we learn from this passage?
A.Talking about gains from failure is negative.
B.New Year resolutions are well received.
C.The West tends to overvalue optimism.
D.Social roles fail to be highlighted.
34.What does the author mainly do in this passage?
A.Clarify a goal.
B.Analyse an event.
C.Make a comparison.
D.Illustrate an approach.
35.What is the passage mainly about?
A.How self-identity works.
B.How story-tellers are made.
C.How personal stories raise doubts.
D.How timing affects personal identity.

Emily was a shy and quiet student in Greenfield High School.Emily was known for her quiet behavior and her love for literature, often found lost in the pages of a book during lunch breaks.
One day,as Emily walked through the hallway, she noticed a colorful poster announcing an upcoming English poetry competition. Her heart raced with excitement at the prospect of showcasing her talent, but her mind was immediately flooded with doubts.“What if my poem is not good enough? What if everyone laughs at me?” she thought to herself, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment.
As the days went by,Emily found herself caught between her desire to participate and her fear of failure. She talked with her best friend,Sarah, who had been by her side since they were little. She was known for her outgoing personality and her ability to make everyone feel included.
“You have a gift,Emily,” Sarah said reassuringly, her blue eyes filled with encouragement.“Don’t let your fears hold you back. You never know what might happen unless you try.”
With Sarah’s support,Emily decided to take a leap of faith and submit her poem for the competition. As the day of the event drew near, she felt a mix of nervousness and expectation. She spent hours perfecting her poem, carefully choosing each word and line to convey her emotions. She practiced her poem in front of the mirror, trying to perfect her delivery and expression.
But despite her newfound confidence,Emily couldn’t shake off the feeling of doubt in her mind. These thoughts consumed her, making it difficult for her to focus on anything else.
It was during one of these moments of self-doubt that Sarah came to her rescue once again.“You’re an amazing writer,Emily,” she said, her voice filled with warmth and sincerity.“Your poem is going to be incredible.Just believe in yourself.”With Sarah’s words in her mind,Emily felt a renewed sense of determination.

Good morning,everyone!
I’m honored to share with you a poem written by our team,a cinquain themed adversity.
As we know,a cinquain, consisting of five lines,is a simple form of poem that amateurs can easily write. The poem we wrote aims to offer an insight into adversity, filled with challenges but rewards in our daily life.Faced with difficulties,we may fail. However,we should reflect on ourselves and continue with courage and perseverance rather than give up.Surely,we’ll gain valuable experience, which will undoubtedly build up our confidence and enable us to grow up.Let’s cope with the adversity with a brave heart.
That’s all.Thank you for listening!
第二节
On the day of the competition,Emily took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. The audience fell silent as she began to recite her poem, her voice trembling slightly at first. She suddenly saw Sarah looking at her with encouraging eyes. Her confidence grew, and her words flowed effortlessly. As she concluded her poem, the audience erupted into applause.Emily felt a sense of pride and accomplishment wash over her, knowing that she had conquered her fears and given it her all.Her eyes sparkled with joy as she looked out at the sea of smiling faces.
In the end,Emily’s poem won first place in the competition. She was filled with immense joy and gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging that her friend’s encouragement had been the greatest motivation she could have received.Overwhelmed with emotion, she embraced Sarah tightly and expressed her heartfelt thanks, attributing her newfound courage to stand on stage and showcase her talent to Sarah’s unwavering belief in her abilities.Sarah, beaming with pride, reassured her friend that she had always possessed the courage within her,and all she needed was someone to believe in her.
