I went to the gym around noon and worked out for an hour. When I stopped by the bakker y to pick up some bread for dinner, I discovered I didn't have my wallet with me. I went home, but IT wasn't there either than I remembered. I had had IT with me on the golf course the day before. I had two hundred dollars in IT, my VISA card and my driver's license. I decided to go back to the golf course and try to get my wallet back. I needed to fill up the car with gas to get to the course, but luckily I had a bank card at home. When I finally got there, I asked around the changing room, but no one had seen IT. Then I asked the people in the restaurant, and they didn't have IT either. My last chance was the kids outside who washed the golf cards, and they told me one of the workers found IT when he was cutting the grass in the morning, I offered to treat the guy to a round of golf, but he said he plays there for free anyway. Finally, he said, if I came back, I could buy him a beer. I told him he had a deal. I almost had a complete disaster yesterday, but I just missed IT. Kids enjoy watching anything so long as there's colour and movement, but every parent knows there are differences between shows.Below are a few educational ones that can be highly recommended.
Ask the StoryBots
Each week these five lovely robots have to research a question asked by a real-life child, such as “Why can't I eat sweets all the time?” and “Why is the sky blue?” The answers are offered by some of the biggest stars in the world in a mix of animation and live action. The best thing about the show is the funny songs about planets and animals.
The Magic School Bus Rides Again
Schoolteacher Ms Frizzle shows her class the wonders of science in a special way.The school bus can take any form, and the kids can have adventures in space,in the human body, and inside the Internet, and still be back in time for the final bell. The parents have no idea what goes on in these classes.
True and the Rainbow Kingdom
True is a great heroine with cleverness and the special ability to activate wishes from the Wishing Tree.Together with her cat friend Bartleby, she helps the colourful citizens of the Rainbow Kingdom deal with their problems.
Bluey
Bluey and Bingo are little girl dogs. The show is about nothing more than the games they play with their parents. These games are simple things like climbing Mount Mumandad, keeping a balloon in the air,or acting restaurant owners or old ladies. The patient dad Bandit is always willing to make his kids laugh. With so many ideas for make-believe games to play at home,it's the show we really need right now.

In 17th-century Europe,it was unheard of for a woman to travel by herself, but that didn't stop Maria Sibylla Merian. In 1699,she and her 21-year-old daughter Dorothea sailed from Amsterdam to Surinam in South America. The three-month voyage was dangerous but she was determined to go.Besides, she was on a bold mission. She would be the first person to go to a foreign country to study and paint insects directly from nature.
When they arrived in Surinam,Maria and Dorothea started working.Day after day, they took their painting materials into the hot, humid rainforest to collect and draw insects and plants.Artists had never done such a thing before.Still life painters drew from dead specimens (标本).But Merian had always been interested in painting living animals and plants, and her favourite subjects were insects.
In the rainforest, she climbed high to study and collect insects. She had trees cut down so she could see what lived at the top level of the forest more than a hundred feet overhead.Merian combined both art and science in her work.A skilled observer, she kept detailed notes.
Merian planned to stay in Surinam for five years, painting and collecting insects and plants that Europeans had never seen. She learnt about the medicinal plants of the area and expanded her interest to spiders, birds, lizards and snakes. She planned to publish a book of her new work on her return to Amsterdam.
After two years, she had to leave Surinam. The heat was unbearable and she was ill with malaria. But she had more than enough material for a book.Maria and Dorothea sailed back to Amsterdam with many paintings and specimens—butterflies preserved in brandy, bottles with crocodiles and snakes, lizards' eggs and boxes of pressed insects.
Four years later,in 1705,Merian published the book for which she is best known,Metamorphosis of the Insects of Surinam. The paintings of insects and plants in their natural habitats transformed scientific illustration and advanced the scientific study of insects.

The question of audience behavior during live performances has long troubled cultural institutions.Recently, this issue has emerged in the classical music world, focusing on mobile phone use at concerts.
The debate was sparked when tenor Ian Bostridge paused a performance in Birmingham, disturbed by audience members recording him.He later learned that he was out of line with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra's (CBSO) policy, which allows photography and short video clips.Bostridge's supporters flooded the orchestra with complaints about the policy. The CBSO's management promised to clarify and refine but not withdraw it.
The CBSO is not alone in viewing mobile phones as potential assets in attracting younger, diverse audiences. The English National Opera encourages patrons to share photos of curtain calls, while other venues (举办地),like London's Wigmore Hall and Royal Opera House, enforce strict no-recording policies. In contrast,Manchester's Bridgewater Hall adopts a flexible approach, consulting musicians for input on policies, except for classical concerts.
The problems for performers are clear—not only distraction,as in Bostridge's case, but being caught on the blink,or on a bad day.But even so they are not all against the mobile phone. The violinist Esther Abrami, who has built large followings online, recently said that tagging felt like the modern equivalent of getting flowers after a performance.
On the audience side, the argument rests largely on the belief that phones are part of the lifestyle of young people, who are allowed to use them at other cultural events. In live comedy, however, there is a general understanding that it is in nobody's interest for jokes to spread online before the end of a run.
While it is undesirable for classical concerts to become mere selfie sessions, where recording rights overshadow the experience of listening and watching, phones are not going away. The viral potential they offer is crucial for the marketing strategies of ambitious cultural venues.Finding limits based on general agreement is going to be part of their future.
28.What sparked the debate about mobile phone use at concerts?
A.The interruption of a performance.
B.A video clip of a concert.

Studying literature allows us to explore universal truths, which may deliver a lifetime sense of well-being.However,such benefits were sadly not enough to persuade Sheffield Hallam University to continue to offer an English literature degree to undergraduates.Due to falling demand for arts and humanities courses, the university is ceasing the course. It follows a similar move by the University of Cumbria last year and cuts to humanities funding elsewhere.
This decline is partly caused by the increasing commercialization of higher education, which values degrees based on job prospects and starting salaries. With dramatically increasing graduates owing over £100,000 in student loans,it is understandable that young people from lower-income backgrounds might think twice about taking a non-vocational (非职业类的) course.Applications for English studies have fallen steadily since 2012,when the tuition fees rose to £9,000.
Meanwhile, supposedly “dead end” university courses — those which fail to deliver an instant graduate reward in the job market—are coming under increasingly aggressive inspection. This year, the Office for Students set out plans to remove funding for “low quality” courses, defined as those where less than 60% of participants go into good jobs or further study soon after graduating.
The overall approach is both wrong-headed and short-sighted.As Mr Graham points out,the arts and entertainment industry has become one of the few booming areas of the economy in which Britain can claim to be world-leading.Additionally,judging the worth of a course solely by labor market outcomes ignores other important values, such as personal growth and cultural contribution.
After a decade of marketisation,a seriously practical worldview is beginning to sweep over England's higher education sector. But the inner quality and worth of a course cannot be fairly judged by reference to employment statistics and labour market outcomes.Sheffield Hallam's decision must be a wake-up call for those concerned to preserve the future of the arts and humanities in our universities.
32.Why did Sheffield Hallam University cease its English literature course?
A.A lack of qualified teachers.
B.Decreased need for arts and humanities.
C.Poor feedback about the program.
D.Rising interest in vocational courses.
根据第一段中的“Due to falling demand for arts and humanities courses, the university is ceasing the course.”
33.Which factor has discouraged students from applying for humanities degrees?
A.No funding from the government.
B.High tuition fees and student loan debt.
C.A rise in competitive vocational programs.
D.A barrier to personal growth.
根据第二段中的“With dramatically increasing graduates owing over...when the tuition fees rose to £9,000.”
34.What is the author's attitude to the trend of reducing humanities courses in universities?
A.Critical. B.Supportive.
C.Neutral. D.Unconcerned.
答案:A
根据倒数第二段中的“The overall approach is both wrong-headed and short-sighted.”以及尾段中的“But the inner quality and worth of a course cannot be fairly judged by reference to employment statistics and labour market outcomes.” 故选A项。
35.Which of following is a suitable title for the text?
A.Higher Education Industry:A Heated Game
B.Major Adjustment Policy:A Wake-up Call
C.Arts and Humanities:A Must-keep Program
D.Vocation and Commercialization:A Focused Trend
通读全文,尤其根据尾段中的“Sheffield Hallam's decision must be a wake-up call for those concerned to preserve the future of the arts and humanities in our universities.”

When I was very young,my parents and I moved from China to the United States because my father was appointed as manager of the American branch. At first, everything seemed strange and overwhelming. The language barrier was the toughest part, but slowly,I adapted to my new surroundings and became fluent in English.School became easier, friends were made, and life in America started to feel like being at home.
However,my parents had different ideas. They insisted that we speak Chinese at home. They even went as far as to teach me Chinese characters and make me read classic Chinese literature.I remember spending long hours every weekend practicing writing characters,my hand cramping (抽筋) from the effort. My parents would quiz me on my vocabulary, and I'd have to recite poems and passages from ancient texts. At the time,I couldn't understand why they were so determined about it.I often resisted, frustrated by the difficulty and wondering why I had to hold onto something that seemed irrelevant to my life in the US.
My father would patiently explain,“Although we're living in the US,we mustn't forget our roots. Our language is a part of who we are.” Despite his explanations,my teenage mind was too stubborn to appreciate his wisdom. He would sit with me,showing me the strokes (笔画) of each character, explaining their meanings, and sharing stories about our ancestors. His voice was calm and encouraging, even when I grew impatient and wanted to give up.“These characters carry our history,” he would say.“They tell the story of where we come from.”
As I grew older,my perspective started to shift. The more I learned about my heritage and our family's history, the more I began to value the efforts my parents had made to keep our culture alive.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

Back in the US,I was determined to promote the Chinese language.Inspired by my trip,I started a Chinese culture club at school, where students could learn about Chinese traditions, history, and language.I organized cultural events, like Chinese New Year celebrations and writing workshops, which attracted a diverse group of students. My efforts were met with enthusiasm, and the club grew rapidly.Through these activities,I aimed to create a sense of appreciation and respect for Chinese culture, ensuring that it remained a lively part of our multicultural society.
