There was a time when the term “camping” was equal to journeying into the wilderness and staying away from the city. Now, on weekend afternoons, it’s common to see people resting in camping chairs or in tents in urban parks.
Without the need for long trips or heavy equipment, urban camping is redefining how urban residents engage with nature — right in urban green spaces. There, the charm of the wild and the convenience of the city are no longer an either-or choice, but a harmonious balance that defines a new urban lifestyle.
“When I bought this expensive but durable equipment about 10 years ago, my parents said I was crazy because we could never spare so many weekends to drive out of the city for camping,” 25-year-old Beijing resident Chen Linjun told Beijing Review. “Now we enjoy about two to three camping nights every month in Nanyuan Forest Wetland Park in Beijing’s Fengtai District, which is only a 15-minute drive from our place and home to vast grasslands.”
“As an enthusiastic camper, I can confirm that a decade ago, people didn’t camp out in urban parks — there weren’t so many parks back then, either,” said Chen. “At that time, we Beijing campers would drive long hours to places in Hebei Province or Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, where conditions were better for camping. Now, you see people camping everywhere in Beijing’s parks. What used to be a niche (小众的) hobby has now become a popular pastime.”
Chen’s observation is supported by the growth of the camping economy and strategic adjustments within the camping and outdoor industries. The core market consists of traditional, experienced or regular camping enthusiasts, who provide a stable foundation of revenue and profit for the camping industry.
4. What is a feature of urban camping?
A. It is always linked with long trips.
B. It requires expensive heavy equipment.
C. It allows residents to stay away from the city.
D. It combines wild charm with urban convenience.
5. What was Chen’s parents’ attitude to his purchasing camping equipment?
A. Tolerant. B. Supportive. C. Critical. D. Unclear.
6. What did Beijing campers tend to do a decade ago?
A. Spend little money on camping.
B. Spare no efforts to find urban parks.
C. Camp everywhere in Beijing’s parks.
D. Choose camping places out of Beijing.
7. From which is the text most probably taken?
A. A travel guide. B. A news report.
C. A geography textbook. D. A blog on traditional culture.

Nowadays, increasingly large numbers of users go to AI models for personal advice and connections. These personal uses take advantage of the illusion (错觉) that the models can actually care about people.
AI may care about you by being constantly available and responsive. But serious care by parents, good friends, responsible health professionals, and people in general has a strong emotional component. Care is not just a belief, but also a feeling that you have about people, ranging from concern for a friend’s health to the intense love for a romantic partner or family member. But AI just pretends to have such feelings.
AI models seem to understand emotions because they have been trained on billions of sources that include psychology textbooks, journal articles, and novels about human emotions. They can recognize situations such as becoming a parent and falling in love romantically, and they can appraise these situations as satisfying people’s goals and thereby making them happy. But they cannot capture the physiological dimensions of emotion because they completely lack the relevant physiological changes.
Without the crucially relevant physiology, AI models can only fake (伪造) emotions such as caring about people. They may seem empathic by saying “I know how you feel”, but such empathy is fake because they have no experience of emotions. Such sentences can mislead people into thinking they have found a new friend and that they don’t have to pursue the more complex and variable social relationships with people who actually care about them. The social cost of the illusion of AI care runs much deeper when people go for the easy agreement and support of AI models.
I agree with AI researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio that the new technology is both powerful and dangerous, and therefore requires strict government regulation (监管). I hope that such regulation will include limits on the ability of AI models to pretend to care about people and thereby lead them to interactions that they mistake for friendship, love, and compassion.
8. What does the author say about AI?
A. It doesn’t respond constantly.
B. It lacks a feeling about people.
C. It isn’t as available as humans.
D. It is unwilling to show empathy.
9. What does the underlined word “appraise” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Mistake. B. Reject. C. Evaluate. D. Adjust.
10. What is a result of relying on AI for emotional connection?
A. It will make people more empathic. B. It causes people to fake emotions.
C. It may harm real human relationships. D. It eliminates people’s financial pressure.
11. Why does the author mention two AI researchers in the last paragraph?
A. To call for regulation on AI models.
B. To advocate for a ban on future AI.
C. To suggest improving AI performance.
D. To prove the unique power of AI care.

New research from the University of Southampton and the University of East Anglia (UEA) points to a major change in South Pacific climate conditions that began around 1,000 years ago. The study suggests this shift may have influenced where people chose to live, encouraging movement toward islands farther east as parts of the western region grew increasingly dry.
“The Pacific Islands today are under threat from a changing climate, but this is not the first time that the inhabitants of the region have had to adapt to a changing climate,” says Professor David Sear. “Our research suggests that beginning around 1,000 years ago, people in the region were effectively chasing (追逐) the rain eastwards to adapt to the stress placed on growing populations by a period of drier conditions in the western South Pacific.”
To uncover how conditions changed, the research team collected sediment (沉积物) cores from Western and Eastern Polynesia. These sediments contain plant waxes (蜡) — fatty layers left on leaves that preserve chemical clues about past climate. Detailed laboratory analysis of the waxes allowed scientists to determine whether conditions were wetter or drier when the plants were growing. The new data were combined with existing records from other locations across Polynesia and the wider Pacific. Using this comprehensive dataset, the team reconstructed changes in Pacific rainfall over the past 1,500 years.
Evidence indicates long-settled islands in Western Polynesia experienced gradual losses of rainfall. Meanwhile, more distant islands in Eastern Polynesia became wetter over time, potentially making them more appealing for settlement. Dr. Mark Peaple of the University of Southampton says, “Water is vital for drinking and agriculture. If this vital natural resource was running low, it’s logical that over time the population would follow it and settle down in areas with more reliable water security — even if this meant adventurous journeys across the ocean.”
Co-Principal Investigator Professor Manoj Joshi, also from UEA, says, “By better understanding how the climate of the South Pacific was affected by climate change in the past, we can build better predictions for how future climate change will affect the region.”
12. What do David Sear’s words suggest about ancient islanders?
A. Climate change forced them to migrate. B. They struggled in the eastern South Pacific.
C. The wetter conditions put pressure on them. D. They faced the issue of declining populations.
13. How did the research team determine the historical climate conditions?
A. By breaking down current green plants. B. By analyzing plant waxes in sediments.
C. By studying ancient tools and artworks. D. By examining islanders’ written records.
14. Why did ancient islanders move to wetter Eastern Polynesia?
A. Water was essential for their survival. B. There was less competition from animals.
C. The journeys across the ocean were smooth. D. They didn’t have to live on agriculture there.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Ancient Islanders Traveled a Lot B. Predicting Global Climate Change
C. Chasing the Rain Across the Pacific D. The Pacific Is Losing Its Appeal

Jeffery always kept to himself during the holiday season. His birthday was the day after Christmas and his mother and father helped him blow out the six candles on the cake.
Other than his group violin lesson with two other children, Jeffery didn’t spend much time with others. The neighborhood kids tried to include him, especially inviting him to go sledding (滑雪橇) on the big hill. But the thought of speed terrified Jeffery, and he always made an excuse or simply hid indoors. Soon, the other children stopped asking. Actually, Jeffery’s shiny red sled, a gift from last winter, sat untouched in the garage, a constant reminder of his fear.
The next evening after Jeffery’s birthday, his parents went out for a party, leaving him in the care of Aunt Penelope, who had recently moved in. Jeffery went into the living room and sat across from Aunt Penelope, who was sitting by the fireplace. Jeffery chose to read his book about weather patterns and found that there was really nothing more interesting than the weather.
Aunt Penelope approached him, handed him a small box and said, “It’s for you. A late birthday gift.” Jeffery quickly opened it. Inside the box was a small carving of a giraffe. Jeffery exclaimed, “It’s a beautiful gift! Thank you very much, Aunt Penelope. I wish I could give you something in return.”
Aunt Penelope coughed, “The best gift that you can give me is that you’ll take care of that giraffe and exercise him properly. I’m too old for such tasks these days, but it’s very important to exercise a giraffe, especially one who is as spirited and intelligent as Richard.”
Jeffery smiled, knowing the giraffe was called Richard. “I promise,” he said firmly.

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. A

词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“They can recognize situations such as becoming a parent and falling in love romantically, and they can appraise these situations as satisfying people’s goals and thereby making them happy.(它们能够识别诸如为人父母、坠入爱河等情境,并且能够appraise这些情境能够满足人们的目标,从而让人们感到快乐。)”可知,人工智能可以对情境做出判断,认为这些情况能满足人的需求并带来快乐,因此,画线词“appraise”意为“评估、判断”,与“evaluate”意思相近。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Such sentences can mislead people into thinking they have found a new friend and that they don’t have to pursue the more complex and variable social relationships with people who actually care about them.(这样的话语会误导人们,让他们以为自己找到了新朋友,从而不必与真正关心自己的人建立更复杂多变的社交关系。)”可知,依赖人工智能寻求情感联结可能会损害真实的人际关系。
【11题详解】

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. A 15. C

【答案】Dear Jenny,
I’m sorry to hear that you’ve been struggling to balance your club activities with schoolwork. I understand how overwhelming it can feel when you want to give your best to both.
Here are a few suggestions that might help. First, try creating a weekly schedule to block out specific times for study and club commitments. More importantly, remember it’s necessary to sometimes take a step back if you feel too stretched. Also, don’t hesitate to talk to your club leader or teachers, who can often offer flexibility or advice.
I’m sure you’ll find your rhythm soon. Keep me updated!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 Determined to keep his promise, Jeffery began his new duty the next morning. He placed Richard carefully in his coat pocket and ventured into the snowy backyard. At first, he simply walked in slow circles, whispering to Richard about the cold air and the shapes of clouds. Emboldened by his mission, he found his sled and decided to take Richard to explore the small hill. He took a deep breath and pushed himself down the small hill behind his house. The wind rushed past, but instead of panic, a shaky laugh bubbled up inside him.
From that day on, Jeffery made it a daily routine to go sledding with Richard. The small hill soon felt too familiar. One afternoon, with Richard secured in his pocket, Jeffery found himself standing at the foot of the big hill. The neighborhood kids were there sledding, too. After a moment’s hesitation, Jeffery placed his sled on the track they had made. As he pushed off, the familiar rush came, but it was mixed with excitement. At the bottom, one of the kids called out, “You made it! Let’s go sledding together.” Jeffery nodded, patting his pocket where Richard sat.
