As global water scarcity becomes an increasingly urgent concern, a promising solution emerges: the OnSprinkler, an intelligent irrigation system from Riou.
Localized Intelligence
The primary problem Riou aims to solve is the “uncontrolled” nature of traditional sprinklers (洒水装置), which often water sidewalks, driveways, or neighbors’ yards. The OnSprinkler introduces a level of surgical precision to the process.
·Virtual Boundary Setting: Using a dedicated mobile app, users can define the exact limits of their garden. The OnSprinkler then restricts its spray (喷洒) to only the specified areas.
·Modular Coverage: The system is delivered with two parts, allowing it to cover two distinct areas with unique settings right out of the box. However, the technology is scalable; a single system can be expanded to manage up to 10 different zones.
·Weather-Responsive Logic: To prevent the unnecessary watering that often occurs during rainstorms, the OnSprinkler is connected to live weather forecasts. If rain is predicted for a scheduled watering day, the system naturally cancels the session to save resources.
Sustainability Meets Practicality
Riou’s engineering choices reflect a commitment to both environmental impact and user convenience.
·Solar-Powered Autonomy: In a significant departure from many smart-home devices, the OnSprinkler is powered by integrated solar panels. This eliminates the need for external electrical outlets or complex wiring; users simply need to connect their water source and let the sun handle the rest.
·Portability (便携性): One of the system’s key advantages is its mobility. Because it is wireless and solar-powered, it can be easily moved between different areas of the property (up to 10 different zones) as the season or landscaping needs change.
Market Strategy
While high-end smart irrigation systems can often cost thousands of dollars, Riou is pursuing a pricing strategy to ensure wide adoption. The company intends for the OnSprinkler to be a very attractive product with a target price of approximately $300.
1. Why is the OnSprinkler special compared with traditional sprinklers?
A. It is designed by surgeons. B. It targets assigned zones precisely.
C. It is controlled by a computer. D. It is delivered with over ten parts.
2. How does the OnSprinkler react when it rains?
A. It stops working automatically. B. It reduces the amount of water.
C. It continues the watering session. D. It collects rainwater for irrigation.
3. Who are most probably attracted by the OnSprinkler?
A. Analyzers of rainfall data. B. Collectors of luxury items.
C. Advocates of green energy. D. Designers of indoor facilities.
【答案】1. B 2. A 3. C

Amy Hendricks is a doctor who has spent much of her career in Canada, practicing medicine in rural areas and caring for patients.
When she and her husband, Paul Davie, moved to Antigonish, Nova Scotia, she desired to build a medical clinic on the first floor of their new home. But they struggled to find the perfect plot of land. Davie recalled, “We spent 18 months looking around Antigonish to find a place where we feel the click.”
Once their estate agent eventually found their dream property at the foot of Sugarloaf Mountain, everything started coming together. They could put a medical clinic on the main floor and their living quarters right on top. Hendricks could still walk to the nearest hospital.
But after buying 46 acres of land, they quickly realized it was far more than two people needed. They didn’t want to see the land left unused. Then they connected with Colleen Cameron, the chair of the board of directors for Antigonish Affordable Housing Society (AAHS), and offered the organization the land. “It’s a dream for us not-for-profits to receive free land,” Cameron said. “That’s a big part of our expenses.”
Now, the forthcoming Sugarloaf development is being designed alongside the AAHS, The Naomi Society, an organization that helps domestic abuse survivors find transitional housing, and Inclusion Canada, which supports people with disabilities.
Each organization was given a parcel of land for development, right next door to the couple. Once complete, it will include housing for disabled individuals, affordable units by AAHS, and transitional housing for people escaping domestic violence.
“We have multiple nursing homes in Antigonish,” Hendricks said. “At the wages people earn from working in a nursing home, they can’t actually live in the community.” The couple said they also hope to one day add a daycare and corner store in the new community, and provide a walkable and communal area for everyone who lives nearby.
4. What does the text say about the couple’s dream property?
A. It wasn’t easy to find it. B. It was risky to donate it.
C. It freed Hendricks from work. D. It was dominated by a clinic.
5. Why did the couple consider donating land?
A. To express gratitude to Cameron.
B. To gain local recognition and support.
C. To ensure the land was used productively.
D. To preserve the natural ecology of the land.
6. How will the recipients deal with the free land?
A. By establishing a high-end hospital.
B. By selling it to make a big fortune.
C. By turning it into flats fit for the couple.
D. By building houses to help those in need.
7. What can we learn about the couple from the last paragraph?
A. They are socially responsible. B. They can’t afford community life.
C. They will rent out a nursing home. D. They live in harmony with workers.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. D 7. A

Critically endangered axolotls that were captive-bred (圈养) and then released into wetlands in Mexico City have lived surprisingly well, a new study has found, giving new hope to scientists trying to save the species from extinction.
Axolotls, found only in Lake Xochimilco, are one of the world’s most adored and threatened salamanders (蝾螈). Between 2017 and 2018, a team of researchers released and tracked 18 captive-bred axolotls in the ancient lake south of Mexico City, and in a nearby artificial wetland, to see how they would live in the wild.
“We didn’t expect that they would all survive,” said study lead author Alejandra Ramos. “And not only that, but the ones we recaptured had gained weight — they’re hunting now.”
Axolotls preserve juvenile features into adulthood, which contributes to their reputation as “incredibly cute” with their wide eyes, feathery gills and smile-shaped mouth. They can also regrow limbs and organs, gaining interest in the medical world, particularly in antiaging animal experimentation and cancer research. “If an axolotl loses an arm or leg, it grows back within two months, and it functions as before. The same with its eyes or brain,” said biologist Vania Mendoza.
Fascination with axolotls has led to a sharp rise in captivity, with most individuals of the species today being kept in homes and labs. Meanwhile, axolotl populations in the wild are estimated to have dropped by more than 80% in less than two decades. The species has been classed as critically endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2006. Axolotl numbers fell by 99% between 1998 and 2014 in Lake Xochimilco due to environmental degradation and a severe decline in water quality largely driven by waste water and chemical pollution from agriculture.
But the effort to recover the historic lake’s chinampas, a human-made canal ecosystem of raised beds first built by the Aztecs that have historically served as shelters for axolotls, has given the salamanders another chance. Researchers released 10 individuals, five male and five female, into a 500-square-meter restored chinampa shelter with equipment capable of improving water quality. In the artificial wetland, they released four pairs. Hopefully, more efforts will be made in the future.
8. Why did the researchers feel surprised about the released axolotls?
A. Their population declined. B. They became overweight rapidly.
C. They adapted well to the wild. D. Their hunting skills disappeared.
9. What makes axolotls appealing to the medical field?
A. Their captivity experiences. B. Their high cancer survival rate.
C. Their ability to regrow body parts. D. Their reputation for being adorable.
10. What do the figures in paragraph 5 indicate about axolotls?
A. Protection efforts prove ineffective. B. Their habitat worsened after 2014.
C. Fascination with them has dropped. D. Their wild populations are endangered.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To warn about the decline in axolotls’ population.
B. To inspire people to make efforts to save axolotls.
C. To show the impact of human activities on axolotls.
D. To explain why axolotls are popular with researchers.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. B

【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Axolotl numbers fell by 99% between 1998 and 2014 in Lake Xochimilco due to environmental degradation and a severe decline in water quality largely driven by waste water and chemical pollution from agriculture.(1998年至2014年间,由于环境退化以及主要由农业废水和化学污染导致的水质严重下降,霍奇米尔科湖中美西钝口螈的数量下降了99%)可知,这些数据表明美西钝口螈的野生种群处于濒危状态。

Creativity is beneficial but also hard to define. Creative workers have the ongoing challenge of having to quantify their value, while people in fields such as accounting or finance do not. One question that often comes up in creative circles is whether it’s better to be really great in one area or to be a jack-of-all-trades with skills in every discipline.
The old saying that a jack-of-all-trades is a master of none is out of date. These days, it’s possible for Jacks to become masters of many trades. In fields like art direction, photography and web design, it’s sometimes necessary to master multiple trades in order to create the right design solution for a project. Meanwhile, specialized knowledge is appealing to certain clients. Sometimes people worry that having too broad a scope (眼界) only muddles the vision of a project rather than being able to see it at ground level as well as the big picture.
The principles of lean design, which are revolutionizing project management in the design world, require that everyone in the company should know what’s going on in every department. This helps to facilitate success and stimulate innovation, which means that generalists sometimes have an advantage over those who are only able to communicate about one certain subject or discipline. Being able to see the big picture is becoming more and more important these days.
However, some argue that having too many moving parts or having too many people contribute to the conversation only clouds the process. Sometimes having specialists who work independently and can contribute something that no one else at the company can is the most efficient way to get work done and not have to deal with conflicting opinions.
It’s clear that there is a lot to be gained from both having more general knowledge about all design-related things and becoming an expert in a specific skill. Everyone has to make their own choices when it comes to their individual career.
12. What does the underlined word “muddles” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Broadens. B. Confuses. C. Affects. D. Identifies.
13. What is preferable based on the principles of lean design?
A. Working independently. B. Having a broad skill set.
C. Focusing on project details. D. Being an expert in a subject.
14. What may specialists bring to a company according to paragraph 4?
A. Enhanced work efficiency. B. More innovative proposals.
C. Greater mutual dependency. D. Lengthy work processes.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Trade Masters: Outdated or Popular?
B. How to Quantify the Value of Creativity
C. How to Be Great at a Variety of Creative Skills
D. Creative Workers: To Be Generalists or Specialists?
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文探讨创意领域中通才与专才的职业路径选择。
【12题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“Sometimes people worry that having too broad a scope (眼界) only muddles the vision of a project rather than being able to see it at ground level as well as the big picture.(人们有时担心眼界过宽只会muddles项目的规划思路,无法兼顾实际细节和全局视野。)”可知,划线词下文说无法兼顾细节和全局,说明眼界太宽会打乱、混淆项目思路,故划线词muddle意为 “扰乱、使糊涂”,对应Confuses。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The principles of lean design, which are revolutionizing project management in the design world, require that everyone in the company should know what’s going on in every department. This helps to facilitate success and stimulate innovation, which means that generalists sometimes have an advantage over those who are only able to communicate about one certain subject or discipline.(精益设计原则正彻底变革设计领域的项目管理模式,它要求公司里的每位员工都必须了解各个部门的工作进展。这一做法有助于推动事业成功、激发创新;这也意味着,通才有时比那些只会单一领域、单一学科沟通的专才更具优势。)”可知,精益设计原则要求员工了解各部门情况,这使得通才(拥有广泛技能的人)比单一领域专家更有优势。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Sometimes having specialists who work independently and can contribute something that no one else at the company can is the most efficient way to get work done.(有时候,拥有能够独立工作、且能做出公司里其他人都无法企及贡献的专业人才,才是最高效的工作完成方式。)”可知,专业人才能提高工作效率。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第一段“One question that often comes up in creative circles is whether it’s better to be really great in one area or to be a jack-of-all-trades with skills in every discipline.(在创意领域,人们经常会探讨一个问题:是把一个领域做到极致更好,还是做样样都会、涉猎广泛的多面手更好。)”可知,本文主要探讨创意领域中通才与专才的职业路径选择。D项“创意工作者:做通才还是做专家?”是合适的标题。

We all have one big goal, but somehow, between emails, meetings, and doomscrolling, it keeps getting pushed to “tomorrow”. ____16____. The idea is to spend 90 minutes for 90 days on 1 goal. It’s a productivity strategy designed to cut through the chaos and help you finally make progress.
Research shows that sticking with a new behavior — especially as part of your morning routine — can make it easier to turn into a lasting habit. Working on a project for 90 days straight helps you build the momentum (动力) you need to keep going. ____17____. Concentrating deeply for 90 minutes without distractions (干扰) allows your brain to become fully devoted to the task and enter a flow state of heightened focus and attention.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a remote town of India, Raghunath Mehta’s brick kiln (砖窑), established by his father, had long been a symbol of trust in the region. For decades, its success was built not on risky deals, but on an unshakable reputation for honesty. Raghunath’s father had often said, “Our bricks are strong because our word is stronger. This principle, inscribed (题写) on the office wall, guided every deal.
However, recent years had brought unforeseen challenges. A major construction project in a neighboring town collapsed, leaving several local businesses, including Raghunath’s, struggling to receive new orders. Gradually, the kiln’s production slowed and some workers had to be laid off. Raghunath spent sleepless nights thinking about how to cut down on expenses and help the kiln pull through.
One quiet afternoon, as Raghunath was reviewing his accounts in the office, a young man named Shyamlal hesitantly entered. Dressed simply, he held a piece of old paper in his trembling hands. It was a receipt dated 1968, signed by Raghunath’s father. But it was not for bricks. It acknowledged a loan of ¥150 that Shyamlal’s father had made to Raghunath’s father when the kiln had been faced with a financial crisis. On that receipt, in faded (褪色) ink, was a handwritten note: “This faith shall be repaid in bricks whenever needed.” Decades had passed, and Shyamlal’s father had never been able to reclaim this promise until now. Honoring it would mean delivering ten thousand bricks, worth over ¥11,550 at current market price.
Shyamlal’s voice was filled with worry, and the writing was nearly invisible. He knew of the kiln’s struggles but desperately needed those bricks to build a home in his village. Raghunath took the weathered receipt. He did not need to examine it carefully; he remembered his father telling the story of this very loan. Yet, fulfilling it now seemed difficult. If he did so, it would put additional financial pressure on the kiln.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, Raghunath’s eyes fell on the words on the wall.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Moved by Raghunath’s integrity, Shyamlal shared the story far and wide.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Just then, Raghunath’s eyes fell on the words on the wall. He was transported back to moments when his father had embodied that principle, speaking of how a single promise could be the pillar of a lifelong reputation. He looked into Shyamlal’s eyes and said firmly, “Your bricks will be delivered within ten days.” Before Shyamlal left, relieved, Raghunath requested his village address. Though his stock was low and funds were tighter than ever, Raghunath mobilized his remaining workers and resources. Within ten days, ten thousand bricks were transported to Shyamlal’s village.
Moved by Raghunath’s integrity, Shyamlal shared the story far and wide. The contractor for a new local school project, impressed by such rare honesty, personally paid a visit to Raghunath with a large, advance-paid order, stating he wanted to work with a man of principle. Villagers like Shyamlal planning to build houses also chose to buy bricks from Raghunath. This single act of keeping the promise reignited the kiln’s operations, slowly reviving the business and proving that integrity is the most durable foundation for any enterprise.

Working on a project for 90 days straight helps you build the momentum (动力) you need to keep going. ____17____. Concentrating deeply for 90 minutes without distractions (干扰) allows your brain to become fully devoted to the task and enter a flow state of heightened focus and attention.

No multitasking, just you and your most important task. One goal: ____19____. Whether it’s launching a passion or writing a book, you pick one goal that really matters to you. Just one.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Just then, Raghunath’s eyes fell on the words on the wall.

Moved by Raghunath’s integrity, Shyamlal shared the story far and wide.
