As we walk along the narrow path to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the thin air makes us pause to rest often. But soon, we see something amazing: a group of Tibetan antelopes with white fur, eating quietly on the grassland. This is not a mere sightseeing trip — our mission is to study these endangered creatures and witness the untiring (不懈的) efforts to safeguard them.
Native to the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, Tibetan antelopes are a symbol of the region’s fragile ecosystem. Yet their existence hangs by a thread. In the 1990s, illegal poaching for their soft wool, which could be sold at high prices. What’s worse, new roads and buildings destroyed their living habitats, and climate change brought more droughts. In just 20 years, their number dropped by over 70%, and they almost died out.
Our guide, Zhaxi, a lifelong resident of Changtang, embodies the spirit of conservation. He has worked as a protector at the Changtang National Nature Reserve for more than 30 years. Every day, he walks across the big grasslands, facing cold weather and difficult land to stop hunters. “These antelopes are not just animals — they are part of the plateau’s soul,” he says firmly. “If we lose them, the plateau will be in trouble, and we will suffer too.”
Thanks to strict national laws, help from other countries, and the hard work of people like Zhaxi, things have gotten better. Illegal hunting has been greatly reduced, and now there are over 70,000 Tibetan antelopes. But Zhaxi warns us: “Climate change and human activities are still threats. Protecting wildlife is not an option — it’s our duty to future generations.”
4. Why did the writer go to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau?
A. To enjoy the beautiful scenery B. To study Tibetan antelopes and their protection
C. To meet the guide Zhaxi D. To build new roads in the area
5. What is the major threat that caused the sharp decline (下降) of Tibetan antelopes in the 1990s?
A. Climate change leading to droughts B. Habitat fragmentation from infrastructure
C. Illegal poaching for their valuable wool D. Competition for food with other wildlife
6. What can we infer from Zhaxi’s words?
A. Tibetan antelopes are not important to the plateau.
B. Protecting antelopes is necessary for the plateau’s balance.
C. Humans can live well without Tibetan antelopes.
D. The plateau’s environment is already perfect.
7. Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A. Tibetan antelopes can be found in many parts of China.
B. Illegal hunting is no longer a threat to Tibetan antelopes.
C. Zhaxi has spent over 30 years protecting Tibetan antelopes.
D. The number of Tibetan antelopes has dropped by 70% now.
One might expect that the ever-growing demands of the tourist trade would bring nothing but good for the countries that receive the holiday-makers. Indeed, a rosy picture is painted for the long-term future of the holiday industry. Every month sees the building of a new hotel somewhere. And every month another rock-bound Pacific island is advertised as ‘the last paradise on earth’.
However, the scale and speed of this growth seem set to destroy the very things tourists want to enjoy. Overcrowded beaches and the concrete jungles of endless hotels have begun to lose their appeal. Those countries with little experience of tourism can suffer most in a rush to make quick money. In recent years, Nepal’s forests, full of wildlife and rare flowers, were offered to tourists as one more untouched paradise, with the consequent destruction of precious trees and plants.
The people as well rapidly feel its effects. Farmland makes way for hotels, roads and airports; the old way of life goes. The one-time farmer is now the servant of some multinational organization; he is no longer his own master. Once it was his back that bore the pain; now it is his smile that is exploited.
Thankfully, the tourist industry is waking up to the responsibilities it has towards those countries that receive its customers. The protection of wildlife and the creation of national parks go hand in hand with tourist development and in fact obtain financial support from tourist companies. At the same time, tourists are being encouraged to respect not only the countryside they visit but also its people.
The way tourism is handled in the next ten years will decide its fate and that of the countries we all want to visit. Increased understanding in planning worldwide tourism can preserve the market for these companies. If not, in a few years’ time the very things that attract tourists now may well have been destroyed.

9. The example of Nepal is used in Paragraph 2 to show that ________.
A. tourist advertisements are usually dishonest and misleading
B. untouched natural paradises are very popular among tourists
C. rapid tourism development may damage natural resources
D. Nepal is rich in wildlife and rare flowers
10. What is the main impact of tourism on farmers based on the text?
A. Increased opportunities. B. Improved work-life balance.
C. Transformed livelihood. D. Enhanced social status.
11. What may determine the future of tourism according to the text?
A. The promotion of cultural diversity. B. The exploration of new destinations.

Rosie, a three-year-old black Labrador dog, can do something no person in the world is able to do. She smells four containers of urine (尿液) samples and correctly chooses the one that belongs to a National Health Service patient with bladder (膀胱) cancer. To show it is not just by accident, Rosie’s trainers keep changing the order of the containers. Again and again, the dog finds the cancer sample correctly.
Scientists believe this ability could be the beginning of a major change in how we detect cancer. But it has been difficult for researchers to find a way to use this on a large scale in real-world medical settings. It would simply not be practical for the health service to let a group of dogs smell patients in busy hospital waiting rooms.
Now, however, technology has offered an answer. Dr Andreas Mershin, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has worked with the organization Medical Detection Dogs to create an electronic nose, or “e-nose”. This device was developed by training artificial intelligence to copy the way dogs react to the smelly chemicals found in urine. Once the machine learns this, it can also “smell” urine samples by detecting those same tiny chemicals in the air.
The e-nose is now being tested on more than 500 urine samples from patients at Milton Keynes University Hospital, to see if it is as accurate as the dogs. Dr Mershin hopes it can be approved as a medical tool in hospitals within two years. He also said the technology could one day even be built into smartphones.
The team of scientists and dog trainers works closely with local doctors, who are very hopeful about what the e-nose could achieve. They believe it could lead to tests that do not require any cutting or entering the body. Such tests would be especially important for illnesses where people often delay getting checked because they feel embarrassed, waiting until they experience troubling symptoms.
12. What is the limitation of using dogs for cancer detection?
A. They are not accurate enough. B. They are hard to use widely.
C. They are too expensive to train. D. They are too difficult to control.
13. What can we infer about the e-nose?
A. It may be used in phones. B. It has been applied in treatment.
C. It works better than trained dogs. D. It can only detect chemicals in urine.
14. What will be possibly discussed in the following paragraph?
A. Further device tests. B. Better ways to train Rosie.
C. Causes of bladder cancer. D. Methods of keeping healthy.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. New Ways to Train Working Dogs. B. Dogs with Special Smelling Skills.
C. An AI Device for Cancer Detection. D. Traditional Tools for Bladder Cancer.

It was July, the final day of the school year. My class of six-year-old students was eagerly looking forward to their summer break. To make the day more cheerful, I arranged for some balloons to be delivered, yet for me, this vacation was a mix of happiness and sadness. I had recently moved to this city and didn’t have enough money to take a flight home to be with my father. He was longing for me deeply, since this was his first summer without my company.
As I turned off the light before leaving, I spotted the balloons by the window.
Not knowing what to do with them, I gathered the thirteen strings and put them in the backseat of my car. Their colorful colors brightened my mood, and thankfully, I no longer felt so isolated.
Since I was still unfamiliar with the city, I chose to take a drive and before long, I found myself driving along a winding road where the trees overhead covered each other. The branches reminded me of two friends reaching out to welcome one another. Soon, a nursing home came into view. The place had an air of being forgotten, and I noticed a man sitting by himself in the shadow outside.
I suddenly felt an urge to drive in. However, the balloons in my backseat were blocking my sight — at that moment, I realized how to use them. I got out, took hold of one of the strings, waved at the man, and he smiled back. He introduced himself as Daniel, and he was roughly the same age as my father. As I gave him the balloon, he beamed and said, “Thanks. This adds a bit of brightness to my life.” As he fastened it to his chair, he appeared more joyful than when I first saw him. So I replied with a smile, “You’re welcome, Daniel. Maybe we’ll meet again one day.’
To my surprise, he responded, “Maybe, but it’s not likely. People are always invited to visit, but they seldom show up.” What he said forced me to pull an old chair closer to him. We began chatting about our lives, and the sound of his voice constantly brought my father to mind. I had imagined that having a conversation with a stranger would be dull. But it wasn’t; instead, it was enlightening — I had been feeling lonely, Daniel had felt the same, and so had the other residents of the nursing home.
注意:(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;(2) 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置 作答。

【答案】12. B 13. A 14. A 15. C
根据第二段“But it has been difficult for researchers to find a way to use this on a large scale in real-world medical settings(但研究人员一直很难找到一种方法,将这项技术大规模应用于现实医疗场景中。)”可知,用狗狗检测癌症的局限性是难以大规模应用于现实医疗场景。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“He also said the technology could one day even be built into smartphones.(他还表示,这项技术有朝一日甚至能被内置到智能手机中。)”可知,关于电子鼻我们能推断出未来可能应用在手机上。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“The e-nose is now being tested on more than 500 urine samples from patients at Milton Keynes University Hospital, to see if it is as accurate as the dogs. Dr Mershin hopes it can be approved as a medical tool in hospitals within two years.(这款电子鼻目前正在米尔顿凯恩斯大学医院,对500多份患者尿液样本进行测试,以此检验它是否能达到和嗅探犬一样的准确率。默欣博士希望它能在两年内获批,成为医院的正规医疗设备。)”可知,文章末尾讲电子鼻正在测试、等待获批医用,按照行文逻辑,下文最可能继续介绍设备的进一步测试与完善。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第三段“Dr Andreas Mershin, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has worked with the organization Medical Detection Dogs to create an electronic nose, or ‘e-nose’.(麻省理工学院的安德烈亚斯・默欣博士与医疗探测犬组织合作,研发出了一款电子鼻。)”

A Remarkable Second-hand Item Exchange
Last Friday witnessed an educational and vibrant activity titled “A Remarkable Second-hand Item Exchange”, which turned out to be a great success and was well received by all students and teachers.
What I brought for exchange was a collection of English novels, which my dad sent as my 10th birthday gift. Particularly themed on English classics such as Little Women, Wuthering Heights and Gone with the Wind, this collection had guided me to explore the mysterious world of English literature. In return, I received an electronic watch with eye-catching bright red.

七、读后续写
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Then I remembered the other twelve balloons in the backseat.

Over the next six months, I visited Daniel often.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Then I remembered the other twelve balloons in the backseat. When I asked if I could bring balloons inside, Daniel nodded, “It’s been a while since something cheerful came through the door.” Hearing this, I jogged to the car, gathered the strings from the backseat and the balloons were immediately freed, floating gloriously in the air. One by one, I handed them out to the residents inside, whose faces softened and even brightened up as the colors reached them. I could hear it, this sudden rustle of joy.
Over the next six months, I visited Daniel often. Sometimes with balloons, sometimes with drawings my students made, our visits always began in the shade outside. Though he never said so, I could tell he waited for me. I did too for his voice, low and soft, was so much like Dad’s. I was grateful for the silence we shared when words weren’t needed. Through these visits, the city felt less foreign, but more like home. When I made it back home some day, I would tell Dad how a man brought him back to me, and how a handful of balloons, unexpectedly, lit up everything.
