Inside the hall, the door was shut, and the key lay on the glass stand. Poor Alice, who was about one foot high after taking some drink, found a cake on the floor. She went up and soon ate all the cake.
“How strange! How tall I am!” said Alice. She looked down at her feet — they seemed so far off. In fact, she was now over nine feet high, which meant she still couldn’t get through the door. She sat down, and had a good cry till there was a large pool all round her.
Suddenly, she heard the sound of feet not far off. It was the Rabbit that had come back, with a fan in his hand. Alice felt so in need of help from someone, that when he came near, she called out, “If you please, sir...” The Rabbit started as if shot, dropped the fan and ran off as fast as possible.
Alice picked up the fan and as the hall was hot, she fanned herself. “Dear, dear! How strange all things are today! I do wish to get out of the hall!” “I’m tired of this place!” she said.
Then she noticed herself in the glass — she was now not more than two feet high and still shrinking quite fast. That was the fan! She realized this and dropped it at once, or she would shrink to the size of an ant soon.
Alice was in a sad fear at the quick change. “Things are worse,” said the poor girl, “I was never so small as this. How can I get out?” As she said these words, she lost her footsteps and was up to her chin (下巴) in salt water — her own tears.
Just then Alice noticed a mouse swimming towards her.
“Will it be useful now to speak to this mouse? All things are so strange here. I should think maybe it can talk. At least there’s no harm to try.” So she swam up.

Humpback whales (座头鲸) are large sea mammals. They spend summers eating food in cold waters and then travel to warm tropical areas in winter to have babies. These warm areas are called breeding grounds (繁殖地). These breeding grounds are very important for the whales, because they have the right temperature and few predators like killer whales. This is especially good for baby whales that don’t have much fat under their skin and can’t protect themselves well.
Now, the earth is getting warmer and warmer, and this is mainly caused by human activities, such as driving cars, running factories, and using coal, oil and gas for energy. Global warming also makes the ocean water warmer. Humpback whales need water with a temperature between 21°C and 28°C to have babies. Because this suitable temperature helps baby whales grow quickly and stay healthy. If the ocean water gets warmer than this, the whales may have to move to new breeding grounds, but this is hard for them because they like returning to their favorite places every year.
To predict what will happen to humpback whales in the future, scientists did a special project with the help of computer models. First, they collected data (数据) about the current ocean temperature and how it has changed in recent years in the areas where whales breed. Then, they used computers to predict how the ocean surface temperature might change by the year 2100. They also tested two different situations: One is that people continue to use lots of fossil fuels, and the other is that people turn to clean energy like solar power.
The results of the project are very worrying. If people keep using lots of fossil fuels, about 67% of the breeding areas will become too warm, which will affect over half of the world’s humpback whales. Even with clean energy, about 35% of the breeding areas may still get too warm. Therefore, we must take action right now to protect these beautiful sea mammals and their breeding grounds
56.Why are breeding grounds important for humpback whales?

58.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How scientists did the research on whales
B.When people should start to use clean energy
C.What computers can do to protect the whales
D.Why the ocean temperature is becoming higher.
59.What does the writer think of the future of humpback whales?
A.Clear. B.Serious. C.Cheerful. D.Hopeless
60.What may be written in the following text?

C.The living areas of humpback whales. D.The eating habits of humpback whales.

On October 9, Hurricane Milton became the fifth hurricane (飓风) in 2024 to make landfall in the mainland United States. Thousands of people were ordered to leave Florida’s west coast before Hurricane Milton hit. Storms like this happen more often and get stronger. So weather experts are working hard to forecast (预测) where they will go and follow their paths. AI is playing an important role in that process.
For years, weather experts have built digital (数字) models of storms. These models can take hours to produce new forecasts. However, AI models use huge amounts of information from storms in the past to notice repeating patterns. And they tell people about storms correctly within seconds, and even days before storms hit.
Matt Lanza is a weather expert. He works in Houston, Texas. In the week before Hurricane Milton made landfall, Lanza said, “The old models correctly forecast where in Florida the storm would hit. But AI models probably forecast the possible result 12 to 18 hours earlier. Those hours can make a big difference to people preparing for storm damage.”
The AI program GraphCast said that Hurricane Beryl would hit Texas on July 8. A traditional model said it would hit Mexico. GraphCast was correct. The team that made it won a prize.
In September, the AI program AIFS forecast Hurricane Francine’s path as the storm hit Louisiana. Its correctness made Lanza feel sure to tell his viewers in Texas that the storm likely wouldn’t be a problem for them.
The National Hurricane Center uses AI in its forecasting. It works well, but not perfectly. It’s hard for AI to forecast how strong a storm will be. So, weather experts still use other tools with AI. They don’t let AI do all the work.
61.What can we infer according to Paragraph 1?
A.Hurricanes are a growing concern. B.Hurricanes are less dangerous now.
C.AI can help make hurricanes weaker. D.People don’t need to worry about hurricanes.
62.What is different about the old models, compared to AI models?
A.They are easier to fix. B.They use more electricity.
C.They use less information. D.They take longer to make a forecast.
63.What can we know about AI models?
A.They were used before 2024. B.They replace human experts.
C.They help reduce storm damage. D.They are wrong more often than people.
64.Why don’t experts depend only on AI for storm forecasts?
A.Because there are things AI can’t do well. B.Because AI makes things seem worse than they are.
C.Because traditional methods are better sometimes. D.Because AI can’t get the latest information quickly.
65.What is the best title of the passage?
A.Developing AI models B.The influence of hurricanes
C.Forecasting with AI models D.The dangers of Hurricane Milton

A.They have lots of food B.They can help them swim faster
C.They are safe and warm D.They are cold ocean waters
57.How does proper temperature influence humpback whales?
A.It leads them to return to the ocean. B.It teaches them to protect themselves.
C.It allows them to move more quickly. D.It helps them to grow fast and healthily

【答案】61.A 62.D 63.C 64.A 65.C

61.第一段指出“Thousands of people were ordered to leave Florida’s west coast before Hurricane Milton hit. Storms like this happen more often and get stronger.”,说明飓风越来越频繁、越来越强,因此飓风是一个日益令人担忧的问题。
62.第二段指出传统模型“can take hours to produce new forecasts”,而AI模型“correctly within seconds”,所以区别是传统模型花费时间长。
63.第三段指出“But AI models probably forecast the possible result 12 to 18 hours earlier. Those hours can make a big difference to people preparing for storm damage.”说明AI有助于减少风暴带来的损失。
64.最后一段指出“It’s hard for AI to forecast how strong a storm will be. So, weather experts still use other tools with AI.”,说明AI有不擅长的事情(比如预测风暴强度)。
65.全文主要讲AI如何帮助预测飓风路径和结果,而不是单纯讲飓风本身或开发AI技术,因此“Forecasting with AI models”最合适。
