Hi everyone! In science class today, we watched a program called Sleeping in the Wild, and it was really interesting! It showed that animals sleep in many different ways. Some sleep almost the whole day, while others hardly sleep at all. I found these differences quite surprising. Which animal sleeping habit do you think is the most interesting?

Hi Olivia! I was most surprised by koalas! The program said they can sleep 18 to 22 hours a day, which is almost the whole day! At first, I thought they were just lazy animals. But then the program explained why. Koalas mainly eat eucalyptus leaves, and these leaves provide very little energy. Because of that, they need a lot of sleep to save energy and stay healthy. So actually, their long sleeping time is a way to survive. I didn’t expect that!

For me, sloths are the most amazing sleepers. They can sleep about 20 hours a day and spend most of their lives hanging from tree branches in tropical forests. The program explained that staying high in the trees helps them avoid predators on the ground. Even though sloths move very slowly, their lifestyle actually protects them and helps them survive in their environment. Pretty cool, right?

I think dolphins have the most unique sleeping habit. Unlike humans, they cannot fall into a deep sleep for a long time. Instead, only half of their brain sleeps at a time, while the other half stays awake. This way, they can keep swimming and come up to the surface to breathe. They even sleep with one eye open to watch for danger in the ocean. Nature really comes up with amazing solutions!

Last winter, something strange happened in Maple Ridge Town — the stars disappeared. Not just a few. All of them.
People first noticed it on a clear Monday night. The sky looked 65 dark. At first, residents thought it was thick clouds, but the weather report said the sky was perfectly clear.
The next night, the same thing happened. Children stood outside 66 the sky. “Where are they?” they asked. Even the brightest stars were gone.
Soon, the town became noisy with theories. Some blamed air pollution. Others thought a new factory light had covered the sky. A few joked that aliens stole the stars.
Seeing the 67 , the town organized a “Night Sky Investigation Team” of students and teachers. They checked pollution levels, which were normal. They drove to the hills to see if stars were visible from higher places — but 68 changed.
At last, a science teacher named Mr. Ray made a 69 discovery. A new shopping centre had recently installed extremely bright advertisements that lit up the entire sky. The lights were so strong they blocked the stars from view.
The town official quickly ordered the lights to be turned down after 8 p.m.
That night, the stars returned — first a few, then hundreds. People cheered from their windows. Students later created posters saying, “Less Light, More Stars,” 70 the town to use outdoor lights wisely.
The stars had not disappeared — they had only been hidden.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a famous novel written by Mark Twain. It was first p 71 in 1884 and is seen as one of the most important works in American literature. The novel tells the story of a boy named Huck Finn and his exciting journey along the Mississippi River.
Huck is a boy who loves freedom and dislikes the s 72 rules of society. At the beginning of the story, he feels unhappy with the life that others try to arrange for him. One day, he decides to run away and soon meets Jim, a man who has escaped from slavery (奴役). A 73 they come from very different backgrounds, they begin to travel together on a small raft down the river.
During their journey, Huck and Jim experience many adventures. They meet different kinds of people, face danger, and sometimes get into t 74 . However, the river also becomes a place where they feel free and safe. As they spend more time together, Huck slowly learns that Jim is not just a slave, but a kind, loyal, and caring friend.
The novel is not only about adventure. It also explores important ideas such as freedom, friendship, and doing what is right. Huck often feels confused because society tells him that helping Jim is w 75 . However, his heart tells him that protecting his friend is the right thing to do. In the end, Huck chooses to follow his own thoughts instead of simply obeying the rules.
One reason the book is so memorable is Mark Twain’s writing style. He uses humour and lively dialogue to describe life along the Mississippi River. His l 76 is simple and vivid, which makes the characters feel real and easy to understand.
Because of its meaningful themes and unforgettable characters, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is still w 77 read today. The novel encourages readers to think about fairness, courage, and the importance of treating others with kindness and respect.
D. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)(12分)
The Mystery Locker
①Every student at Riverwood School has a locker, but Mia’s locker is special. Not because of the stickers on the door or the bright blue paint inside — it is special because someone keeps leaving small surprises in it.
②The first gift appeared in September: a tiny paper star with a note, “Hope you smile today.” Mia looked around the hallway, but nobody acted differently. She thought it was a mistake and forgot about it.
③Two weeks later, she found a bookmark with a drawing of a cat. In October, she discovered a packet of hot chocolate. Each item was simple but thoughtful. Her friends joked that she had a “secret locker friend”. Mia liked the idea but still had no clue who it was.
④One rainy morning, Mia arrived at school feeling tired. When she opened her locker, she found a small card: “Rainy days can still be bright. Hang in there — things will get better soon.” There was also a tiny sunflower sticker. For some reason, these words warmed her heart more than the others.
⑤Mia started paying more attention. She noticed that every surprise appeared on days when she seemed stressed or quiet. Someone was watching — but kindly, not in a strange way.
⑥Before the winter holidays, Mia decided to leave a note inside her locker door: “To my secret friend, 82 ”
⑦After the break, she found a final note waiting for her: “You’re welcome. Sometimes people need a little light.”
⑧There was no name, but Mia no longer needed to know. She realized that small acts of kindness can change someone’s day — and that was the real mystery behind the locker.

To make the project better, I suggest we make a weekly plan so everyone knows their jobs clearly. I believe volunteering in the community will be very meaningful.
