The importance of biodiversity
What is biodiversity? You can think of it as a big family album (相册) that has photos of all the living things on the earth, from plants to animals, from fungi (真菌) to humans. The UN said that the biodiversity we see today is the result of 4.5 billion years of evolution (进化).
Biodiversity is a web of life in which all species (物种) have their role. It is important because we depend on nature for so many things. According to the UN, more than 1 billion people depend on forests for their living.
The loss (亏损) of biodiversity influences us directly. For example, if there are fewer animals that eat harmful insects, the insects will grow in number. This can harm our crops and make it hard for us to get enough food.
Biodiversity usually grows slowly, but it can drop fast. According to a 2016 report of the World Wildlife Fund (基金会), the number of vertebrate animals (脊椎动物) went down by 58 percent between 1970 and 2012. Some scientists said that by the end of the 21st century, 5 percent of species will die out.
________
While extinction (灭绝) is natural, human activities like pollution and growing food, have already changed the conditions of the land. About 85 percent of wetlands have gone away, according to the UN.
To help with the problem, the UN has asked the whole world to work together. In China, more than 300 endangered wildlife animals, including Asian elephants, have seen their numbers rise in 2025, said Xinhua.
“Ecological civilization (生态文明) plays a big part in Chinese direction,” Inger Andersen with the UNEP (联合国环境规划署) told Xinhua. “And we look forward to that direction forming a part of the global direction for an ecological balance (平衡) with our planet.”
22. Why is biodiversity important according to the passage?
A. Because it grows slowly but it can drop fast.
B. Because it is a big family album with photos of all the living things on the earth.
C. Because it plays an important role in protecting nature and supporting human life.
D. Because it is the result of 4.5 billion years of evolution.
23. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?
A. We should keep more animals to eat harmful insects.
B. The loss of biodiversity can lead to food problems.
C. Biodiversity has nothing to do with food production.
D. Biodiversity usually grows fast, but it can drop slowly.
24. Which of the following can be put in ________?
A. Calling the world to work together B. Protecting biodiversity in China
C. Keeping the balance of nature D. Reducing the humans’ activities
25. What can we learn from the text?
A. Biodiversity grows and drops at a similar speed.
B. Human activities like pollution have a bad influence on biodiversity.
C. The number of vertebrate animals has increased by 58% from 1970 to 2012.
D. In China, less than 300 endangered wildlife animals have seen their numbers rise in 2025.

In spring, some people wear T-shirts while others are in down (羽绒服) coats. It seems that people feel different temperatures on the same day. ____26____
In fact, people don’t feel air temperature directly. There are sensors (传感器) on our skin (皮肤) that can feel cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures. ____27____
When bodies are the same size, how much body fat we have can be different and influence how we feel temperatures. ____28____ This is because the fat under the skin helps keep heat, according to the website The Swaddle. For example, old people often feel colder than young people as the fat layer under the skin gets thinner with age.
Surprisingly, another reason is height. ____29____ Since most people’s hearts are about the same size, it takes more effort (力气) and time for the blood to move around in taller people. So taller people might feel colder, said the newsletter Mic.
Metabolism (新陈代谢) also influences how we feel temperatures. It shows how fast our bodies use energy. People with a higher metabolism always feel hotter than others. ____30____ For example, people with more muscles (肌肉) often feel warmer, according to Medicover Genetics.
A. Why does this happen?
B. The more body fat one has, the warmer he or she feels.
C. We need blood to move around our bodies to keep us warm.
D. These sensors are also found in our noses and other internal organs.

[1] It’s a great pity that the respected Mr. Zhang Xuefeng has passed away. His death teaches us a meaningful lesson: health comes first in life, especially heart health. It is widely considered a problem for the middle-aged and elderly, yet it has become a common health subject among teenagers as well. As middle school students, we are busy with heavy schoolwork every day, but we must remember to build up a strong and healthy body.
[2] Some medical experts have offered several practical suggestions for teenagers to keep fit and protect their heart effectively. Firstly, it is necessary to stick to a regular daily life. Staying up late for extra study or endless phone use does great harm to the physical condition. [4] Thirdly, forming healthy eating habits plays a key role in heart protection. We are supposed to increase the intake of fresh vegetables and fruits, and drink warm water rather than sweetened drinks. Fast food and food with too much salt are ②__________ to heart health, so we are advised to cut down the intake of such food as much as possible.
[5] What’s more, it is very important to learn to relax ③__________ properly. Too much pressure and long-term nervousness can also be bad for our physical health. When feeling tired or stressed out, we can listen to light music, communicate with close friends or family members timely. Keeping a positive and pleasant mood every day is also an excellent way to protect our heart.
[6] Health is always the most valuable way for every single person. Let’s take action immediately, develop healthy living habits and stick to them, so as to live a more energetic and happy life.

put out“扑灭”、give out“分发”均不符合语义。
“make a mess”是固定短语,意为“弄得一团糟”,made符合语境。

Core Abilities
Dear teachers and classmates,
Good morning. I’m very glad to give a speech here. As middle school students, we need to develop some important core abilities for the future.
In my opinion, lifelong learning and time management are the two most important core abilities we need now. Lifelong learning helps us keep up with the fast-changing world, while good time management lets us balance study and daily life well.
