“It was a pretty special house,” said Tragos, who ran away with her parents, her younger sister and their three dogs when the fire broke out on January 7th, 2025. All the teenager took with her was her high school diploma (毕业证书).
A few days after the fire, Tragos’s friend shared with her a video: a L. A.artist offering to create, for free, watercolor paintings of people’s homes before they were burnt. Tragos contacted the artist, Jordan Heber, asking if she could paint Tragos’s home.“I want to do it as a surprise to my family,” she wrote. Tragos sent a photo to Heber, who completed a painting of Tragos’s home in three days.“A home is more than just a house where we keep our things,” said Heber.
Heber works as a designer and paints in her free time, usually charging $300 to $400 for a house drawing. After the fire began, Heber kept thinking about how she could help. Seeing another local artist offering free house drawings, she was encouraged. “This will be my way to help,” said Heber.
She posted her offer on social media, and messages poured in. Heber has painted over fifty houses, including one for Jeremy Wineberg, whose family home was also destroyed.
“It was a place you never wanted to leave,” said Wineberg. When the fire came, he escaped with his two dogs, taking only a blanket. “Heber’s painting means the world to me. I’ve lost almost everything, but a piece like this—something that brings back what ‘home’ meant—gives me strength.”
Heber is glad that people find her paintings meaningful, saying, “Hopefully it encourages others to use their talents to help people.”

Last summer, she found a big eagle with wide wings when she explored a nearby forest. Its sharp eyes and strong flight surprised her a lot, and she wanted to know more about this strange bird.
From that day on, she went to the forest after school every day, hiding behind trees to observe the eagle quietly. She found that the eagle flew back to the same treetop every evening. She also discovered the eagle could feel danger from shaking leaves and faraway deer barks. She wrote these things down in her notebook.
At school, Mr. Wu, her biology teacher, noticed Linda’s love for nature. He gave her a magnifying glass (放大镜) and said, “Curiosity is your superpower. Ask questions, test ideas, and record results.” With his encouragement, Linda began to research after school every day. She put some bread near the eagle’s path to see if it would change its habit. Passage 4
(2026·浙江嘉兴·一模)Most of us have secret gardens, somewhere we can relax and refresh. For me, since I can remember, that world has been books.
Like many children, books first drew me in through their pictures. The books and cartoons I read as a child helped me learn to love colours, and understand lines and drawings.
In time, words became more important. I often found happiness in the school library during my middle school years. It had beautiful wooden shelves with glass doors and inside were all kinds of surprising books. There were old encyclopaedias (百科全书), collections of old magazines, and novels that people had almost forgotten. I loved exploring those shelves and discovering new stories.
In the school holidays there was the mobile library. A grey van (货车) would arrive outside our village on Thursday mornings and it was full of plastic-covered books, from love stories to exciting adventures. Again, I was lucky. My parents loved reading. They gave us only a little pocket money, called “Saturday pennies”, but they always made sure we had many new books to read during the summer.
When I was a young boy, I sometimes chose books just to look smart. I wanted people to think I read serious books. But then something changed. I found that although I had read many books, I didn’t really understand many of them. I had finished them quickly and soon forgot about them.
So, bit by bit, I start again. Over the past few years I have begun to reread. Now I’m a patient reader, though. Coming back with older eyes and more life experience, the books that once seemed difficult and boring have become interesting and meaningful. And I know that reading is not about showing off. It is about finding books that truly speak to you.

A.It was full of nice shelves and glasses. B.There was a large collection of books.
C.He could search for information online. D.It was a good place to discover secrets.
2.How did the writer read books when he was young?
A.He read only books with pictures and stories.
B.He read mainly for school exams and homework.
C.He read for pleasure and often finished books quickly.
D.He read slowly and carefully to understand every detail.
3.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.It is better to stop reading if a book seems boring.
B.Reading difficult books is the best way to improve.
C.People should read to show their knowledge to others.
D.As people grow, their understanding of books can change.
4.What’s the best title of the text?
A.My Journey with Books B.Why Reading Is Difficult
C.How to Build a Secret Garden D.The Best Library in My Childhood
Passage 5
(2026·浙江温州·一模)
October 9th, Lower ReachesToday was the first day of the summer camp. Ms. Ella asked my classmates and me to watch a river in the forest. So we went to the lower reaches. It was such a rainy day and my feet were completely wet! Boring! Another school task!
I took some photos because I had to. Who cares about water? I just wanted dry socks.
October 10th, Middle ReachesMs. Ella took us to the side channels (河道) of the middle reaches. We found a puddle (水洼) there. The water was calm — as smooth as glass. Ms. Ella told us that the water gets into the ground and finally flows into the river. Okay…and?
Ms. Ella told us to look more closely. I moved nearer. There were little green balls in the water! I checked my book and found out they are called Volvox algae (团藻). They can make their own food and produce O₂. How amazing! Maybe watching closely isn’t so bad.
October 11th, Upper ReachesToday was our last day at the river. From the mountain top, we watched it turn and bend (弯曲).
“Why do rivers bend?” I asked. Ms. Ella smiled, “Let’s make a model on the sand, so we can learn the rivers’ changes along the way.” We dug a path and poured water from our bottles. Then we learnt that rivers bend because water moves faster on the outside and slower on the inside.
In every long river, the start, the middle and the end can feel like completely different worlds. Just like a famous writer said, “Nature is the best teacher.”
1.What did Ms. Ella ask the writer to do?
A.To watch a river. B.To wash socks.
C.To go swimming. D.To enjoy sunny days.
2.How did the writer feel when he found the green balls?
A.Bored. B.Amazed. C.Proud. D.Worried.
3.Why did Ms. Ella and her students make a model?
A.To dig for more water. B.To collect sand from the river.
C.To make water run slowly. D.To understand rivers’ changes.
4.What did the writer learn from the summer camp?
A.Rivers are important to the forest.
B.It’s a good way to learn with classmates.
C.It’s meaningful to explore nature.
D.Watching is better than making a model.

Passage 1
(2026·浙江金华·模拟预测)Noah had never paid attention to the stray cats in his neighborhood. He often walked past them without a second look, focusing only on his own life — schoolwork, video games, and hanging out with friends. He thought caring for small animals was something kind people did, not something he needed to bother with.
One rainy evening, he found a tiny cat trembling under his window. It was weak and could not even stand up. Noah hesitated for a moment, then took it inside quietly. He dried it with a towel, fed it warm milk, and made a soft bed for it. That night, he stayed up late worrying about the cat.
As days passed, the cat got better and closer to Noah. It followed him around the house and curled up on his desk when he studied. For the first time, Noah felt a strong sense of responsibility. He started learning about how to look after stray animals, preparing food and clean water for them every day. He even put up posters to help other stray cats find homes.
His parents were surprised to see his change. “You used to be a boy who only cared about himself,” his mom said. “Now you’re kind and responsible.” Noah smiled. He realized that kindness was not a difficult thing. It started with small actions, and it could warm both others’ hearts and his own.

Nobody knew that her elder brother had been teaching her to practise shooting the ball into the basket every evening after school. In fact, she could do it more easily now, but no one ever gave her the chance to show what she could do.
When the game began, the other team played actively. They guarded (防守) everyone on Amber’s team except Nina. It seemed that everyone thought Nina played worst in her team.
Nina moved to an open area and raised her hands. Amber looked around for someone else to pass the ball to, but all her teammates were guarded. Just as Nina started to lower her hands, the ball came to her way from Amber!
Surprised, Nina caught the ball. “Shoot!” Amber shouted. Nina took a moment to adjust her feet and threw the ball. And everyone watched it directly going through the net!
“Great shot!” Amber said, running over to high-five her. The other teammates cheered too.
Nina stood there excitedly, smiling for the first time that day.
After the match, Amber said, “You should join our weekend team! We play in the park on Saturdays.”

Passage 3
(2026·浙江湖州·一模)Linda, a 13-year-old girl, is very curious (好奇) about nature. Instead of playing computer games at home or going shopping, she loves watching ants walking in lines or listening to birds singing outside.
The bird only moved its landing place a little and still came back. She thought it was amazing. Finally her project on eagles won the first prize at the science fair.
She later joined an environmental club, planting flowers for butterflies and building some mini hotels for birds.

A.Rivers are important to the forest.

(2026·浙江绍兴·一模)①Zhengyiguan is a beautiful green land on the Helan Mountain. But many years ago, it was a dry and desolate (荒凉的) land. Thanks to the hard work of one man, this place has completely changed.

They had to walk kilometers carrying young trees on their backs. Sometimes, sparks even flew from their tools.
③However, Ding and his wife never gave up. They brought young trees from Jiangsu by train and water from faraway springs (泉水). They worked day and night. Finally, their hard work paid off. Today, more than 40,000 trees cover about 266,700 square meters of the mountain.
④Their children later joined them. Ding Feng, their son, worked with them until he passed away in 2021. Ding Yi, their daughter, also left her job in 2017 to care for her parents and the forest. Thanks to their great efforts, Zhengyiguan has become a beautiful green land. A small river now flows through the area, which helps stop wind and sand.
