Last month, my cousin Leo moved in with my family. It was his first time living away from home, and he was excited to learn to manage things by himself.
One sunny afternoon, we decided to walk to the park. On the way, we saw a cute dog tied to a fence. Leo, who loves animals, immediately went to pet it. Suddenly, the dog became nervous. It barked loudly and bit Leo on the arm before he could move away!
“It’s bleeding! What do we do?” Leo cried out in pain, his face pale. Seeing his fear snapped me out of my panic. I took a deep breath, and the first aid and safety lessons from school came back to me. “Stay calm! I know what to do,” I said, trying to sound confident.
We found a nearby public restroom. I held Leo’s arm under the running tap and washed the wound with soap for five minutes. Next, I used a clean cloth from my bag, pressing it firmly against the wound until the bleeding slowed. Then, I covered it with a bandage.
At the hospital, the doctor gave Leo a tetanus shot (破伤风疫苗) and a rabies vaccination (狂犬病疫苗). He praised us, saying, “You did the right thing by cleaning the wound thoroughly.”
This accident was a sharp lesson. Independence is exciting, but safety is more important. We must always think before we act. Knowing first aid is powerful—it turns panic into purpose. Now, we both understand that safety must always come first.

C.In an accident report. D.On a first-aid instruction leaflet.
“Can I have a glass of hot water?” This is a very common question in a restaurant. For many Chinese people, nothing is more common than drinking hot water every day. But this habit is like a mystery to people from other countries.
For many Westerners, the idea of drinking hot water is very strange. But most Chinese people think the Americans’ habit of drinking icy water is also strange and even unhealthy. Chinese doctors are asking more people to take on the habit of drinking hot water, especially for women.
But in Western countries, drinking hot water isn’t common. Westerners often have drinks with ice, not just on hot days but almost every day.
There is a story about an Englishman, who worked in Beijing for over five years. He visited a café when going back to England. He asked for a glass of hot water in a British accent (口音). But this requirement (要求) made the waitress surprised, “To…to…drink?” she asked. At last, the man got the hot water but felt cold stares (凝视) from every corner of the café. Westerners want to know why Chinese drink hot water as Chinese want to know why Westerners drink cold water. This cultural difference is not an easy problem, but related to (与……有关联) history, culture and science.
Many young people now drink bottled water every day. With the young people growing up, will drinking hot water become a less popular life habit? Who knows?

C.How to Drink Water D.Drinking Hot Water in China
Man Lichu couldn’t believe his eyes when he walked into Zhang’s Garden. This place was once his home. Now it looks “completely different”, he said.
Many others once called Zhang’s Garden home, too. It was once a residential area (居民区). After years of redevelopment, it now stands as a commercial and cultural landmark. Visitors arrive in large numbers. Many are surprised to see the 143-year-old historical doors and windows.
Zhang’s Garden is widely praised as the “Best Garden in Shanghai”. There are many shikumen (石库门) houses. Some buildings mix the best of Chinese and Western designs. Take the W12 building for example. Its baroque style (巴洛克风格) catches the eye, and its beautifully carved wooden decorations stand out as well.
Zhang’s Garden witnessed Shanghai’s development. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, great minds like Sun Yat-sen (孙中山) often gave speeches there. It was also the birthplace of bikes and electric lamps in Shanghai.
Things changed around the middle of last century. Many factories were built nearby after the 1950s. Over time, Zhang’s Garden became more and more crowded. Mr. Man used to live in an 18-square-metre apartment with six family members.
In late 2018, Shanghai started to redevelop Zhang’s Garden. Chu Feng was one of the project managers. “There are a total of 42 buildings with 2,053 rooms,” he said. “It’s not easy to fix them up while keeping their historical charm.”
Chu’s team went to great lengths to gather historical information about the buildings. It took them three years to collect old photos and architectural plans. Their document on the W12 building was more than 400 pages long. Another challenge was to add modern equipment like security cameras. This had to be done without damaging the buildings’ quaint appearance
After a lot of hard work, the western part of Zhang’s Garden opened to the public at the end of 2022. Work on the larger eastern part is still going on. The project is expected to be completed by 2027. The “Best Garden in Shanghai” will then be ready to amaze even more visitors.

A.owner B.reporter C.project manager D.visitor
38.According to the passage, visitors to Zhang’s Garden today can find ________.
① many shikumen houses ② several colourful gardens

39.Zhang’s Garden became more and more crowded in the second half of the last century because ________.

On the east coast of China, there are some wetlands by the Yellow Sea. Dafeng Milu National Nature Reserve lies there. If you take a tour of the reserve, you 46 (notice) groups of strange-looking deer walking around. These are milu, also named sibuxiang in Chinese, because of their special appearance-a horse-like face, cow-like hooves, deer-like antlers, and a donkey-like tail.
Centuries ago, milu 47 (simple) lived in China. Both The Book of Mencius (《孟子》) and the Book of Rites (《礼记》) mentioned milu. And the Chinese character “mi” first appeared in oracle bone scripts (甲骨文). In 1865, a 48 (France) missionary (传教士) Pere David discovered such deer in Beijing and then introduced some to Europe. People there were very 49 (amaze) to see this rare species and called it “Pere David’s deer”.
Archaeologists (考古学家) have found that milu once disappeared in China for 100 years. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, the number of milu dropped rapidly because of 50 (nature) disasters and too much hunting. By 1900, it became extinct (灭绝的) in China. Fortunately, the Duke of Bedford from Britain gave shelter to 18 milu in his country, and they were looked after well by him in the park. Later, their number increased year by year. Today this park has the 51 (large) number of milu in Europe.
In the 52 (eighty) of the last century, in order to take 20 milu back to Beijing Nanhaizi Milu Park from Britain, the Chinese government put forward a 53 (suggest) to Britain. This was a 54 (success) start in China’s milu protection and was supported by the descendants (后代) of the Duke of Bedford. In 1986, another 39 milu were taken back and sent 55 (live) in Dafeng Milu Nature Reserve.
Today, there’re over 5,000 milu living in China, with nearly 1,350 living in the wild. The return of milu is a witness of animal protection between two countries—China and Britain.
Ten years ago, my hometown was just a small quiet town. The streets were n 56 , with only a few small shops on both sides. People lived a simple life, and the only fun was to chat with neighbors or watch TV at home.
Today, my hometown has t 57 into a busy modern town. The old narrow roads have become wide streets with green trees and beautiful flowers. Last year, a new shopping mall o 58 in the center of the town. People can buy everything they need there, and it only takes 10 minutes to walk there from my home. It u 59 to take us half an hour to get to the nearest big supermarket in the city. How fast our town changes!
O 60 , there was a large waste land behind our neighborhood. But now it has become a beautiful park with a lake and a sports center. Every morning, many old people do exercise there. On weekends, children have great fun playing different kinds of sports, i 61 basketball, football and so on.
Even my grandma has changed a lot. She u 62 to know nothing about the Internet, but now she can use a smartphone to video-call my aunt in Beijing and even buy things online. The new library near the park is my favorite place. You can borrow books just by s 63 your ID card, no need for librarians.
Some things never change, though. The old tree in the center of the town s 64 stands tall, as a symbol of our hometown. The old tea-house still sells traditional tea, mixing the old traditions with our m 65 lives.
I love the changes of my hometown, and I’m happy to see it growing better and better.
I recently read The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. It is one of my favourite books. This novel tells the story of an old fisherman named Santiago. He hasn’t caught any fish for 84 days. But he doesn’t give up. On the 85th day, he goes far out into the sea and catches a huge marlin. The fish is so big that it pulls his boat for two days. Santiago fights with the fish, and finally kills it. However, on his way home, sharks come and eat the fish. When he returns, only the fish’s skeleton is left.
The old man is my favourite character. He is strong, brave, and never gives up. Even though he loses the fish, he wins the battle against nature. This story teaches me an important lesson: a man can be destroyed but not defeated.
I learned a lot from this book. It shows us the importance of perseverance and courage. I think everyone should read this book. It will make you think about life and what it means to be strong.

1.—Where is your sister?
—I don’t know. She only left a ________ on the table.
A.promise B.book C.message D.news
根据“I don’t know.”
2.—________ have you stayed in this hotel?
—Not long, just ________ this Wednesday.
A.How soon; since B.How long; since C.How soon; from D.How long; from
how soon用来询问多久之后,常用于将来时;how long用来询问多长时间;since自从;from从。
3.— Mom, I want to watch Super Sketch Show tonight.
— Oh, dear, it ________ for a few minutes. Come on!
A.has begun B.will begin C.has been on D.will be on
根据“for a few minutes”可知,时态为现在完成时,且与一段时间连用时应用延续性动词,结构为have/has+done,it为主语,助动词用has。故选C。
4.—Hello, Jenny. Where is Tom? I can’t find him ________.
—Oh, he has gone to the library.
A.everywhere B.anywhere C.somewhere D.nowhere
根据“I can’t find him...”
5.—Tom is modest and open to advice.
—But his brother likes to ________ his own abilities.
A.put off B.take off C.show off D.turn off
put off推迟;take off起飞;show off炫耀;turn off关掉。
6.—When did Mary ________ Tom?
—They have ________ for nearly 10 years.
A.married; been married B.get married; got married
C.marry; been married D.get married with; got married
marry sb. 第一空,结合“When did Mary ... Tom”和选项可知,此处表示Mary和Tom结婚,助动词did后用动词原形,要用marry;第二空,根据“for nearly 10 years”可知,这是一段时间,时态要用现在完成时,需用延续性动词be married,其现在完成时结构为have been married。故选C。
7.—Where is your brother?
—He with his friends _______ Shanghai. They will be back in a week.
A.have gone to B.have been to C.has been to D.has gone to
have gone to去某地了(还未回);have been to曾经去过某地(已回)。根据“They will be back in a week”可知,他们去了上海,还未回,故用have gone to;主语He with his friends,由he决定主语是三单,故助动词用has。故选D。
8.—I’m not sure ________ to ask for help when I’m in trouble.
—Why not me? I’ll always be by your side.
A.what B.where C.whom D.how
what(什么)用于指代事物;where(哪里)用于指代地点;whom(谁,宾格)用于指代人,可作动词的宾语;how(如何)用于询问方式。根据答语“Why not me?”
9.—Simon, I am afraid that we can’t complete the model spaceship this afternoon.
—Well, we ________ finish it today. It is fine if we give it to Mr. Wang tomorrow.
A.can’t B.mustn’t C.don’t have to D.shouldn’t
can’t不能;mustn’t禁止;don’t have to不必;shouldn’t不应该。根据答语后句“It is fine if we give it to Mr. Wang tomorrow.”
10.—So you gave her your mobile phone?
—________. She said she’d return it to me after she had hers fixed.
A.Not exactly B.My pleasure C.With pleasure D.No problem
【答案】A
Not exactly不完全是这样;My pleasure我的荣幸;With pleasure十分乐意;No problem没问题。根据“She said she’d return it to me after she had hers fixed”可知,说话者并没有完全把手机给对方,A选项符合语境。故选A。

29.Which of the following is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A.The name of the dog’s owner. B.Where the dog bite happened.
C.What the doctor gave Leo at the hospital. D.How long the writer washed the wound for.

But this requirement (要求) made the waitress surprised, “To…to…drink?” she asked. At last, the man got the hot water but felt cold stares (凝视) from every corner of the café. Westerners want to know why Chinese drink hot water as Chinese want to know why Westerners drink cold water.
37.In the first paragraph, Man Lichu entered Zhang’s Garden as a/an ________.
A.owner B.reporter C.project manager D.visitor
38.According to the passage, visitors to Zhang’s Garden today can find ________.
① many shikumen houses ② several colourful gardens
③ beautiful wooden decorations ④ windows more than 140 years old
